Olympic Village, 6AM (2016)

Een rarity uit 2016. Een theme song of sorts voor de Olympische Spelen van Rio. De video is zelf gemonteerd door Stuart, met beelden uit de Britse OS-historie en ook beelden uit zijn eigen hardloop'carriere'. Beelden van alleen track and field-helden, de ware OS dus
Stuart zei er dit over:
Belle and Sebastian dig the Olympics, love the Olympic ideal, love that the world gets together for a big 'sports day' once every four years. We can't be part of it, though we'd like to be. So we recorded a piece of music with Rio in mind, specifically the Track and Field. Here it is: “Olympic Village, 6am.”

Een leuke instrumental, maar veel meer dan een leuk en luchtig tussendoortje is het ook weer niet.

Paper Boat (1998)

En we gooien er nog een rarity achteraan. Paper Boat werd uitgebracht in 2015, met video van de band op vakantie in Aberdeen.
Het betreft hier echter een oudje, geschreven door founding member Stuart David zo rond 1998. In 2015 bracht hij zijn memoir uit, In the All-Night Café (nog niet gelezen overigens) en ter ere daarvan werd dit nummer uitgebracht. De opname komt overigens van The Black Sessions, een soort van Franse Peel-sessie. Een studioversie is er dus nooit van gekomen.
Een mooi typisch early Belle-liedje, inclusief trompetje.
Zo simpel, en puur, kan muziek zijn. De video past er wonderwel bij.

Passion Fruit (2004)

Het werd weer eens tijd voor een instrumental
Een korte zelfs met 2,5 minuut, maar dat mag de pret niet drukken, want het heeft een erg fijne drive en vibe.
Oorspronkelijk was deze track onderdeel van een andere B&S song genaamd Stop, Look and Listen, die nog langs moet komen en een b side is van de I'm a Cuckoo single. Het outro van die song hebben ze om een of andere reden er los van gemaakt en een eigen naam gegeven en op Third Eye Centre geplaatst.
Ik vind het een erg fijne track moet ik zeggen
Een lekker drive en flow dus, fijn gitaar -en xylofoonwerk en het werkt toe naar een crescendo op het eind waar er ook blazers tevoorschijn komen.
Het had zo op de Pulp Fiction soundtrack gepast bijvoorbeeld. Ik moet sowieso erg denken aan de Nederlandse band The Treble Spankers met hun Hasheeda album, ook met instrumentals die een Pulp Fiction sfeer hebben.
Kortom een aangename track

Perfect Couples (2015)

En weer eens eentje van hun laatste album, Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance. Een behoorlijk koerswijziging was dat, vooral door de electro-renaissance van sommige nummers. En Perfect Couples valt daar ook wel een beetje in. Een funky track zoals ze er (nog) niet veel gemaakt hebben. Begint leuk met de trommels, het heeft ook wel duidelijk een Talking Heads-vibe. Al met al gewoon een erg leuk nummer, maar net wat minder dan de andere twee dance-influenced songs op het album. Het nummer is al een van de langsten op Girls, maar er is ook een extended version, inclusief hipster video (zie de link). Ook leuk!

Op zich wel een aangename song met een dancy vibe, maar mij iets te rechtlijnig. Weinig heel interessante elementen.

Photo Jenny (1997)

Aaah old school Belle, zucht... Maakten ze ze zo nog maar
Dit is een track van de befaamde Lazy Line Painter Jane EP. Mooie tekst van Stu weer over everyday life, wel vaak over excentrieke mensen of aangelegenheden. Teksten van de straat ook wel, of om een sfeer of tijdgeest aan te geven. Dan de muziek...die is zo zalig. Sowieso heeft het die goeie wat snellere Belle drive met allerlei lagen van instrumenten. Heerlijk die gitaar in het begin bijvoorbeeld die als een hemelse harp klinkt. Deze vroege manier van zingen van Stu bevalt mij persoonlijk het meest. Mooi ook de vocale bijdragen van de medebandleden hier. Fijn het orgel en die blazers en helemaal die lovely pianomelodie eronder. Dan nog een fluit, de gitaren blijven ook gewoon mooi meedoen en als toetje een fantastische outro met geweldige gitaarklanken die aan Sarah Records doen denken. Deze voortstuwende Belle songs die naar een crescendo werken met allerlei instrumenten zijn de beste die ze hebben. Voortreffelijk!

