Waarbij het leuke was dat de singleversie eigenlijk de ultieme versie van dit nummer was, wat mij betreft. Hierop waren part 1 en part 2 van het album op een heel natuurlijke manier aan elkaar geplakt, zodat het een mooi uitgewerkt nummer werd van een minuut of 5, inclusief de lange instrumentale finale.
Ik heb de originele single nog, maar die versie heb ik nog nooit op CD teruggevonden. Al is hij met wat knip- en plakwerk misschien best eigenhandig te editen.

Anyway, wat een leuke lijst is dit, vol met bijna vergeten nummers. Ik moet er echt een hoop leuke nummers voor laten vallen om en top 10 samen te stellen, maar dit is 'm:

Allemaal nummers die de hitparade dus nooit hebben gehaald in Nederland. Vreemd eigenlijk, want er zitten aardig wat bescheiden klassiertjes bij.

Trouwens, het kan aan mijn geheugen liggen, maar was Peter Gunn van ELP (de live uitvoering) niet gewoon een knoeperd van een hit in Nederland? Of ben ik nou abuis?

Je hebt absoluut gelijk, al was het wel een sleephit, in januari 1980 kwam hij in de tipparade, om uiteindelijk in juli van dat jaar een gigantische hit te worden. Ik vind dit trouwens de beste versie van "Peter Gunn" die er ooit geweest is.

Leuk bericht! Je hebt helemaal gelijk. Ik heb de single vinyl versie van The Turn of a Friendly Card ook nog ooit ergens op de kop kunnen tikken. Ik begrijp ook niet helemaal waarom deze niet op de nieuwere versie met bonus tracks is uitgebracht.

Wat betreft Peter Gunn. Dat was mijn tweede single. Vooral de live aankondiging en dan knallen, maakte indruk op mij. En inderdaad: dit was een hit in Nederland.

Wellicht gaat het om een in Nederland gemaakte singlemix.
Dat gebeurde wel vaker in de vroege jaren 80, dat men in de
Benelux een eigen (meestal) edit van een nummer uitbracht.
Dat kan verklaren waarom hij nooit op CD is verschenen, en
het hier dus wellicht om een echt collector's item gaat. Mooi.

Ik denk dat dat het is. Ik weet het niet helemaal zeker, maar ik geloof dat dat nummer destijds alleen in Nederland op single is uitgebracht. In ieder geval niet in Engeland en Amerika, want daar waren Time en Games people play de singles van dit album.

En dan te bedenken dat er zelfs een APP-verzamelaar op de markt is verschenen die "The Dutch Collection" heet. Mooi, dacht ik toen ik die voor het eerst in de winkel zag, dáár zal die versie dan wel op staan. Mooi niet dus. Tja, helaas werken er bij de platenmaatschappijen net iets te weinig mensen met historisch besef. Al vind ik dat we met veel heruitgaven van de laatste jaren eigenlijk niet mogen klagen, maar dat is een discussie over een ander onderwerp.

Eervolle vermelding: Fisher Z - Roomservice/Limbo

Ik wil hier toch nog aan toe voegen dat dit jaar vele malen beter is kwa tips dan de 2 voorgaande jaren (en misschien van alle daarvoor). De post-punk/new wave/gitaarbandjes-golf heeft een oase aan klassiekertjes opgeleverd die vaak te alternatief waren voor het grote publiek, en dit begon zich wel zo'n beetje in dit jaar te manifesteren, lijkt het.
