Muzikaal is Changeling een enorm indrukwekkende band, maar ook een beetje een vermoeiende exercitie. De productie vergalt het luistergenot en laat de, toch al niet bepaald gemakkelijke, nogal drukke muziek, als het sonische equivalent van een baksteen in je smoel op je afkomen.
En dat is jammer, omdat de band muzikaal echt wel een interessante vorm van techdeath speelt die wat mij betreft een stuk interessanter is dan wt er gemiddeld in het genre wordt uitgebraakt.

Car Seat Headrest is een van mijn ontdekkingen van 2025. Niet echt een stijl van muziek die ik vaak luister, maar toen ik fragmenten van dit album hoorde was mijn interesse gewekt. The Scholars is een bonte verzameling nummers met het proggy Gethsemane als hoogtepunt. Echt zo’n album waar je je met elke draaibeurt verliest in nieuwe ontdekkingen. En dan heb ik me nog niet eens verdiept in het concept van de plaat.

Helms Deep - Chasing the Dragon (2025) - MusicMeter.nl

Helms Deep speelt 'meat and potatoes' heavy metal, geïnspireerd door de NWOBHM en de US metal scene van de jaren '80 en doen dat vol overgave. Het luisterplezier begint al bij de productie, die een old school vibe geeft en voldoende dynamiek heeft.

Ook de uitvoering is overtuigend. De felle en hoge zang van Alex Sciortino doet bij vlagen aan King Diamond denken, maar dan met de agressie van Jon Oliva. Gitarist Ray DeTone zorgt voor de vlammende leads en de ritmesectie bestaat uit Hal Aponte (Ice Age) en John Gallagher (Raven) vormen de solide ritmesectie.

Origineel? Nee, maar de composities zijn sterk en de heren gaan vuistdiep en over the top terug in de tijd zonder oubollig te klinken. Heerlijke plaat!

Solide.... zo typeerde ik het album al in mijn vorige commentaar. En dat is zoals ik het album blijf beleven, al is beleven misschien niet het juiste woord. Het album glijdt een beetje langs me heen als ik het weer opzet. Het klinkt goed en verzorgd, maar mist karakter....

Op voorhand was ik sceptisch over wat een samenwerking tussen de bassisten Jeroen Paul Thesseling en Steve DiGiorgio. Beide bassisten zijn toppers in het genre, daarover geen twijfel, maar zou een album met twee basgitaren in de hoofdrol niet een beetje teveel van het goede zijn?

Nee dus! De heren blijken uitstekend te kunnen doseren en elkaar aan te vullen in plaats van in de weg te zitten. Daarbij zitten de proggy nummers ook nog eens boordevol lekkere riffs en melodieën en hebben alle instrumenten dankzij de transparante mix van Eve Smith ook nog eens een alle ruimte.

Overigens draait het niet alleen om de basgitaar: Eve Smith - geweldenaar op gitaar - is ook prominent aanwezig en het fantastische dynamische drumwerk van Yuma van Eekelen tilt dit album naar een hoger niveau.

Alison Krauss leerde ik kennen dankzij dit fenomenale album maar haar eigen werk of dat met Union Station had ik tot voor kort niet echt verkend. Tot Arcadia dan. En wat een ontdekking is dat gebleken.

Wat meteen opvalt, is de rust die deze muziek uitstraalt. Hier draait het niet om virtuositeit of technische hoogstandjes, maar om gevoel, om ruimte, om subtiele interactie tussen zang en instrumenten. De band neemt de tijd; alles lijkt langzaam uit te waaieren, zonder haast, zonder overdaad. Het is muziek waarin stilte net zo belangrijk is als klank.
De productie is voorbeeldig — helder, ruimtelijk en warm. Het voelt alsof de band ergens in een houten schuur speelt terwijl het langzaam avond wordt buiten. Krauss’ stem klinkt weer even zuiver en breekbaar als altijd, maar de magie zit hem vooral in hoe Union Station haar aanvult. Mandoline, dobro en fiddle dansen luchtig om haar heen, nergens opdringerig, altijd dienend aan het geheel.

Deze plaat vormt een mooi rustpunt tussen mijn doorgaans wat stevigere luistergewoonten.