Het had zo een single kunnen zijn.
Het heeft wel die Dirty Dream-vibe ook, of al, en bijna even goed.

Piazza, New York Catcher (2003)

Wat mij betreft het mooiste nummer van Dear Catastrophe Waitress, en misschien wel het beste Belle-nummer van de 21e eeuw.
DCW was een grote career-shift voor B&S, eigenlijk het begin van Belle 2.0 zoals al eerder gememoreerd. Founding member Stuart David en boegbeeld Isobel Campbell waren er niet meer bij en het was maar zeer de vraag of de groep in een nieuwe bezetting overeind zou kunnen blijven. Tegelijkertijd was er de druk om populairder te worden, of in ieder geval weer meer te verkopen dan de vorige. Dat deden ze met een hitproducer (Trevor Horn) en wat gimmicky singles, maar toch verloren ze ook hun eigen geluid niet. En nog het minst op dit fabelachtige nummer, letterlijk en figuurlijk. Een nummer dat, hoe vaak je hem ook hoort, altijd fris blijft.
Het was geen single, en dus ook geen hit, maar het is inmiddels wel uitgegroeid tot hun bekendste song, ook op Spotify hun populairste nummer met bijna 20 miljoen luisteraars.

Een van extra's van hun laatste album, Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance, feitelijk een b-side dus. Helaas niet zo'n topper als Born to Act of A Politician's Silence, wat ook bonustracks zijn en die tot nu toe vrij goed scoren en de top 100 misschien nog wel zouden kunnen halen.
Daar is deze te lichtgewicht voor, ondanks de piggy
Leuk funky Belle-nummer, maar niet veel meer dan dat.
Kudos wel voor 1986 en New Order in de tekst

Na Piggy met zijn Cure-associatie hebben we er nu nog een waarvan ik toen ik de tracklist voor het eerst zag dat het een Cure-cover betrof.
Niets van dat alles dus, het is softe synthpop, het werd bij uitkomst geloof ik meerdere malen vergeleken met ABBA, maar ik vind het meer lijken op de Arcade Fire van vorig jaar, hoewel die ook dezelfde ABBA-verwijten kregen
Hoe dan ook vormt dit samen met Enter Sylvia Plath en The Party Line de synth-Belle zoals we die op Girls in Peacetime eigenlijk voor het eerst tegenkwamen. Een heerlijk duet tussen Stuart en Dee Dee Penney, zangeres van de Amerikaanse indieband Dum Dum Girls.
Ik vind dit een verrukkelijk nummer, misschien wel de mooiste van de drie synth-songs en zeker een van de hoogtepunten ook op het laatste album!

Zeker een hoogtepunt! Een erg fijne song met een mooie tekst ook en de zalige stem van Dee Dee! Zeker een van de betere songs van het album!

Put The Book Back On The Shelf (1997)

Hier hebben we een vroege Belle song, namelijk de afsluiter van de 3.. 6.. 9 Seconds of Light EP. En wat voor een song is t! Het start rustig, maar begint heerlijk met die kenmerkende Belle akoestische gitaar. Mooi die viool op de achtergrond, tesamen met die piano en dan vervolgens nog een Felt-like shimmer-y gitaar die een beetje een galmende westernsfeer meegeeft, zalig! Wat missen we dan nog? Juist, het trademark huppelende Belle trompetje en die is hier ook weer aanwezig, simpel maar zalig. Een mooi samenspel tussen de instrumenten sowieso. Mooi ook het samenspel tussen de cello en female vocals verderop, heerlijk gedaan. Een prachtig nummer om vrolijk van te worden
