New TOTO album — 20 Jan 2005
After all the TOTO members have been writing separately new material for the upcoming new album, they will now start writing and recording together from February 7th, only interrupted by the various shows they are going to play this spring. As far as the direction the new album might take Luke says "Well it's early yet but we want to make this a group effort with some wilder more experimental stuff while still retaining the sound that people like from us. I am quite sure individual members will have some cool self written tunes as well as some of our classic collaborations with familiar names. We WILL see though. I got tunes, Bobby has tunes, Paich, Simon, and I think that Gregg may throw some stuff in with us as well as he is like a member now. Hopefully some Steve Porcaro." Bobby adds "It should be an exciting year for TOTO, and even more so for the fans of the band. We have promised (ourselves, at least) that we would make this CD one of our best efforts, or not release it until it is. That's quite a goal to set for yourself, but it's what we're up against."

enkele reviews van Toto concerten
Amsterdam, Netherlands — 17 February 2003
Wow, this was my first ever concert of Toto! There are no words I can think of to describe this magnificent concert! And I am one lucky son of a bitch to have experienced this magical moment, 'cause the Heineken Music Hall was sold out!!! My favourite songs were the classic hits AFRICA, STOP LOVING YOU and ROSANNA. Beautiful (not a song name, but just a one-word summary of what it sounded like). Just one last thing: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put a DTS-track on the dvd, 'cause that's what your music deserves!
Bobby: the voice of modern rock 'n roll
Simon: number one drummer boy
Mike: the beast of bass
David: godfather of the keys
Steve: the electric Mariachi
Tony: the one that we can't stop loving
John: first-class second voice
While your guitar gently weeps on, I wish you peace and luck for the future. God speed.
Matt, Eindhoven - Netherlands
Hi Guys,
What a great performance in Amsterdam. This was my 4th Toto concert and has the best acoustic. Great to find out that this concert was recorded for the DVD. Buy this one. Bobby what a super voice you have, man. Simon what a solo, in one word Super. One minor point was Africa, that song I'v heard this one better on the other concerts. Please for the DVD show us al the solo's. Thank you for the great evening.
I hope you will come back soon guys,
Klaasjan Mors, Zwolle

Yesterday, I went with my girlfriend to the Toto Concert in the Heineken Music Hall. And I'll tell you... It was awesome. Men, It's been so long ago since I had a concert like this. These Guys still are the best. I couldn't believe the way Steve Lukather played his guitar. He has such a feeling with the music, unbelieveble. But I can't forget Mike Porcaro, with his great bass-guitar solo's, David Paich on his keyboard, and Simon Phillips on the drums. Especially thanks to Bobby Kimball. He's still rollin'. Thank you all guys for the great concert. I love the new song "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from your new album. Keep on Going. We 're looking forward to your next tour.
By The way, Simon, say hi to Bob & Jeannine Sahagen, 188 Rumford Rd. We were there last november. I think you get it.
Keep on going guys,
Simon de Koning, Nieuw-Lekkerland, The Netherlands
Karen Boodt, Alblasserdam, The Netherlands
This was my second TOTO-concert and they were totally awesome! They were playing at the Heineken Music Hall, which is wellknown to have the best aqoustic. Wow, what a great sound!!! And what a great perfomance! They are getting better and better! We were almost standing at the front row with Luke in front of us.
We enjoyed every minute of the concert. This was the best concert ever, and now the morning after I still cannot keep my mind off the concert.
They started off with a new version of GOODBYE GIRL and played al lot of the favourites like AFRICA, CAN'T' STOP LOVING YOU, HOME OF THE BRAVE, WHITE SISTER and some tracks of the new album, including COULD YOU BE LOVED, CAN'T GET NEXT TO YOU and my favourite WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS. Unbelievable how Luke was playing, his guitars really weeps!! He also gave a beautiful solo at a spanish guitar. Luke you're the best!
Thank you, Steve, David, Bobby, Mike, Simon, Tony, John and all the other people behind the scenes, you have made this evening to a great succes!!!
And the most wonderful of all is, that last night the concert was recorded for a DVD, that will be released at the end of this year! I can't hardly wait till it's available. Well guys, the next time you'll come to Holland, we will be there!!
Anoek, the Netherlands
This is a simple review of the best Toto show I've ever seen!! I was in Metz, France at the beginning of the month but imust say they were musically better last night.
I knew they would be filming last night (and that'why we came from France), I also knew they wouldn't joke like they did in Metz. As a singer in a rock band, I have to say Bobby was at his best, really strong voice, running and dancing here and there on stage, great! I can't say more that has already been said by the other reviews. Well, just one thing, last night after the show, wa had the luck to meet the band before leaving with the bus. It was the moment I' ve expected since ten years supporting these guys and I had to drive 1000 miles from home to fulfill my dream....It was really worth it!!!
So see you soon somewhere on the road and thank you.
ps: At last, I'd like to thank the people of the Netherlands cause they're so nice and I'll tell them "you know what rocking means!!"
Keves
Hey guys! Yesterday was a great show. I'm 18 and became a fan when I was fourteen. I missed the 1999 Tour, because I didn't know the band. Every year I was hoping to see you guys live on stage and finally my dream came true!!!!
I was standing in front row on BosPop in July, I was standing in front row in Amsterdam on 18 November and yesterday I made it again!!! FRONT ROW!!!!!!!!!!!! It took us a long time to travel to Amsterdam, so I took a day off!! No school for me that day, hahaha!! When we got there, the place was full of people. Waiting in the freezing cold till 06.30pm! As soon as the doors got open, I ran as fast as I could, many others with me. Everybody was pushing and pulling to get in. I'm not very tall, so I had to make front row (or else I wouldn't see a thing). Well, I'm glad I took a day off!! You guys don't only play great music, but the show is also fantastic!!!! Nobody wants to miss that! Guys, all of you were great. I really enjoyed the show and the beautiful solo's!! I'm a musician myself. I used to sit behind my piano in a coverband and play songs like Hold The Line, Tale Of a Man, Child's Anthem, Jake To The Bone.... Now I play bass in another coverband (playing On The Run and Party In Simon's Pants). Toto learned me so much and I'm still learning!! You guys know what music is about and know how to bring it to your fans. More people should learn. I can't wait to buy the DVD and play along with you guys (just pretending I'm with you, , hahaha!). Please come back soon!
David Paich, I'm your biggest fan!!!!!! Toto Rulezzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!
Jaimie van Hek
WOW! What can I say? My ears and throat are done with... The music became a part of my body. I want to thank Toto, you're the very best! You guys made me feel... well, I haven't got any words for it! This was without a doubt the best day of my life. My boyfriend was very glad afterwards that I persuaded him to wait for four hours, although it was *very* cold outside. But because we were so early, we were on the first row! I was right in front of my big hero, Luke, and he looked at me all the time! It was so fantastic! This was only my second concert, I'm 15 years old, but I wish I was born 25 years earlier... Keep on rockin' guys! Love you...
Maria Meijer, Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
heey guys last night was my first concert of toto and i thought it was awesome you guys are better live than on an studio album. Ive only been fan for about 4 years but hey im only 15 so. Wel anyway thanks for the wonderful night and im looking forward to the DVD.

