Mocht er aandacht zijn voor soul op deze website, dan is het vaak voor de oudere soul uit de jaren '60 en '70. Vaak wordt er daarmee vergeten dat er ook heel veel goede nieuwere soul uitkomt. De term nu-soul is in de jaren '90 niet voor niks ontstaan door artiesten als Maxwell, Erykah Badu en D'Angelo.

Daarom een nieuw spelletje met als doel jullie meer kennis te laten maken met wat de nieuwere soul allemaal als kwaliteit te bieden heeft. We beginnen met 320 old soul songs en 320 new soul songs die tegen elkaar gaan strijden in een KO, om met de laatste 32 een top32 te maken.

De old soul songs heb ik uit de That's Soul Ladder gehaald en jullie hoeven zich daar dus niet meer over te buigen. Dat is met de new soul songs wel anders. Ik heb vast een voorschot gegeven voor de eerste 120 en heb er dus nog 200 nodig. Aan jullie de taak deze te nomineren door je eigen lijstje van maximaal 5 songs in te leveren. Ik wil jullie daarin vragen linkjes toe te voegen aan de songs en goed op te letten dat het een diverse lijst met artiesten blijft.

Tijdens KO's is er trouwens een extra regel:
- Alleen stemmen is niet genoeg, ik lees bij je stem ook graag wat je nu van die new soul song in de KO vindt.

Vooralsnog weinig animo hier. Ik kijk het nog even aan of ik het door laat gaan, want met dit aantal deelnemers komen we de eerste ronde niet eens door.

Iets minder groots opzetten wellicht. 120 of 180 old soul en evenzoveel new soul. 320 van beide is wel een flink aantal.

Dat is inderdaad een optie.
Als we gaan stemmen dan moeten we toch minimaal 9 deelnemers hebben en ik heb niet het gevoel dat die er nu zijn. Daar doelde ik meer op.

Ik denk als je eenmaal start dat er wel wat aanhaken. Je hebt van die usual suspects die alles kennen en overal een mening over hebben die zullen hier ook wel weer opduiken .

Bedankt voor de tag Reijersen (al weer een poosje geleden). Initiatieven in de soul topics vind ik altijd mooi, maar ik ben momenteel door andere bezigheden niet veel meer op deze site meer te vinden. Dit topic zou ik vast wel lezen, maar trouw meedoen zit er even niet in helaas.

1-0 Ook in deze eerste battle is de old-soul simpelweg te goed. At the Dark End is één van mijn twintig favoriete soulsongs allertijden.

Wel een aardig nummer van Frank McComb, een artiest waar ik eigenlijk (te) weinig van ken. Het duurt me alleen een beetje te lang.

Uiteraard kansloos tegen één van de beste nummers uit deze KO.

3-0 een mooi opgebouwd nummer van McComb die piano en stem mooi combineert. Wint het echter niet van James Carr

Queen of Soul lijkt mij dudelijk en ben nooit zo'n Badu fan geweest

Tijdens KO's is er trouwens een extra regel:
- Alleen stemmen is niet genoeg, ik lees bij je stem ook graag wat je nu van die new soul song in de KO vindt

Ik vind het leuk om toelichting te geven bij liedjes en doe dit sowieso al vaak maar ik zou het niet gaan verplichten. Soms heb je simpelweg weinig commentaar en is het ene nummer gewoon echt beter (zoals in battle 1).

Ik hou niet van ieder Badu nummer maar deze is prima. Eigenlijk vind ik Aretha nog iets beter maar als het dicht bij elkaar ligt ga ik op de nu-soul stemmen anders hebben we na ronde één geen nu-soul meer over.

Juist wel, want het doel is de nusoul meer te laten ontdekken. Anders wordt het zo'n eenrichtingsverkeer richting de old soul.

2-2, nummers ontlopen elkaar maar weinig. Super relaxte song van Badu krijgt mijn stem.

Prima nummer van Badu, maar haalt het (net) niet bij Aretha.

Geef mij maar de Aretha uit de jaren 80. En Badu is gewoon de Queen of nu soul.

1-0 redelijk nummer van Jill Scott, op momenten iets te schreeuwerig. Wel lekker kort en puntig. Maar, tegenover een klassieker als Is It Because I'm Black is het niet genoeg.

2-0 dit nummer van Jill Scott is één van mijn favorieten tijdens het hardlopen. Lekker energiek gezongen en geproduceerd om goed het tempo erin te houden. Ik hoor Jill graag een beetje bozig en funky als dit. Maar redt het inderdaad niet bij Syl Johnson.

0-1, dat refrein van dit Maxwell nummer blijft zo hangen. Je zingt het a la seconde mee. Mooie sfeer ook en hij benut zijn vocale capaciteiten goed.

Ik denk dat ik hier de stekker maar uit trek.

Leuk spelletje hoor alleen de regel dat je iets erbij moet zetten vind ik zelf persoonlijk niks sorry.

Ik begrijp dat het even anders is dan normaal. De bedoeling van dit spel is juist ook meer die nieuwere soul te laten ontdekken. Dat zal niet alleen via deze nummers gaan, maar ook door verdere tips. Daar hebben we dat stukje informatie voor nodig om op verder voort te borduren.