Dit album werd me getipt door de eigenaar van mijn vaste platenzaak. Jack The Joker speelt progressieve metal, maar dan in het straatje van Frontiers Records: oftewel veel aandacht voor melodie. De Brazilianen mixen complexe riffs, funky bass en Braziliaanse ritmes als maracatu en forró door hun Haken- en Dream Theater-achtige sound in.

De muziek is erg goed uitgevoerd – drummer Vicente Ferreira en bassist Gustavo Pinheiro stelen vaak de show met hun grooves, en zanger Raphael Joer schakelt soepel tussen clean tenor en growls.
Toch klinkt het geheel een beetje steriel en afstandelijk. Daardoor grijpt het me niet helemaal, al snap ik waarom progmetal-fans dit verslinden.

De kruisvaarders van Wytch Hazel gaan onvermoeibaar door en leveren met V: Lamentations voor de vijfde keer op rij een uitstekend album af. De verrassing van hun formule is er inmiddels wel af, maar de heren leveren elke keer wel weer verdomd catchy nummers af met heerlijk gitaarwerk boordevol melodie. Onderling bieden de nummers de nodige afwisseling in tempo en toonsoort waardoor een goede flow ontstaat. De eerlijke en ambachtelijke productie maakt het geheel extra aangenaam voor het oor.

Trivia Goddess rekende ik aanvankelijk wel tot de grootste teleurstellingen van 2025. Deels door de opgezwollen productie die veel te ‘bassig’ klinkt, maar ook het songmateriaal wist me, op het titelnummer na, niet echt te boeien. Daarmee verdween het album ook vrij snel in de platenkast om daar niet meer uit te komen.

Nu de plaat in de herkansing gaat, ben ik milder gestemd. De plaat opent weliswaar zwak met The Power Of Eve, maar gaandeweg worden de nummers sterker. Het doomy Mét Agwe blijkt zelfs een erg sterk nummer en ook het stevige King Of Damnation scoort inmiddels een stuk beter. De wisselvalligheid speelt het album nog wel parten, evenals de productie, maar er valt best wel wat te genieten op dit album.

The Blue Nowhere blijft een moeilijk album. Op sommige momenten doet het me aan het briljante Empath van Devin Townsend denken, dan weer aan Yes in de tijd met Trevor Rabin of Haken ten tijde van Affinity. Helaas werkt het versnipperde karakter van dit album zich ook regelmatig tegen me en wordt het luisteren van dit album een vermoeiende exercitie. En dat laatste gevoel overheerst wel bij dit album.

Elian Kantor is een populaire leverancier van artwork in de metalscene. Ik denk dat ik alleen dit jaar al vijf 2025-releases heb aangeschaft met zijn artwork. Deze hoes is wat mij betreft de mooiste en dingt mee voor hoes van het jaar. Helaas geldt dat niet voor de muziek die met de hoes gepaard gaat. A Void Within Existance is geen slechte plaat, maar haalt het niet bij het vorige werk van Sorceron. De platgeslagen productie vergalt al een deel van het luisterplezier, maar ook de composities kunnen niet tippen aan die op Walk Beyond The Dark. De nummers zijn ontdaan van franje en blazen voor grote delen eendimensionaal door de speakers. Dat geldt vooral voor de nummers op de A-kant van dit album. Op de drie langere tracks wordt wat meer afwisseling geboden, maar niet voldoende om mij uit te nodigen dit album nog vaak op te leggen. Sterker nog, de volgende keer dat ik deze plaat in mijn handen heb is dat wellicht voor de verkoop.

Akallabêth is het imposante werkstuk van een tweetal Tolkien-fans uit de VS. Het concept van dit album rond de Silmarillion laat me eerlijk gezegd Siberisch koud, maar muzikaal is dit werkstuk echter bijzonder interessant!

Gewapend met een uitgebreide sample-bibliotheek levert het duo een imposant symfonisch blackmetalalbum af. En het moet gezegd dat voor album dat met zoveel digitaal knip en plakwerk in elkaar is gezet, het geheel bijzonder goed klinkt. Waar digitale drums mij doorgaans een doorn in het oor zijn, kan ik er op dit album prima mee leven. De drums zijn knap geprogrammeerd en klinken niet storend. De orkestrale composities zijn ook bijzonder knap gemaakt en klinken overtuigend. Het is wel jammer dat ze de gitaren op dit album volledig overstemmen. Iets meer contrast tussen orkest en gitaar was welkom geweest. Het zijn echter kanttekeningen bij een geweldig album!