To discribe this concert there's only one word needed: AWESOME! C ya next time! With love,
Lisa Nieuwenhuizen, Delft, The Netherlands
"The best party-drug in Amsterdam" Amsterdam is "famous" for it's drugs, but last night the gig was the best party-drug you could ever get in Amsterdam!!! What can I say what hasn't been written here on this site? Outside the temperature was below 0 degrees, but inside the Heineken Music Hall it was hot. The band was really incredible, and the audience went crazy from the beginning, everybody was sceaming, singing and dancing. What a good choice to record the DVD here, it will be a great one.Toto played with much energy and even more important, they had a lot of fun on stage. Luke's solo was an example of his technique and improvisation, Simon can play the drums in front of his drumkit, Mike grooved from the bottom of his soul with a great bass solo at the end of Africa, and David had much fun and played good as always, he was slamming on his keyboard during English Eyes. They don't have any airplay on the radio and tv, they don't have hitsingles but the concerts are attracting a lot of people, the gig yesterday was sold out again (about 6,000 people), as it was in November last year. To me this says enough, this band is incredible and after 25 years still rocking. To all the critics and people who write negative about Toto, you think you know a lot of music, but you really don't. As Luke sayed yesterday, they play for the fans and friends, so keep on going making music, and come back for the real music-lovers.
Rob van Hoften, Venlo, The Netherlands
Hello Guys,
I’ve been there again in Amsterdam, like you too ! This amazing show is promising to make a great DVD. I’m looking forward to the release.
Just another sold out show, like we’ve seen before in the 25 years of the best musicians band I know. Fu..A ! J
It was an honor to have been there again. Keep on rocking..
with big compliments and happy anniversary and good health to you and your family,
Eric J. Veltman (not always right, but never wrong..)
How do they do it ??? Keeping the public happy every single time they come out to play ? We are not worthy guys ... you are THE best !!
Yesterday in Amsterdam proved it. Us Dutchies are very proud that the band choose Holland to record their DVD and we tried to make be the best audience ever !!
I made sure to have front row "seats" to see the band play their hearts out (waiting in line freezing my ass off did not matter). The best word to describe the concert: They had FUN full stop !! Fun with the audience, fun amongst themselves, FUN FUN FUN !! And it showed. I gotta mention David (the Godfather) as I have never seen him as bright and shiney as in this show - he was funny, had some great dancemoves that had us laughing for minutes and interacted with the crowd constantly. Simon did a fantastic drum solo again (does he really only have two hands ?), Mike had his grooving moment in Africa, Tony was great in Stop Loving You, Bobby sang his heart out and hit notes I have never heard him hit (excellent) and - Mr. Entertainment himself - Luke give his heart to us yet again in all the guitar solos he did (which were loads and minutes long), the man is and always will be a Guitar God and can still start a very succesfull career as stand up comedian
The playlist did not change from the last shows, but who cares when you have waited years to hear oldies but goldies like Waiting For Your Love, Afraid Of Love, Don't Stop Me Now and Gift With A Golden Gun !
So ... absolute fabulous show guys and I cannot wait to see the DVD and relive it all again !!
Christa van der Starre, the Netherlands

