Voor het samenstellen van de ladders wordt steeds geloot, waarbij rekening wordt gehouden met de relatieve sterkte van de deelnemende tracks. Hiertoe worden een aantal 'potten' gemaakt, even veel als het aantal tracks per ladder, vrijwel altijd acht. De sterkste tracks gaan in pot 1, de zwakste in pot 8, et cetera. Vervolgens wordt voor elke ladder één track uit elke pot genomen.

De sterkte wordt bepaald aan de hand van de totaalscore behaald in de voorgaande ronde (zie: Placering). Voor de eerste ronde is dit het rangnummer behaald in de vorige jaargang, waarbij de nieuwe nominaties in pot 7 en 8 worden geplaatst, met alle tracks van één nominerende in dezelfde pot, zodat ze niet direct tegen elkaar hoeven uit te komen.

Bij volgende rondes wordt tevens rekening gehouden met de ladder van de voorgaande ronde: ladders vormen ook 'potten', die als het ware gekruist worden met de sterkte-potten, zodat tracks zo min mogelijk direct weer tegen dezelfde tracks hoeven uit te komen.

In afwijking hiervan wordt bij de loting voor de Generale Voorronde geen rekening gehouden met de voorgaande ladder, maar met de ouderdom van de track. Alle tracks worden, naast sterkte, ook verdeeld over acht potten gesorteerd op het jaartal van de track. Je kunt je de loting voorstellen als een sudoku, waarbij voor elke ladder één track uit elke rij en uit elke kolom wordt geselecteerd. Zo bevatten alle ladders acht tracks met maximale variatie in sterkte én ouderdom.

De 'bloedgroep' of 'kleur' speelt bij lotingen geen rol, zodat sommige ladders wel als sterk of zwak ervaren kunnen worden door de leden van een kamp, waarbij de leden van het andere kamp hem dan precies andersom zullen ervaren.

De FIFA kan een hoop van je leren , maar welk systeem je ook hanteert bij lotingen komen onwaarschijnlijke resultaten vaker voor dan men gevoelsmatig voor mogelijk houdt. In ladder 13 moet Yuba met zijn Tuba het alweer opnemen tegen een nummer van de Comedian Harmonists. En de rest van de ladder is ook ijzersterk. Bij voetbal spreek je dan van een poel des doods.
