Dames en heren, ik presenteer u : De tekst uit de inlay van het boekje : The making of Welcome 2 Detroit
The making of "Welcome 2 Detroit" in so many words-
Originally I went into this project 2 produce a Breakbeat
LP- what happened? BBE basically told me 2 do whatever I
wanted to do ¡ UH OH! GET READY!
"Welcome 2 Detroit"
- The intro "Welcome 2 Detroit" was tracked the night B-4
the album turn in date. After listening 2 the LP a 1000 x, I :
felt the intro should be rough and dirty ¡ similar 2
Detroit. With the help of an obscure loop played in 5/4,
Moet, a handheld Mic and a few blunts. There u have it, oh
yeah, I probably would not have rhymed on it but Dank
thought it would be ill if I did ¡ done deal.
"Y' all Ain't Ready" ¡
- Recorded late 99- an unfinished song, I decided at the
last minute to use it for this comp. Done wit my trusty
SP-1200 and an old school keyboard. There u have it.
"Think Twice"
- Retouching Donald Byrd's classic ¡ Me and my mans, Dwelle
arranged this piece. I wanted 2 create something that sounds :
like a 7 inch record, also something that feels like the
70's ¡ you smell me? Check it out I think we did a pretty
good job.
Dwelle : Keyboards, Trumpet
Dwelle's Brother : Trombone
James Yancey : All other instruments
"The Clapper" featuring Blu
- My mans Karriem Riggins hit me with this one. It reminds
me of some ol' Tony Allen shit. The snare hits remind me of
the "The Clapper" commercial (clap on, clap off). Due to the :
subject matter, I wanted someone who could relate, 2 rhyme
with me. With the help from Blu ( a street nig ¡ a 4 real),
there u have it.
"Come Get It" featuring Elzhi
- This one is simple. My mans Buckshot "3" was working with
this cat I'd been trying to fuck with since I first heard
him (Maurice Malone, Hip Hop shop days), Elzhi , - asked 3
to hook- it ¡ up. 3 handed me an adat w/vocals ¡ done deal.
Good looking 3, keep spittin' that fire EL ¡ One.
"Pause"
- My mans used to say - Man, If we had that beat, it's over
for! "Pause" actually came off a beat tape we used to ride
back in 99. Make a long story short, they wanted it, they
got it, that's family. Done with the 3000, a couple of
blunts, a little Red Clay a couple of secret ingredients.
There u have it. ¡ I gotta say this ¡ Frank ¡ n ¡ Dank is
about to blow. 4 real ¡ 4 real.
"B.B.E. (Big Booty Express)"
- This is my baby ¡ This is one of those joints I've heard
in my head from time to time, (crazy right?), but could
never duplicate. Until now ¡ Done with Hi Hat from a 909, an :
oscillator, a metronome click for a kick drum and the
magnificent Triton keyboard and there u have it. Reminds me
of some ol' Terminator shit.
"Beej-N-Dem Pt.2" featuring Beej
- I've always considered Beej one of the illest, making the
collabo easier than groupies. My mans came through ¡ it
seemed like 5mins after I told him about the project, he was :
layin' vocals. Oh yeah, I changed the beat at the last
minute, the original had a sample (didn't have time 2
clear), I hope you dig it. Rugged and Raw! ¡ Beej, come
thru- let's blow one ¡ one.
"Brazilian Groove" EWF
- One of my favourite Earth Wind and Fire grooves. I always
wanted to sample that shit ¡ make another long story short,
I wanted this cover to sound like something a beat digger
could find ¡ feel me? Oh yeah, I left the drums open (for
all you beat heads). I even looped it for you! Enjoy
Frank Bush : Claves
Dwelle : Keyboards, Lead guitar
James Yancey : All other instruments
"It's Like That" featuring Hodge Podge and Lacks
- My mans Shoes gave me some wax with Hodge and Lacks
rhyming on it. Basically, shoes brought them to me and it
was on, in the basement with (1) Adat machine working, they
quickly wrote and dropped verse(s). Funny they actually to
the beat after the song ¡ Peep- to all my beatheads, if you
only knew what I chopped for this! Another thing, they're
not a group.
"Give it up"
- Check it out, EVERYTHING IN THIS BEAT HAS BEEN USED BY
EVERYBODY- SERIOUSLY! I like to freak' shit that's been
abused, just 2 see if I can do something different with it.
There u have it. Rugged and raw. Oh yeah! Beatheads- guess
the 2 breakbeats used for the drum loop ¡ Ha! Ha!
"Rico Suave Bossa Nova"
- If I do something, I gotta do it right ¡ For REAL. I fell
in love with Brazilian music ever since the day I listened
to a Sergio Mendes album, we used to have jam sessions in
the studio. After work was done, one day my mans Karriem
Riggins came through. I asked him for Bossa Nova ¡ he gave
me exactly what I needed ¡ Good lookin', I present to you,
the Rico Suave Bossa Nova'.
Karriem Riggins : Drums, percussion
Frank Bush : Claves
James Yancey : All other instruments
"Featuring Phat Kat"
- I don't have 2 much 2 say about this one, me and Phat just :
get down like that. Wait 4 the LP.
"Shake it Down"
- Shake it down was done by mistake ¡ check it. I had a beat :
block for a minute, I told myself Get yo'ass in the basement :
and make some shit, if you don╣t somebody will! No lie, I
looped the first thing the needle touched ¡ some HAPPY- ASS
FOLK SONG SHIT (just my luck). Trying to be funny, I
filtered the loop. After passing a few blunts I thought of
some rhymes to it ¡ so I finished it. Enjoy. Oh yeah ¡
Beatheads, the loop unfilters at the end ¡ What is it?
"African Rhythms"
- My man Pete from BBE put me up on the original version ¡
Thanks. Of course I wanted to mess with it, but except 4 the :
drum break at the top, There were no breaks in the groove
section, until my cover ¡ no singing, no horns, just raw.
PEEP.
"One"
-The LP closer was done in the basement, the night B4 the
album turn-in-date (as well as the intro). Done in one take
¡ Sorry if I mispronounced or left any names out.
Out-of-sight, out-of-mind, where u at?