Big hello from AMSTERDAM.
Yesterday (feb 17 2003) at the Heineken Music Hall they played the stars from heaven.
I've been a fan from the beginning, and until now this concert was the f...... greatest!!
Steve, Mike, David, Simon, Bobby and Tony played at their best.
The concert was into the groove because of the perfect restyled old songs.
And everywhere camera's because of the DVD they where filming. I hope the DVD comes out very soon, so we can feel the vibe again. Thanx guys and god bless Jeffrey Porcaro and George Harrison.
And also great for dedicating "Home Of The Brave" to stop the war!!!
Tony den Doop from the band NORULEZ, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Oh my god!!!!!!!!!!!! The only words I can speak at the moment are: "TOTO, TOTO and TOTO!" They really rocked the roof of the Heineken Music Hall in Amterdam!Everybody was singing allong, screaming and having fun.Including myself, because there is almost nothing left of my voice! Me and my lovely girlfriend were standing right in front and we could see that TOTO enjoyed playing tonight! Ohhh, I love these guys, they must be supernatural!!!!!! Toto you'll be in my heart and the rest of my body forever! And the best part is they filmed the entire show for an upcomming live-DVD. I can"t wait to have that DVD in my hands!!! And believe me you want to have it also!!!!!!!!!! Thank you TOTO for this amazing evening. It really is unforgetable! Lots of love for all of you,
Jos Aalders, The Hague, The Netherlands.
Hey there!
This was the very best kick-ass gig I ever went to! TOTO really kicked royal ass! They came back to Amsterdam, to the Heineken Music Hall, known for its great acoustics, to record their DVD. TOTO picked the Netherlands for their DVD recordings because of the purity of the support in the country. Knowing that TOTO isn´t in the hitparades anymore and that they aren´t getting a lot of commercial support, but still that their gigs are pretty much always sold out here: that´s what they love about our country and why they keep coming back.
Needless to say that there were a lot of cameras on above and around the stage. Personally I didn´t care ´cause I´m 6 ´3 ft and I was standing in one of the front rows so my view on the stage was pretty good. Being a musician myself I must say that these people really really know what music means. I still have sooo much to learn! The level of collective performance is unequaled. The timing and feel of those people is so incredibly good!
They played a wide variety of all the songs they ever recorded / performed. Besides some golden oldies from the first albums they also played some songs of the Through the Loooking Glass album. Still my favorite song is Rosanna, if I´d really had to chose one.
For everyone who is considering to go and buy that DVD: please do. It will be a must for every musician and every person that just loves good music. A real classic before it even appears!
TOTO: PLEASE DO GO ON FOR MANY YEARS! YOU ROCK!
being left in pure amazement and admiration,
Jeroen Segers

