Als deze battle klaar is is de finale natuurlijk al bekend, maar ik wil die morgenavond graag zelf opstarten. Ik wil niet het risico lopen dat de finale al beslist is voor ik kan stemmen.

In plaats van te huilen kun je ook duimen voor een goede afloop. Dat heeft meer zin denk ik.

Pijnlijk om hier de beslissende stem te nemen, de nipste battle van heel deze KO voor mij denk ik...
En na toch nog eens opnieuw te luisteren, ook al ken ik ze beter dan mijn broekzak, tot een moeilijke beslissing gekomen...

Wat is het beste nummer van Deftones? Na zes weken battelen en 94 keiharde keuzes hebben we bijna een antwoord op die vraag. Er zijn nog twee kanshebbers over: Digital Bath en Change (In the House of Flies). Het zijn beide singles en beide zijn ze afkomstig van White Pony, het album dat alom als magnum opus van de band wordt beschouwd. Het was het album waarop Deftones hun sound verder ontwikkelde en de nu-metal uit hun begindagen langzaam achter zich liet.

Digital Bath en Change zijn beide typerend voor die nieuwe sound, waarin er meer ruimte komt voor sfeervolle en dromerige passages en de zangpartijen gevarieerder worden, maar waarin de heren hun wilde haren zeker nog niet van zich afgeschud hebben.

Digital Bath begint met een rustig drumintro, Change gaat van start met een kalm intro op gitaar. Wat is mooier? Change bouwt op naar een knallend en meeslepend refrein, Digital Bath werkt toe naar een net zo knallend refrein met intense uithalen. Wat is mooier? Beide nummers vertonen best wat gelijkenissen, maar het zijn juist de kleine verschillen die beslissend gaan zijn.

Wie gaat er winnen? De keuze is aan jullie.

Hoewel ik zelf niet meer gestemd heb, vind ik het een mooie winnaar. Het blijft uiteraard moeilijk kiezen uit een zo goed als vlekkeloze discografie. Deftones is terecht de enige band uit de veelvuldig bespotte "nu metal scene" die doorheen de jaren geaccepteerd is gebleven.

Ook ik had Pink Maggit wat verder in het spel willen zien. Ik ben toch meer dan tevreden met Digital Bath als winnaar van deze K.O.

Ik deel met jullie nog graag de beste Deftones-cover die ik heb gehoord. De Duitse metal/hardcoreband War from a Harlots Mouth coverde Hexagram. Ze hebben de sfeerzetting en de groove van het origineel in de vingers, maar laten ook duidelijk de eigen sound doorschemeren, het is vooral een stuk logger en modderiger.

Stel je daar maar niet teveel van voor. Hier komt-ie:

Digital Bath wint de Deftones-K.O.! Volkomen terecht als je het mij vraagt, want een ijzersterk nummer als Change met 6-0 opzij zetten is echt een topprestatie.

Iedereen bedankt voor het meespelen en voor het opleuken van deze K.O. van eenvoudig spelletje tot een veredeld Deftones-discussietopic. Ik waardeer het altijd erg als er berichten worden geplaatst met meer inhoud dan '1-0' of '3-1'.
