week 30 van 2020 alweer; Lucy houdt stand maar opvolging lijkt in aantocht, maar wie gaat het doen?
Ook zes binnenkomers en weer uit diverse landen. Griekenland, IJsland, Zwitserland, Australie en dan nog 2x USA.
Irene Skylakaki komt uit Griekenland en ontdekte ik een paar jaar geleden via het steunfonds van Orinoco, soms staat daar wel wat leuks onbekends in. Nu is er een nieuwe single en die klinkt, nog steeds redelijk ingetogen maar wel mooi, op eerste gehoor misschien wel beter dan het nummer waar ik haar mee heb leren kennen. Zeker als in het eind nog even een gitaarlaagje toegevoegd wordt.
Jess Locke stijgt nog met haar vorige, een nummer van een compilatie van Australische artiesten, nu is er ook een echt nieuw nummer met clip. Dat klinkt wat anders dan ik van Jess gewend ben, meer en hardere gitaar waarmee ze richting Juliana Hatfield en Liz Phair gaat. Ook zeker niet verkeerd; enige minpuntje is wel dat haar stem ook regelmatig door de vervormer gaat.
Bully staat ook nog met hun vorige in de lijst maar ook van hun is er alweer een nieuwe en die klinkt eigenlijk bijna hetzelde, grungy gitaren en schuurpapieren stem; ik heb gister hun 2e album nog eens gedraaid en dat was wel weer een opnebaring. Heerlijke band toch, kan bv wolf alice niet tegen aan.
Sophie Hunger, zwitserse zangeres die op haar albums afwisselend engels, duits en frans zingt. De 1e single van haar vorige album vond ik geweldig; het album viel daarna een beetje tegen. De nieuwe single klinkt qua sound wel wat als die genoemde single; wat zal het album gaan doen? Dit is engelse gezongen en klinkt muzikaal behoorlijk opgefokt.
Sharaya Summers doet al een poosje mijnde rgoed bij mij dan met de single waarmee ze in 2018 nog een dikke nummer 2 scoorde (bij mij dan). Eens kijken hoe het de nieuwe vergaat, het klinkt zeker weer vertrouwd en dromerig. Misschien dat toch met de ontdekking van Aimee Steven vorig jaar vergelijkbare zangeressen als Alexandra Saviour en Sharaya Summers daar moeilijk tegen op kunnen.
Mammút uit IJsland ken ik volgens mij via sokra van hun vorige album, na het zien van een KEXP sessie was ik helemaal verkocht. Nu is er een nieuwe single van een komend album en klinkt zoals ik ze ken, spannend en veelbelovend en waarmakend.

Ik heb Care pas gisteren ontdekt, maar ze komt nu al voorzichtig binnen in mijn lijst. Volgende week zit er vast veel meer in.

Verder komen er nog twee vrouwen binnen (Jayda G en Lesley Roy) en het valt me nu pas op dat de vrouwen keihard de dienst uitmaken in mijn Afrekening. Mijn hele podium is zelfs vrouwelijk. - een nieuwe Avalanches, dat brengt bij mij wel wat sensatie teweeg. Hun debuut heeft er 16 jaar over gedaan om uit te groeien tot een 5*-album en in die periode werd het zwak dat ik voor de groep (inmiddels nog maar een duo) steeds groter. Ik weet nog niet helemaal of ik dit nummer nou echt goed vind: het intro beslaat bijna het halve nummer, de sample van Yakelelo voelt wat 'out of place' en wat is eigenlijk de rol van Jamie xx? Maar toch, ondanks dat het wat onwaarschijnlijk voelt, klopt het toch allemaal. De broeierige sfeer, die foute maar gelukzalige zomerhit en de stem van heldin Neneh Cherry, die eigenlijk al sinds Buffalo Stance al niet meer stuk kan. Ben benieuwd waar dit gaat eindigen en of er wellicht nog een album aankomt. Na Subways is er in ieder geval weer nieuw bewijs dat de Avalanches hun magic touch nog niet verloren zijn.
- van Paul Weller verschenen de laatste tijd opvallend veel elektronische deuntjes, die ik eigenlijk nooit echt geslaagd vond. Gelukkig heeft hij zijn leest teruggevonden en horen we weer de traditionele soul/pop/rock waarmee de modfather in de jaren '90 al furore maakte.
- Gesu No Kiwame Otome's もう全部終わりにしよう draaide al even mee in mijn tipparade, haalde het net niet en dat was het dan. Tot het nummer voorbij in het Song van het Jaar topic en ik erachter kwam dat ik het tekort had gedaan. En dus komt de hiphop/progressive zoals ze het zelf noemen als nog binnen.
- Doves' Carousels eigenlijk hetzelfde verhaal: net niet binnen gekomen en dan in de herkansing een maand of 2 later alsnog. In de jaren '00 luisterde ik graag naar Doves (met name het album Some Cities) en dit nummer heeft dezelfde warme, vertrouwde sound als hun oudere werk.
- Mammal Hands is voor mij een nieuwe naam: stuwende, doch toegankelijke jazz met piano en saxofoon.

Daar zijn we weer, dames en heren, met de 30e weekeditie van de MuMeAfrekening. Eind juli, komkommerperiode, vakantietijd. Sommige users genieten van een welverdiende vakantie, al dan niet thuis. Een warm welkom terug ook aan chartsmaster.

In de top van de lijst was het een ware stoelendans. Toen de stofwolken opgetrokken waren, bleek de comebacksingle van de Engelse veteranen van Doves de gelukkige weekwinnaar. De vorige lijstaanvoerder, Phoebe Bridgers, duikelde in één klap van het podium af. Fontaines D.C. zullen nog minstens een week moeten wachten op hun nieuwe machtsgreep, terwijl de tweede dubbelaar onder de artiesten de bronzen plak van deze week pakt.