A short but clear review of the Feb 17th 2003 Toto concert in Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam:
This was absolutely the BEST concert I have heard in the past few years of ANY band. I am looking forward to the DVD.
Best Regards,
Peter Notermans (Maastricht, Holland)
Hi guys, you couldn't have picked a better place and a better time for a DVD recording. Yesterday's show was nearing absolute perfection, without being clinical. It was even better than the previous show in Amsterdam last November. Special hats off for Bobby this time, his singing was very convincing and crystal clear. It caused him a hoarse throat after the show.... Looking very much forward to the DVD. And eehhh.... please do not cut the drumsolo
Piet, Eindhoven, Netherlands
Great expectations, partly fullfilled.
Supurb sound at Heineken Hall, Amsterdam.
Cause of the name of the tour, I'dd expected more songs from the latest album, pitty, only 3 and a half!
Again problems in the low-bass department, aspacially when the octivider was tried out.
After 25 years beiing a fan and having all the records (even Dune, David Roberts and Boz Scags), having seen more than 10 concerts, this was one of the best and even the best livesound TOTO ever produced.
I wonder when the DVD is due?
Cheers!
Guus Willemse, Utrecht, Nederland
Even though I've been a fan for many years this was my first Toto concert. And what a concert it was! It is no coincidence the band picked this venue to record their 25th anniversary DVD. The first thing that impressed me was the sound! Awesome! It was to be short the best sounding rock concert I've ever visited. And I can tell you that both as a musician and as a part of the audience I've been to a lot. Second. The superbe musicianship. There is no doubt in my mind that this is the most proficient rock band in the world. Third. Great songs. It felt so good to hear those familiar songs in a supercharged live version. Standing next to the house mixer we were right beneath the audience mike's. I'm sure some of our 'backing vocals' made it to the tape! We couldn't help but sing along. In short we had a great time, my friends and I. And that what it was all about, Steve L. said on more than one occasion. I do have some comments, though. There were some minor screw ups. I doubt that 'Africa' will make it to the DVD without a major bass guitar overhaul. An octivider, was it? It did not sound too cool, but it was only for a moment. Some of Bobby's vocals will definitely need to be repolished in a studio, allthough he did a very good job. The house mixer missed a very important cue on a keyboard break. I'm not sure what song that was, Rosanna I think. And finally, Steve's 'speed and muscle' type playing. First off, I think he's fantastic. An incredible guitar player who just happens to 'sneak in' a very adequate piano solo and of course he's a very gifted singer and composer. But with all that talent I feel he doesn't need to do all that "I'll impress the hell out of you' guitar playing. Unless he really likes it, I guess. And I suppose that's the case. But personally I go for a more communicative way of playing. All in all it was a great concert, one to be remembered, and that won't be hard. All I've gotta do is buy the DVD!
Han Bavinck, Utrecht Netherlands
WOOH, I think that's the only thing I can say about the TOTO show of last night.
It sounded even better than last fall when I also saw them in Amsterdam, I wonder how many bands get better every time U see them but I guess TOTO is one of the happy few.
It was really amazing how sharp the boys were playing specially Luke, Simon and Mike (every time during Simon's great performances I'm looking if there's somebody else also playing the drums).
Fortunately for all the TOTO there will be a DVD made of last night's concert and I can assure U that U will be as astonished as I was when I saw this best gig so far.
Thank U guys, I'm already looking forward to next time.
Kenneth
You guys were WONDERFUL!!! GREAT!! AWESOME!! Yesterday me and my girlfriend went to the Heineken Music Halll for the ToTo concert. YOU GUYS ROCKED AMSTERDAM!!! And we were very pleasantly surprised by the fact that you were shooting everything on camera for a DVD! Can't wait till that comes out. TOTO ROCKS! Thanks for an unforgettable evening!!
Erik Bosman
Last time I went to TOTO, that was last year, in February. That was a very great show.
But yesterday, it was AMAZING MAN!!!!!! And yes, we finally (Elly, a.k.a Tiny E and me) stood in the front row.I loved it when they played English Eyes & Gift with a golden gun and Child’s Anthem and Goodbye Elenore and.... Oh, what the hell, I loved every song they played!! And all the solo-parts the guys played were.... AMAZING!!!!!
I just want to say that I’m very happy tobe a fan ofa great, no,A VERY AMAZING BAND!!!!
Richelle
Zwolle, Netherlands — 15 February 2003
Hi Toto!
I went to your concert together with my brother in Zwolle (The Netherlands) early this year. Waited afterwards by the wrong bus (crewbus) but hey, it was only below 10 degrees Celcius so we kept busy jumpin' around to stay warm! I lost allmost 10 kilo's of weight... It was all worth for! What a great show you guys STILL bring together.
Saw your show for the first time back in the 80's for the Fahrenheit album with Jeff Porcaro (Together with Carlos Vega he was the best groovy, soulfull and passioned allround (ghost-notes)drummer ever) in Ahoy Rotterdam. After the dead of Jeff (I can imagine the pain for Mike en Steve of losing him because I know what true brotherhood and love means...) I thought Toto was finished... There could never be another drummer like Jeff. And there he was...Never heard of the "not tall"- man...My God, what a great drummer. Simon, you take Toto across borders they've never been before! Jollygood Chap! There's only one thing... Charlie Watts called me saying he was a bit dissapointed that you copycat him in a little Stones intermezzo during your Toto-concert. He ensured me that he never had and never will copycat you during his new tour.
Mike, I hoped that all the bassplayers I play or played with could hear your performance. You're the most realiable, steady, rockin', not ever-false-notes playing- bassguitarist I ever heard. I'm still looking for that kind of bassplayer. Ehmmm ...Mike... Could I borrow you from Toto? For just let's say ehm... about... the next 25 years?
Bobby Kimball impressed me also. Are there any b*lls left in your legging to squeeze for the high notes? Wow! What a voice! The one and only leadsinger of Toto!!! (Offcourse together with Steve and David) Why the hell did you ever left home and gave your chow to some straycats? (J.-.M. B., I'm still pissed that you're on my DVD "Live at the Zenith" but the funpart is that you're voice appears only a few times; on one hand counted. And with the other hand I can Fast Forward it. Even your appearance. It's a pitty...The man can't even playback himself......) Welcome back Bobby!!!!
Steve, what can I say, I'm sure my mum didn't name me after you (but after McQueen) but I'm proud to wear the same name as the second legend on guitar. As you always say, Jimmy was no. 1, but you are definetly the living legend no. 2. ! Your partner back home must be very happy with your quick fingers! (I mean; I esume you type your letters or e-mails to your home just as quick as your solo's
