Simon 's Top 20, week 10 [08/03/2020]

Deze week twee nummers in de spotlights. Allereerst de snelste stijger van deze week en door mij genomineerd voor de Song van het Jaar 2020 verkiezing van de komende maand. Stemmen graag




Ook de hoogste binnenkomer hoort uiteraard in de spotlight en laat ik die nu ook genomineerd hebben voor datzelfde topic. Phoebe Bridgers is terug met solowerk. Een beetje vreemd, dat wel, maar oh zo fijn.




Verder komen er nog twee oudgedienden binnen. De nieuwe single van Incubus bevalt steeds beter en komt net als de nieuwe single van Noel Gallagher de lijst binnen. Noel komt weer met een fijn nummer na toch een aantal mindere singles wat mij betreft. The Strokes lossen Pearl Jam af aan kop van mijn lijst en dat lijkt me verre van een slechte beslissing

- U.S. Girls is de laatste jaren toch wel uitgegroeid tot een van mijn favoriete moderne artiesten. 4 American Dollars heeft een lekkere soulvibe met een goede lome beat en fijne koortjes. Naarmate het nummer vordert gebeurt er steeds meer. Kan me voorstellen dat sommige mensen het rommelig vinden, maar ik vind het heerlijk. Doet me trouwens erg aan de Bowie ten tijde van Young American en Station to Station denken, maar de Bowie-invloed van U.S. Girls is me al vaker opgevallen.
- Stephen Malkmus is natuurlijk bekend van Pavement, maar solo doet hij tegenwoordig allerlei andere dingen. Na een elektronisch album gooit hij het nu weer over een andere boeg. Dit klinkt meer als een psychedelische jaren '70 freakout met Indiaase invloeden. Intrigerende tekst ook.
- Prins Thomas' vorige haalde het net niet, ondanks de coole titel. Deze haalt het overtuigend wel, ondanks of misschien wel dankzij de lengte van 12 minuten. Echt een heerlijk groovende plaat, met fijne bassen, bellen en andere percussie.
- Peaking Lights' sound mag na een jaar of 10 wel bekend zijn denk ik. Van de 2 mixes op de single vind ik deze het beste. Lekker lijzig.
- Gorillaz is nogal hit & miss. Het nummer dat nu in de gezamenlijke weeklijst staat heeft het voor mij net niet, maar deze vind ik erg goed. Fatoumata en Damon is ook wel een gouden combinatie.
- Niniola zit eigenlijk wel in dezelfde hoek als Gorillaz, inventieve popmuziek met een Afrikaanse vibe. Niet onlogisch ook als de zoon van Fela Kuti meedoet.

Binnen De Zestien 07/03/2020

Een ongewijzigde top-3, en daar onder ook geen aardverschuivingen. Stippenlift, die wonder boven wonder een steunfondsronde op WOS overleefde, staat nog fier bovenaan. Benedict zit nog op de reservebank, maar loopt eigenlijk al warm, dus ook van mijn kant: bedankt Gretz voor de aanbeveling. The National is niet ver weg, zullen we maar zeggen. Enige nieuwe is van Royksopp, wéér een voltreffer onder de noemer The Lost Tapes.

De een-na-nieuwste single van het Nieuw-Zeelandse Yumi Zouma is het schoolvoorbeeld van (dream)popperfectie en stijgt zo na 4 weken alsnog naar #1. Dromerig, melancholisch en sfeervol tegelijk. Van die hoopgevende muziek die me bij het luisteren altijd een gelukzalig gevoel geeft

Het is weer veel te druk, ik had sommige nummers helemaal nog niet willen laten dalen, maar ja. Zo'n lijst kan natuurlijk ook weer niet in quarantaine, elke week verschijnt er weer nieuw opbeurend werk.

Zoals daar is een single van de band Lemon Twigs. De band van de broers Brian en Michael D'Addario, die zelf alles schrijven, spelen en zingen.
En gewoon van het type vrolijke zomerse retro-achtige rocksong van een interessante struktuur, die meer talent doet vermoeden.

Week 11

- Oh Canada is alweer een lekker folk nummer uit Nieuw-Zeeland. Er moet toch iets speciaals in het water zitten daar. Nadia Reid heeft een prachtige stem en het melodieuze gitaarspel blijft in mijn hoofd rondzingen.
- Space Cadet van beabadoobee al in meerdere lijstjes gezien en nu ben ook ik verkocht. Catchy poprock met een kakofonie aan gitaren.
- Broken Sleep is lekker dromerig en ietwat spacey. Agnes Obel trakteert ons op verfijnd pianospel en lekkere effecten.
- Egyptian Blue komt binnenkort met een nieuwe EP en Never is de eerste single. Weer erg toffe postpunk die lekker schuurt. Klinkt aan de ene kant bekend in de oren, maar ze hebben ook zeker een eigen smoel.

Allereerst mijn excuses voor de late presentatie deze week. Enkele deadlines op werk en een plotselinge lekkage in huis weerhielden mij van de tijd om de presentatie in elkaar te flansen.

Qua lijstaanvoerder laten jullie mij waar ik vorige keer gebleven ben; met Pearl Jam. Over bands gesproken die een drol op een recorder kunnen leggen en hier nog scoren: The Strokes. Met elke nieuwe single van ze verlies ik beetje bij beetje de hoop dat ze ooit nog wat fatsoenlijks uitbrengen, maar ondertussen staan ze hier toch mooi twee keer in de top 6! Voor volgende week dan toch maar weer Billie op 1?

Phoebe Bridgers - Garden Song
We beginnen met een echte MuMe-darling. Phoebe Bridgers is terug met een nieuwe single, later dit jaar volgt ook een opvolger op het succesvolle debuutalbum Stranger in the Alps. We horen dezelfde droeve stemopslag en minimale begeleiding, maar het resultaat mag er zijn. En begint ze nou ook al militant te worden mbt het laten verdwijnen van haar 'skinhead neighbor'? Garden Song heeft wel meer spitsvondige teksten, die het wat mij betreft boven de rest van haar peers doet uitstijgen.

CocoRosie - Restless
CocoRosie jojo't weer terug de lijst in. Tijd geleden dat ik iets van haar heb gehoord. Restless klinkt wat minder fragiel dan dat haar muziek mij bijstond. Hoor ik daar nou een beetje Still D.R.E.-achtige pianosample en zelfs (een soort van) rap? Grappig

Eliza & the Delusionals - Swimming Pool
De tweede nieuwe binnenkomer van deze week is een voor mij compleet onbekende, al heb ik het gevoel dat ik via deze site vaker naar dit soort muziek moet luisteren, dan mij lief is. Is dit niet stiekem gewoon Jade Bird? Ze zet in ieder geval net zo'n scheur op. Kan hier verder weinig mee, sorry.

Gorillaz - Désolé (ft. Fatoumata Diawara)
Zoals ik al beschreef bij mijn eigen lijst, ben ik erg te spreken over de nieuwe worp van dhr. Albarn en zijn vriendjes. Dan kan ook haast niet anders, als je Fatou als gastartieste vraagt. Heerlijk zomers nummer

Khruangbin & Leon Bridges - Texas Sun
Over zomers gesproken: dat is deze Texaanse combo wel. Ik sta er meer van te kijken dat dit nummer weer terug in de lijst komt; volgens mij stamt deze nog uit de tijd dat de natste en warmste winter ooit nog moest beginnen. Iemand een verklaring voor deze re-entry?