In de top 10 stijgen verder met stip Future Islands, Spinvis en (vind ik leuk) Jayda G. The Waterboys stonden vorige ten onrechte niet weergegeven in de lijst. Deze week staan ze er wel gewoon in, maar van weeromstuit zijn ze meteen 4 plekken gezakt. Tot slot maar 2 nieuwe binnenkomers, toch komkommertijd?

Nieuwe binnenkomers:

The Waterboys - My Wandering in the Weary Land
The Waterboys hebben best wel wat aardige muziek uitgebracht in de 80's. Daarna zijn ze gestaag doorgegaan en nog steeds leveren ze gemiddeld zo'n eens per 3 jaar een nieuw album af, laatste 5 jaar zelfs 4 stuks. Dat alleen al is bewonderingswaardig.

Over de eerste 4 minuten van My Wonderings in the Weary Land kan ik kort zijn: daar gebeurt helemaal niks noemenswaardigs. Een vrij standaard gitaarriff en de zanger die er wat overheen neuzelt. De laatste 3 minuten wordt het wat interessanter; de kenmerkende e-bow komt om de hoek kijken en er wordt toegewerkt naar een flinke climax aan gitaargeweld. Desondanks klinkt het vooral als iets wat leuk is voor de fans, het triggert mij in ieder geval niet om nog eens een album van ze te gaan luisteren.

Haken - Prosthetic
Oh boy, progmetal, ik word verwend deze week. Haken is dus een Britse progmetalband, die ik wel van naam ken, maar waar ik nog nooit iets eerder van heb gehoord en ook weinig noemenswaardigs over kan melden. Weinig noemenswaardig is ook dit nummer, dus laat ik de 2 positieve dingen benoemen:
1. De lengte is met 5 minuten zeer bescheiden voor een progmetalnummer, chapeau.
2. Dat stukje met de vocoder is wel geinig, sowieso dat er nog iemand een vocoder gebruikt.

Verder is het vooral het instrumentale geposeer en de gitaarmasturbatie die je bij progmetal kan verwachten. De fans zullen het ongetwijfeld diggen, maar als je niet van progmetal houdt, kun je hier beter met een grote boog omheen lopen.

Declan McKenna - Daniel, You're Still a Child
Declan McKenna leerde ik een paar jaar geleden kennen met de frisse popsingles Isombard en Brazil. Helaas heeft hij zich niet echt meer ontwikkeld sinds die tijd. Sterker nog, Daniel, You're Still a Child klinkt voor mij niet meer dan als een brok gezapigheid. Kan echt niks aan dit nummer ontdekken dat mijn aandacht trekt.

Thunder Jackson: beste ontdekking in tijden, tot ik ontdekte dat de zanger van mijn favoriete band (Until The Ribbon Breaks) namelijk lid is van dit project. Dan maakte het natuurlijk wel logisch, want ik had hetzelfde gevoel ongeveer bij de eerste beluisteringen als ik had bij het horen van Until The Ribbon Breaks voor de eerste keer.




Thunder Jackson zorgt dus voor een aardbeving in mijn lijst, tesamen met 2 Nederlandstalige nummers die flink doorstijgen en 2 andere nieuwkomers van vorige week die doorstijgen naar mijn top 10. Alleen de top 3 van vorige week overleeft in mijn top 10. 4 van de langer genoteerde nummers verdwijnen dan weer, ook de rest van lijst ondergaat zo flink wat verschuivingen.

ps: ik wou dat ik Exile kon meenemen in mijn lijst

Het door Don Airey bespeelde Hammond orgel klinkt als een Deep Purple orgel, de vocalen van Ian Gillan zijn nog steeds die vocalen.

Er is evenwel enige bedachtzaamheid ontstaan in de muziek van Deep Purple die vermoedelijk thuis hoort bij een hardrock band op leeftijd.
Wat mag opa nog hardrocken als hij de 70 dik is gepasseerd? Leonard Cohen en Charles Aznavour konden met hun oeuvre nog prima uit de voeten, tot boven de 80 aan toe.

Maar wat kan/mag er nog als je oeuvre spijkerharde rock is geweest, met records in decibellen, en je wilt niet stoppen, waarom zou je ook, en je zit als een ware Peter Pan nog steeds in de business?

Ik denk dat op een gegeven ogenblik het geluidsniveau wordt teruggedraaid naar dat van Nothing at all. Wel nog grappige dingen, song niet slecht maar verre van het overschrijden van de wettelijk voorgeschreven decibellen.
En dan kun je hopen nog lange tijd in goede gezondheid je carrière, onder grote belangstelling en vele aanmoedigingen, voort te zetten.

Daar heeft Steven Wilson allemaal nog geen last van hoewel hij natuurlijk, vergeleken bij de Asylums, inmiddels ook een man op leeftijd begint te worden. 9 jaar geleden maakte hij een prachtige cover van een nummer van de Cardigans, Stoneage Dinosaurs.

Met het overlijden van frontman Tim Smith van de Cardigans, brengt Wilson de song opnieuw uit, als een soort van eerbetoon. Aangezien ik het toen zeker niet in mijn lijst heb geplaatst, kan dat nu gelijk alsnog. Het komt Wilson goed uit. Hij zit op hete kolen om nieuwe songs van zijn laatste album uit te brengen maar heeft dit "on hold" gezet door corona.

Dan is Stoneage dinosaurs natuurlijk een prachtig tussendoortje.

Verder een erg toffe remix van Robyn door Floorplan, de samenwerking tussen technolegende Robert Hood en zijn dochter Lyric Hood. Verder leuke ontdekkingen uit SvhJ: het swingende Keleketla! en de gruizige rock van Gum Country.