) Same for you, if you're searching for a nice band to play with... call me at any time...Our reportoir contain some evergreens like: ninetyninetynine, Jack and the bonestack, Dave's goin' diving etc...I'm sure you'll pass the audition.
David... Last but not least... I still practice and practice on your solo's, even timestretching/shifting doesn't give me the answer to all of the notes you've played. Especialy a part of the end-solo in Georgy Peorgy (Live at the Zenith; you know, with the guy who can't playback himself?) you'd played. I begin to wonder if YOU know what the notes were you've played during live solo's? And by the time I can play your solo so so, you come with some new amazing stuff! And your hands... How the hell could these big claws move so fast over the keys? My neighbour is moving out.. maybe you can become my new neighbour, so I can take some lessons? I even made the owner of my local music store happy when I showed a picture of your equipment, saying I want to buy that. So... I'm ready!!!
Toto, I hope we meet someday person to person, especially David. (So I can wake him that his keyboardstand isn't a keyboardstand but a drumstand...fire the roadie (or expell him to a land like Gibraltar) who switched your stand with Simon's) Continue this piece of history in popmusic so I can pass your music to my children. I'll support and sponsor you by buying your albums / dvd's, okay?
Greetings
Steve Drinhuyzen
Holland
Hi, guys! I just read the reviews from my fellow Toto-worshippers about the Zwolle concert. I have to agree that the concert was really awesome (apart from the acoustics sometimes) but this time I missed my all time favourite "I'll be over you". The last time I heard it live was in Groningen and I had to use two handkerchiefs to wipe my tears then !! I hope that you'll choose Groningen again the next time you tour in Holland! Furthermore I'd like to compliment you with your new singer/guitarplayer Tony; he' s a real asset to your band! His voice has the high pitch I remember Joseph had and he really complements Dave's, Bobby's and Steve's voices. Apart from that he has great legs! Love you all, especially Mike !
Lisette , Akkrum, The Netherlands
My first time ever TOTO concert. And that in my home town !! Together with my father (who is a TOTO fan for a long time) and my brother in law I got in line to get in. What a wall of sound these guys produce !! Sometimes not that great due to the bad acoustics of the IJsselhallen. I mist most of Steve’s acoustic solo (L) But besides that they blew me away with their excellent performance, man that Steve can play his guitar. I had a great time. The 3-cd greatest hits won’t come out off the cd-player for a long time. Thanx Steve, Bobby, Dave, Simon, Mike and Tony
Michel, Zwolle the Netherlands
This was my first concert of toto. It was all that I expected and more.....MUCH MORE!!!!!! It all sounded perfect and they played all the songs I'd hoped for. It started with a part of Childs Anthem within the intro, and they just kept on going. There were no flaws what so ever. I'm still in ecstasy. Simon, Steve, David, Mike, Bobby and Tony, you guys are the best musicians I've ever seen. Keep it up, and I can't wait until you guys return with a new album and a new tour!!!!
Micha Krijtenburg, Voorburg, The Netherlands
In a few words:
TOTO-ally out of this world, so good, funky, pure rock etc.etc. You all played fabulous last night in Zwolle.
Thanks for a really great concert David, Steve, Mike, Simon, Bobby and other crewmembers.
Your great musical talent brings goosebumps to my skin whenever I hear great songs like: Gently wheeps my guitar and I won´t hold you back.
I´m a fan from the very start of your career and saw you play for many times in Holland and Germany and hope you will continue to do so for many years to come.
Hope to see and hear your new DVD soon, which you will record in Amsterdam I believe.
Greetings,
Piet Minnee, Almelo, Holland
My first concert ever to Toto. I don't think it gets any better. I'm listening to Toto since I was a teenager. Always enjoyed their music very much. Till a friend askes me to come with her to the concert. No doubt; Yes, I'll come!! I never thought they would play so extremely well live. I had a great view to the stage and could see the expressions on the guys faces. I could see that they were playing with their heart and soul. While listening to every note they played and sang, as loud as it gets, I got the shivers. So very well played. Rocking like I never heard before. Simons solo let the air in my lungs vibrate and Steve almost let me weep. Bobby was singing like it wasn't from earth, unbelievable. But now I heard it with my own ears. David was also wonderful at the keyboard, a real performer! Mike was in his own world, playing the stars falling out of the sky. Love it, love it!!! Guys, thank you for a wonderful unforgettable evening. And next time you'll come to The Netherlands, I'll be there! I can't stop loving you!
Jacqueline van den Bosch, Venhuizen, The Netherlands
What a great concert! Unfortunately, the tickets for 17 february are sold out. Otherwise, I was there to. Thank you Steve, for the plectrum. My nephew (8 years old) was infront of the stage and he's got it under his pillow now ! Love,
Nicky from Amsterdam
Last year November we went to see Toto in Oberhausen and we hoped to see them again really soon. It was a (very pleasant) surprise to find out that they would come to our hometown. So, yesterday we took our bicycle and went to our 5th Toto concert ever. Showing up early payed off, because we had front row places. What a great view we had!We thought the band would never get better than what we saw in November. Boy, were we wrong! What we saw last night was 1000 times better. The guys were really having fun on stage and so was everyone else who was there (Steve blamed it on his silly shirt). All our favorite songs were played and the fans were singing along and screeming their lungs out. I'm sure there were a lot of people who had sore throats at the end of the evening (at least we did). So, once again, Steve, Mike, Simon, Dave, Bobby, Tony and the audience, thank you, thank you, thank you very much for an unforgettable evening. And like we said before, hopefully we will see you again soon. Keep on rocking, you guys are the best!!!
Daniëlle and Gea from Zwolle, Holland
This was the second time to see them play on this tour. The first time it was in november in Amsterdam. One word, rock. November was good but now it was even better. The show rocked from the first note they played till the lights went on. They were on a roll. Bobby was giving one off his best performences. And then the solo by Mike, funky!! And what can i say about Steve, well, he played his guitar like he was playing a woman. Rock and roll all over the world. Off course with David it was fun all over the place. And the solo by Simon, it was like a wake up call for mother earth. So I can really say they where playing like they where knocking on heavens door. It was one off the best concerts i've seen by Toto, and i can't wait to see them again on monday in Amsterdam. So keep the music and the fun allive.

