Welkom allen bij het jaar 1986, Het jaar van Tsjernobyl. Een ontploffing in een Russische kerncentrale zaait paniek in Europa. Er worden verhoogde concentraties radioactiviteit gemeten tot ver buiten Rusland. Terwijl de autoriteiten in Moskou terughoudend zijn met informatie over de ernst van de ramp, worden in Nederland de koeien op stal gehouden en daalt de consumptie van verse groente. Maar dat is lang niet alles dat jaar: Een schok gaat door Amerika als de Space Shuttle Challenger ontploft. En in Suriname bindt het junglecommando van Ronnie Brunswijk de strijd aan met het bewind van Desi Bouterse. Hier in Nederland opent Koningin Beatrix de Oosterscheldedam, waarmee de Deltawerken zijn voltooid. En Evert van Benthem doet het weer: hij wint de Elfstedentocht, waar ook, anoniem, kroonprins Willem-Alexander in meerijdt.
