Ik zou deze set ook inderdaad noemen: Green, Automatic For The People, New Adventures in hifi en ook Out of Time erbij.

Absoluut mijden: Monster, Murmer, Accelerate, Up en Reveal.

Hun debuut "Murmur" vind ik juist een prachtig album van R.E.M. en "Up" waarmee R.E.M. op de elektronische weg gaat vind ik ook geslaagd.
Eigenlijk heeft R.E.M. geen enkel zwak album uitgebracht (ik ben het hier volledig eens met Snakeskin). Enkel "Monster" en "Around the Sun" vind ik wat minder (3*) en hun recentste "Accelerate" behoort beslist niet tot het beste van R.E.M. maar mag er ook zijn (3,5*).

Onzin inderdaad. En Up is ook een prima plaat. Reveal is de eerste misser van REM, al staan daar ook nog 2 of 3 nummers op die zeer de moeite waard zijn. Daarna werd het wel echt routinewerk.

Murmur behoort voor mij ook tot de absolute REM-toppers. Vormt met New Adventures en Document de top-3, wat mij betreft.

Ik hoor net op Dolfijn FM dat R.E.M. bezig is met een nieuw album. Lijkt me leuk hoor.

Nu al? Accelerate is nog geen jaar uit

The Posies frontman Ken Stringfellow has said that REM are recording an "old school"- style album.

The singer, who in the past has toured and worked with the Georgia band, recently met up with bassist Mike Mills in his current home city of Paris, where he heard the rough recordings of the proposed follow-up to 2008's 'Accelerate'.

"It's sounding really great, very old school," Stringfellow told NME. "The first track had vocals which were mixed super low which I couldn't understand and I was like, 'Yes a return to form'. Mike was on about pushing the vocals up and I was like, 'No, don't do it'."

REM have recorded their 15th as-yet-untitled studio album with producer Jacknife Lee, who also worked on 'Accelerate'.

"What's cool about classic REM is that you have an electric and acoustic guitar coming along like ," Stringfellow said. "There's a lot of that in there, there's some piano songs too but I didn’t hear a lot of crazy, freaky keyboards and vintage drum machines in there like the period when I was with them."

He added: "It had a very live feel. It's really quite beautiful, some of the recordings were a little bit dark and had just the kind of murk that you would hear on an old REM record. I thought that was a great thing to bring back."

The album is expected to be released next year.

Bertis Downs, reporting from Nashville gives some more information about the new REM records. Anton Corbijn has been doing the photo shoot for the new record, and both Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye are contributing to the record. The band is wrapping up recording in Nashville.

No one knows much of what this record sounds like (well, almost no one), but early word is that its more old school than Accelerate and more diverse.

All going well, songs sounding great; the band, ably assisted by Jacknife and team, in the homestretch of making what sounds to me like a great R.E.M. record. And between New Orleans, Berlin, and Nashville, you would be hard-pressed to find three more musical and inspriing places in which to work.

Blij dat ik ze nog tweemaal live heb mogen aanschouwen, al was dat pas deze eeuw.

Ik ook, al was dat slechts één keer, maar het was wel steengoed.

Hier twee keer, in 1999 en 2005. Eerlijk gezegd kan ik er niet zo rouwig om zijn, al was het in de jaren '90 mijn favoriete band. Na Reveal kon ik er niet zoveel meer mee en ze laten genoeg achter. Ze hebben hun lauweren wel verdiend en wellicht zien we ze nog wel eens terug.

Was er qua albums ook al wel een tijdje op uitgekeken.

Bijna iedereen heeft wel een soort van "brugband". Daarmee bedoel ik de band waardoor je gaat ontdekken dat er meer muziek is dan de top 40 en de platenkast van je ouders. Bands die zelf vaak hits hebben, maar die ervoor gaan zorgen dat je meer wil ontdekken. Voor mij was R.E.M. die band. Niet de enige wel de belangrijste. En daarmee was R.E.M. een essentiele schakel in mijn muzikale smaakontwikkeling.