Hi, At the 15th of february, it was the third time for me to visit a Toto Concert. This time was special. The band, especially Steve, was in a "silly mood". During the whole concert Dave and Steve were making jokes, for example; Steve once referred to Dave's penis. The show seems to be shorter than the previous one I visited, the one in Amsterdam in november 2002. The guys were looking tired, allthough they gave the full 110%. Steve's voice wasn't co-operative sometimes and Bobby had to take some rest during some songs. The venue in Zwolle wasn't the best acoustical hall Toto ever played (Amsterdam was better). The setlist hasn't changed since the gig in Amsterdam but the played a part of a Rolling Stones song "miss you", very cool. Steve's solo was very cool and Simon found a new way to play the drums, not behind the drums, no he played the bassdrums in front of the drumset, very cool.Guys, keep up the good work, you're the best!

Fürth, Germany — 14 February 2003
Hi you all,
TOTO rocks Fürth! The show was more than brilliant, they're always getting better. This was my 3rd show on TTLG Tour and it still gives me a shiver to see and hear them. I wonder if Simon is the man with the two brains, four arms and four legs, incredible. And now my man on the guitar - Luke. Awesome, perfect and so charming.
God bless you and thanks for this birthday party!
Good rockin' Amsterdam!

Erfurt, Germany — 13 February 2003
Toto was playing in Erfurt on Thursday and it was my first concert ever. WOW. 5 guys were able to animate a whole hall. The monster on the guitar, Luke, was plaing a GREAT solo on his Ovation. Are you sure he has just 5 fingers on each hand? And Simon just amazing at his solo spot. I'm so happy, I'm not eleptic, because of the lights flashing sevral times a second. Not to forget the other members: Bobby did his job well, like Mike and David. And I was very surprised of Tony Spinner. His interpretation of "Stop loving you" was fascinating and very well done. But the most fascinating thing was that all members of Toto were having fun, even after having played for half a year and that they played different songs than the last time in Hamburg last year, my father said. So keep on making music and especially having fun. C U the next time you're on tour.
Tobias Nickschick, Wernigerode, Germany
What a great concert. I’m still like in trance - havin’ all this wonderful songs in my ears. It was my seventh TOTO concert since 1986 and theseyou guys are getting better and better. I was blown away.
Last time I saw TOTO on Oct 31, 2002 at Frankfurt, the beginning of the 2002/2003 25th anniversary tour. We had a great time but as my brother has to use a wheelchair we had so stay at the very left side of the hall and we saw only half of the stage. So this time my 2nd brother and me came in to be right in front of you guys.
As we arrived at the "Thueringen Halle" at 6.30pm we realized some sound-check tunes out of the building. We could enter a side entrance and a more than friendly security guy (thanks again man) allowed us to listen until the check was finished. Back from 1974 until the late 80ies my 2 brothers and me also used to play in a local band. Since those days TOTO where our favourite musicians and so everybody may understand that we had the opportunity to watch and listen parts of the sound-check will remain unique and unforgettable moments.
The following show we spent right in front of Luke. What shall I say: 2 ½ most exciting hours of powerful TOTO classics changed with dramatic solos (Simon we thought you would bring your Mannheim birthday present with you), a medley with "Childs anthem" ,"English eyes" ...and very silent and soft passages where only Dave and Luke played some tunes of the Dune-Stuff. Mike grooved again at his best. Bobby (where did he get these pants?) shouted out his soul... Dave was "The snuggness" in person.I loved the style jazz parts and how he came down to the front of the stage, Teddy-bear with Bowler-hat, to conduct the enthusiasted crowd. And Luke of course. My eyes tried to follow his fingers. They (my eyes) are still burning. I won’t forget to mention JJ and Tony Spinner (compliments: "Stop loving you" - and the second guitar voice in "Bodhisattva"). We really spent a thrilling time.
As Luke repeated several times: they were friends playing for friends. And so I hope we will see us again and again. Perhaps one day in my hometown. We have a nice hall too.
I say thanks
Klaus Spohr, Kassel
Hi,
it was our first Toto gig, and we drove to Erfurt with high expectations. Normally we follow Manfred Mann`s Earth Band but we are always interested in other bands and there are some connections between Toto and MMEB. So we wanted to see Toto now, and we enjoyed every minute! The hall was very well filled by enthusiastic people (we guess around 4500) and on stage - one of the best live acts we ever saw. What a power, what a perfect show, all musicians great and a fantastic teamwork in the band. Only the sound was to us not always clear enough, you could not hear the several instruments from time to time but got only one big "mixture". Some seconds later everything was okay again, so we guess it was a sound problem and not a problem of the band. We had seen Simon already before in one of his solo projects but can only repeat it - also to us he is one of the best drummers of the world. Especially interesting to us - to compare Steve with the Earth Band guitarist, Mick Rogers. And we cannot say now who is better, they both play on the same very high level
Steve did a fantastic job there just infront of us and we enjoyed especially the slower songs and the guitar solos. The band caught their audience from the first minute and everybody in that hall enjoyed the show so much, till the very last chords of the encores. BTW - Toto had in Erfurt one of the best light shows we saw up to now - not too much, but always well working with the music and with great spots. So we can only say - thank you to the band and the crew for a fantastic night and we will see you again sometime!
Regards
Karin and Thomas

With love,

The playlist did not change from the last shows, but who cares when you have waited years to hear oldies but goldies like Waiting For Your Love, Afraid Of Love, Don't Stop Me Now and Gift With A Golden Gun !So ... absolute fabulous show guys and I cannot wait to see the DVD and relive it all again !!

