Onmogelijke opgave wat mij betreft. Idem voor album top 10. Mijn voorkeur is voortdurend in beweging, beïnvloed door vele factoren. Mijn ratings, vanaf 4 sterren omhoog, geven een aardige indicatie. That's all.

Ik vergeet wel eens dat dit forum MusicMeter heet omdat ik zelf aan lijstjes geen enkel belang hecht.
In mijn top-10 heb ik "gewoon" een aantal naar mijn smaak érg goede album geplaatst, maar of dat dan ook mijn 10 "beste" albums zouden zijn, tja... Voorkeuren zijn bij mij stemmingsgebonden, en bepaalde artiesten beluister ik soms jaren niet. De ratings zijn inderdaad een redelijke indicatie, maar al te veel belang moet je daar nu ook weer niet aan hechten. Ben soms zeer verbaasd over het lijstjesfetisjisme op dit forum. No offence intended.

Het is inderdaad een wonderlijk fenomeen, die lijsten. Geen idee waar het vandaan komt en waarom er op de site (en ook in de muziekpers wereldwijd) zo veel belang aan wordt gehecht. In de jaren 60 kon je bij ons in het dorp de gestencilde top 40 afhalen bij de locale platenboer annex elektraverkoper. Die zorgde er dan voor dat de meeste singles van die lijst bij hem te koop waren. Handige marketingtruc voor die tijd waar ik de logica wel van inzag. Maar dat principe is hier op MuMe niet van toepassing. Er moet dus een andere, dieper liggende verklaring zijn voor dit fenomeen. Iemand een idee? Of moeten we bij de sitepsycholoog te rade gaan voor meer inzicht. Ik heb er overigens totaal geen moeite mee en gun ieder zijn lol bij het uitvogelen van de rangorde. Maar het blijft voor mij verbazingwekkend.

Bij mij een zelfde soort verbazing. Het ene album raakt je uiteraard meer dan het andere, maar om je daar nou heel erg druk om te maken en een top-100 op te stellen, daar kan ik me niet goed in verplaatsen. Bij mij gaat het erom dat muziek (een bepaalde artiest, componist) mij voluit raakt, en dan koppel ik daar voor het gemak een hoge waardering aan, maar verder vergelijken is vaak zinloos. Bijvoorbeeld een album van Sinatra, dat dus "beter" zou zijn dan een album van The Kinks, en daarom hoger geplaatst wordt in je Top-100. Van elkaar verschillende disciplines, en daarom onvergelijkbare albums. De verklaring van die lijstjes is uiteraard grotendeels van psychologische aard.

Jaarlijstjes zijn nog wel leuk voor het overzicht en de soms vurige discussies. Ook in retrospect maak ik die maar hecht er verder weinig gevoelswaarde aan.

Ik houd constant een persoonlijke top 100 bij. Ook heb ik ieder jaar een top 10-20 (afhankelijk van hoe goed het jaar was) en een top meest geluisterde albums. Deze lijstjes heb ik ook voor de ongeveer vijftien jaar voorafgaand aan het moment dat ik zelf muziek begon te luisteren. In mijn Spotify houd ik playlists bij met allerhande best of-lijstjes, en volgens mij is dat nog niet eens alles. Ik durf mezelf best een lijstjesfanaat te noemen. Het is een kleine obsessie.

Waarom? Het geeft structuur aan de manier waarop ik muziek luister en ervaar, en is bovendien een praktische manier van navigeren door mijn eigen collectie (die voor 99% digitaal is). Het is strikt persoonlijk, en om het samen te vatten zou ik zeggen dat ik simpelweg plezier beleef aan het organiseren (naast het luisteren natuurlijk). Hopelijk verschaft dit wat inzicht!

Heel voorlopig, zal ongetwijfeld nog enorm veranderen.

Waarom Magdalene zakt, is dat omdat ik het gevoel heb dat de andere nummers het toch niet helemaal doen, waardoor ik niet het idee heb dat de tweede plaats nog van toepassing is. Hoewel fallen alien en thousand eyes allebei nummers zijn die ik in een top 10 zou zetten op dit moment. En cellophane en sad day ook fantastisch zijn.

Hier en daar ook wel wat recency bias, ook nu zal dat wel het geval zijn. Hoort er gewoon éénmaal bij. Als een album frisser in je kopje zit, is het makkelijker om dat te beoordelen. En als een album niet zo fris in je kop zit, is er misschien wel een reden voor. Luister ik het dan eens opnieuw, dan blijkt vaak achteraf dat daar geen goede reden voor was om het weer aan de kant te leggen.

Komende weken leg ik de focus wat meer into the 80's (en early 90's). Iets te veel in een shoegaze / tweelingen bui en plots weer zin gekregen in The Cure. En ook iets als Sonic Youth wil ik graag wat meer van horen.

Trouwens maar vier albums van de jaren '70 halen het voorlopig. Dat lijkt toch echt mijn grote "black spot" te zijn, gezien de jaren '80 veel meer vertegenwoordigd zijn met 12 entries, en ook de jaren '60 doen beter met vijf entries. De jaren '90 hebben 16 entries. De jaren '00 laten met 8 entries het wat afweten. De rest is voor de 2010's en later.

Voorlopig top 50. Ik moet ook veel te veel herbeluisteren, dus dat zal wel nog grondig veranderen. Ik zal wel makkelijk aan een top 100 komen volgend jaar voor mocht er een nieuwe MuMe top 1000 zijn. Dat was eigenlijk een klein jaar geleden nog een grote vrees van mij. Het ordenen (en vele herbeluisteren) enzovoort zal een stuk moeilijker zijn, doch. Het zit hoe lager in de lijst heel dicht op elkaar, en dus onderhevig aan hevige schommelingen. Daarom hou ik het ook op een top 50 voorlopig. Top 100 zend ik volgend jaar wel in.

Voor de MuMe top 1000 - als er één komt natuurlijk - zal ik wel een eigen regel invoeren dat ik geen nieuw beluisterde albums instuur die ik minder dan een maand voor de deadline voor het eerst beluisterd heb, om de recency bias wat tegen te gaan, omdat ik wel last heb van de recency bias merk ik. En sowieso heb ik dan ook wat de tijd om te herbeluisteren enzovoort. Dan wil ik wel een zo goed en representatief mogelijke top 100 insturen.
