Mijn punt is: "You" is ook mierzoet. Dus als je "You" goed vind, dan kan je dit album niet afkeuren op zijn "mierzoetheid".
Ik heb al eens eerder een recensie over dit album geschreven, in 2000.
Ten Sharp is one of the names I remember from the time I first started listening to pop music. Their Japanese Lovesong was a minor hit in the Netherlands in 1985. Most people however, remember Ten Sharp for their big 1991 hit "You" which sold almost a million copies worldwide. I personally never liked that song very much, although its almost old fashioned melodic quality did catch my attention at the time.
The Fire Inside, released in '93, impressed me with some lovely melodies, clear production, sparkling arrangements and skilfull (if melodramatic) singing. As a singer, Marcel Kapteijn undeniably bears resemblance to Tony Hadley of Spandau Ballet (what ever happened to Tony?!). But anyway, Kapteijn's voice is a perfect fit for the overtly romantic material on this album, written by co-member Niels Hermes en lyricist Ton Groen. Highlights include Where love lives (typical over-the-top 'sensitive' singing that strangely enough only enhances the song), the infectious Dreamhome (Dream on), As I remember (distinctive 'european' feel), slow ballad Say it ain't so.
I never thought I would like this album as much as I do. It only goes to show that within each genre of pop there's bad stuff but also good stuff. 22-07-2000