Greetings

Eddy, The Netherlands

Regards
Karin and Thomas

recensie van Toto in 2003:
Mike Porcaro with TOTO
live in Concert by T-trz
I've always had the feeling that TOTO never got the level of recognition that was proportional to their real artistic weight. It always seemed to boil down to:
"Hey man, TOTO is one of my favorite bands"
"Who?"
"Toto, you know, the band"
"Never heard of them"
"Impossible! Don't you know the tune 'Africa'?"
"Hmmm..."
(Sung in ear-shattering falsetto) "Itsgonnatakealottodragmeawayfromyouuuuu"
"Ah! yes. What was the band name again?"
Get the point?
Truth is that Toto, as a collective, is a household name with regards to quality songs, vocals and musicianship, marrying huge songwriting skills and serious fusion chops to create that killer mix.
And, yeah, let's not forget that, as individuals, the five guys who are sought-after studio musicians have played on all your favorite records, and I'm not kidding about that. Take a look at their website. Go to the musicians' personal pages for a complete discography that's so big you'd have to take a day off to ponder it. Give it a spin, it's worth the visit.
The band is right now in the middle of a world tour celebrating their 25th anniversary, and it's bringing around one of the best shows in the business. I went to see them in Milan, and that was quite an experience. The venue was packed to the max, counting around 8000 souls under its roof.
The stage, interestingly complex, yet not cluttered, was dominated by the keyboard and drum risers at different stage levels, linked by small ramps. Under the massive lighting system the only backdrop was a big frame intertwined with a huge, well, let's call it a blanket, heavily draped.
At 9:00 PM, as dependable as death and taxes, the concert took off. Plus marks to the sound engineer who, in a difficult venue like this, still manages to keep the sounds crisp and dynamic. There was some missing detail on the low frequencies, but as we all know, those wayward 80Hz subharmonics are difficult to tame.
The band swarmed on stage and took command with a re-vamped version of 'Girl Goodbye', all tom-phrasing, tight bass and kicked out punctuations. For the next two hours and 30, the audience was held under the spell of these five professionals (augmented by two side musicians, more about that later).
Steve Lukather was in top-notch form and is the gravity center of the show. With his Ernie Ball 'Luke' in hand, he sings, jokes, runs, introduces, and, yeah, delivers the most outrageous guitar work (a little bit self-indulgent with the volume on solo settings, maybe?).
Above him is David Paich, in a pinstripe outfit, with his ubiquitous hat, on Korg Triton and Yamaha Motif 8, giving birth first to a blues-spiced, moving to a cutting-edge voicing. For all the years these folks have been together, he still sits on top of the most current keyboard voicings.
In the middle of it all, Mr. Bobby Kimball proves (as if there was any need) he's The Voice of Toto. On the other side of the stage, on the riser, the menacing mass of Simon Phillips' TAMA monster drum kit submerges the beholder both visually and sonically, with otherworldly grooves and breakneck fills.
At the bottom of it all, holding it all together and focused like a sniper, Mike Porcaro, with a beautiful red Peavey Cirrus 5-string in hand. As already mentioned, the band was flanked by two guest musicians: John Jessel on additional keyboards and Tony Spinner on his Les Paul, playing rhythm guitar, doubles and harmonics with Luke's leads. To my surprise, he'd been chosen to sing 'Stop Loving You', which isn't the easiest song in the world to do. And he pulled it off admirably.
As you might know, Toto produced an album last year, a quite interesting one, considering the fact it contains only cover versions of some songs the guys in the band felt good about. With a discography so rich and complex, I would have been disappointed if the guys had chosen to leave behind some of their own great music to play somebody else's. So my main concern was that I didn't want to see them acting as a cover band. (Editor's note: Having recently been released from a long term label contract, the liner notes indicate the band's joy at being able to pay tribute to those that impressed and influenced them without having the restrictions of trying to carve another radio hit. A bit of happy self-indulgence perhaps?)
However, I learned something that night. Those copy tunes blew me away! Their rendition of Bob Marley's 'Could You Be Loved' was soooo funky. Now I am not into Steely Dan, so their version of 'Bodhisattva' was no big deal to me, but one of the true highlights of the evening was the mesmerizing version of the Beatles' 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', played in memory of the late George Harrison. "The reason I play guitar"; said Luke.
Toto re-wrote this classic, turning it into a graceful loop-driven, ambience-laden lullaby (great bass part on this one, even if the song was screaming for a fretless). And yes, the band definitely played 'Africa', 'Rosanna', 'Georgy Porgy', 'Hold The Line', 'I Won't Hold You Back' (which received the same re-vamping as 'While My Guitar'.
But the main course of the evening was made of medleys of old and not often-played songs: 'Gift with a Golden Gun', 'Lion', 'Hydra', 'Child's Anthem' and 'Till The End'. Of course there was some time set aside for impressive solo performances by of some of them. Luke's acoustic guitar solo, which climaxes on the opening of Yes' 'Roundabout', now that was worth the ticket alone.
David even threw in a small part of 'Paul meets Chani' from the soundtrack of the movie Dune. Toto scored this in the mid '80s. And then the band fired off other precious gems like 'Afraid of Love', 'English Eyes', 'Home of the Brave' (powerful!), and 'White Sister'.
What more could you ask for? Well, an unbelievable drum solo by the one and only Simon Phillips.
Ok, I know what you're thinking: "Hey pal, take a look at the URL: it says 'Bassinside', so cut the crap and just tell us about the bass player". Gotcha! Mike Porcaro is one of the best in this genre, he could be taken as a role model. For the tech-heads, here is his set-up:
1 x Sabine RT-601 Rack Tuner
1 x Samson UHF Receiver Model UR-5D
1 x Shure UHF Receiver Model U 4D
1 x SWR SM 900 Bass Amplifier
1 x Trace Elliot RA 500 Bass Amplifier
2 x Alembic F-2B Bass Pre-Amplifiers
1 x Direct-Input Box
2 x SWR 8 by 8 Speaker Cabs.
1 x Peavey 5-string Cirrus Bass Guitar
1 x Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray Bass Guitar
Mike Porcaro has held this gig for so long because he is the right man for the job and the role needed in Toto. While everybody in the band was flailing around and soloing all over the top, he kept on nailing the groove. No mistakes. No frills. No solos. No effects.
He has all the elements I feel needed to be that right man for the job. He just played his Cirrus, for the whole concert. He would alternate techniques, getting spot-on feeling for each individual song or song section. He mainly played with his fingers, but used plectrum and a little bit of slap as well (meet you all the way Tak-tak-t-ta-tak! Rosanna yeah!)
While everybody else was running around on stage, he was the symbol of understatement and focus. And you know, the thing that struck me most about him was his sound. While punchy and definite, if you can picture this, it had an almost 'rubber-like' quality in it.
Then I understood…After leaving behind my preconceived notion of what to expect from a bassist from this era, over the top and demanding attention, Mike went for a functional and entirely useful sound, the right sound. He wasn’t after the attention; he was interested in what would make the band sound the best it could. In the end, why go for an over-the-top sound, when something that would compliment the drums would work much better? The oddest thing is that by taking the role he did, he drew all the attention he needed. In turn, he is integral to why Toto has weathered the twists and turns of a fickle public and sounded so good live and in the studio for all these years.

Maar goed, even iets serieuzer nu.

March 12th 2005: Writing and recording
Luke: "Well, we have 3 keeper trax that are really burnin! They are band written songs and we are cutting LIVE, no click trax, and Paich AND Greg are playin together LIVE as well the rest of us.
This is real classic Toto stuff that stretches us out of the "pop" thing and more rock but with a groove and melodies that are killer. A few "muso" moments but not enough to annoy our old school fans. hahaha. I predict that this will be one of our finest moments as we are truly having so much fun. Simon has been enginnering and the new studio sounds KILLER! We have written 9 things so far and are gonna track those and then go back and bring in personal songs and still write as a band as its seems to have a style all its own and everyone is contributing alot to every piece of music we have written. It's especially cool to see Greg lighting a fire under our asses as he is so into it and it is so fresh that we are ALL digging WAY deeper for the compostions to be the best they can be. Nice havin 2 keyboards again ! When we are done with the trax Steve Porcaro will put his touches on everything all you keyboard freaks will be VERY happy! Still plenty of guitars though. haha.
We are shooting to finish this record mid JUNE before we all go out touring and we are starting to book the NEW worldtour 2006

Steve Lukather over het nieuwe album:
April 24th 2005: The best thing
Luke: "New record is REALLY REALLY comin out great! I think it will be the best thing we have done for many many years! It's fresh, melodic, groovin, experimental, lots of cool keyboard stuff as Dave AND Greg are playin on everything and Steve Porcaro and Lenny Castro will be on stuff soon. We are gonna have a few guests on it as well. Can't give too much on that yet but we will tell ya when we cut their parts and we are using for sure! haha
Simon's studio is magic and it sounds unreal. Si is one HELL of an engineer!
Phil Soussan came in and engineered for us while Simon went on his drum clinic tour and he was great to work with as always.
We couldn't be having more fun and really and really stretching ourselves to do the best we can on every part or vocal or lyric etc..
We are throwing Album titles around.
New WORKING title IS:
"YOU ARE ONLY AS OLD AS THE GIRL YOU FEEL"
Think about it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
We will no doubt go thru 100's before we pick a serious one. "

Luke: We live in a world were being really good is considered a sin…you’re slick, you’re soulless, you’re not really happening. If you wear black and white or red and white and fuck your sister, then you can be a really big rock star. You know what matters to me? I get a call from Herbie Hancock... I'm in Italy in my Hotel room 3 am in the morning and Herbie Hancock finds me and calls me in my hotel room and says “do you want to come and play with me and Wayne Shorter at the Tokyo Jazz Festival? Get your guys over here". Herbie fucking Hancock! Miles Davis played with him, one of the best musicians in the world! Any cunt ass muthafucker who says they don't like me because they've heard 3 songs in 25 years, and never bothered to look deeper than Rosanna, Africa and Hold the line... they think I'm some soulless cunt then you know what, that's what I am!

Well, you know, that's the thing of our band. It's so funny, they say that we suck but if you look at the discography, how come those great artists wanted us to play on their records? Because we suck? I don't think so.
I mean, we became the poster boys for 'this is a band you're supposed to hate.' If there was a critic's school, the first thing you'd learn on day 1 is, 'this is a band you have to hate.' Years and years and years ago during the Toto IV tour we had a guy come out, he was writing for Rolling Stone… Timothy Schmidt was out with us singing background after he left the Eagles. He came to check out what Timothy was doing and I ended up getting high with him…and I got it out of him… “Like what is it about you guys. I'm a nice guy, we're hanging out in my room, fucking getting drunk and doing whatever”.
The guy's now the president of a major label. Now I'm not going to say who it is because it'll get me in trouble. But he's the president of a major label, he started out as a little puke writing for Rolling Stone, he started telling me, “Look to be honest with you, I think some of your stuff's cool but we're not allowed to write good stuff about you. You're the band to hate.” Because we're really good musicians they thought that we were put together by some corporate people.
They didn't realize that we were a high school band, we just happened to be really good players that could actually, …that were schooled enough to read and be able to do stuff. To be able to create on the spot and play really well in an era when that actually mattered. And we had hit records that they were mystified by. They thought that we had no soul because our records were slick and polished. Well we actually sat there and played that. There was no computers to fix shit back then.
You had to get a performer. So if it was played well and it was in tune, we layered the vocals. We sounded so good they hated us. That was when the punk thing was just happening: The Clash, The Sex Pistols. We were at the end of the '70s. We were holding on to what we dug. People we wanted to sound like was like Steely Dan except with a harder edge. From that point 'till now…
Then we won the Grammy. That was great but we told Rolling Stone magazine to fuck off. They wanted to put us on the cover.
They had been trashing us for so long we said OK this is our chance to get even. Fuck you Juan Leonard, he's just going to trash us anyway. And the guy tweaked into the sun. No one had ever turned down the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Which by hindsight I wish we hadn't done. But at the same time, we made our statement and then we won the Grammy and they didn't even write about it.