Ik ben een laatbloeier als het gaat om Deftones en stapte pas bij Kay No Yokan in. Net als bij alle albums die zij sindsdien uitbrachten (ik ben nog niet in hun vroegere discografie gedoken) duurde het even voordat Private Music bij mij tractie kreeg. Dit album heeft een heerlijke flow en daarin zit de kracht van de plaat, maar gelijkertijd heeft het geen echte uitschieter die me bij blijven.

Dit keer een iets ingetogener geluid van Psychonaut. Mooi om te horen dat de band hun geluid blijft ontwikkelen en daardoor interessant blijft. Deze ontwikkeling zorgt dat dit album ook wat meer tijd nodig heeft om op waarde te schatten. Vooralsnog plaats ik deze nog niet op het niveau van de eerste twee platen van de band. Wellicht dat ik daar nog op terug kom.....

Gazpacho stond al even niet meer op mijn menu. Ik heb Fireworker en Soyuz wel geproefd, maar werd maar matig enthousiast van die albums. Van Magic 8-ball daarentegen wel! Niet dat dit album nu zo enorm afwijkt van het beproefde recept, maar op een of andere manier is het gelijk 'aan' na de eerste luisterbeurt van dit album. Een belangrijke factor daarin is de ruimtelijke productie, die je doet beleven alsof je tussen de muzikanten op het podium staat.

Een uur kroop zelden zo traag voort, terwijl het zo snel voorbij vloog! Het twee deel van Stygian Bough is minstens zo sterk als de eersteling, maar misschien nog wel beter. De nummers zitten iets concreter in elkaar en voor Bell Witch-begrippen wordt er wat meer doorgepakt in de arrangementen van de nummers, waardoor de nummers beter beklijven. Fijne plaat!

Spock's Beard - The Archaeoptimist (2025) - MusicMeter.nl

De veerkracht die Spock’s Beard ten toon spreidt is bewonderenswaardig. Natuurlijk was er na Snow het vertrek van bandleider Neal Morse, waarna de band met Nick D'Virgilio op zang en geholpen door Joe Boegehold, die gaandeweg een grotere rol als schrijver op zich nam in de band, verder ging. Dat leverde een aantal aardige albums op. Met de komst van Ted Leonard en Jimmy Keegan begon de output van de band echt weer interessant te worden, tot het teleurstellende Noise Floor. Daarna werd het rustig rond de band en begonnen een aantal bandleden met Joe Boegehold de spin-off Pattern Seeking Animals.

Na zeven jaar heeft Ryo Okumoto, samen met Michael Whiteman (met wie hij ook zijn laatste solo-album schreef), de handschoen opgepakt en zes nieuwe nummers geschreven voor Spock’s Beard. De kern van de band bestaat, naast Ryo, nog steeds uit Alan Morse en Dave Meros met Ted Leonard op zang. Op de drums vinden we de - voor mij - onbekende Nick Potters.

Hij blijkt een fenomenale drummer te zijn en geeft op het openingsnummer gelijk zijn visitekaartje af. Wat een heerlijke groove en dynamiek! Een verademing na de toch wat meer rock-georienteerde stijl van Jimmy Keegan. Wat dat betreft sluit zijn stijl toch wat meer aan bij die van D’Virgillio.

De nummers zitten stuk voor stuk ook sterk in elkaar en laten de kenmerkende speelse stijl van de band en hun muzikanten weer ouderwets horen. Invisible is een geweldige rocker, Afourthoughts is sterke aanvulling in de ‘Thoughs’-suite en met het titelnummer staat er ook een sterke epic op dit album.

De productie van het album is in handen van Rich Mouser, die het album van een geweldig geluid voorziet. The Archaeoptimist een verrassend sterk album na het teleurstellende Noise Floor en laat horen dat de band nog springlevend is!

Tja, komt tijd komt raad... of zoiets. Inmiddels is het kwartje keihard gevallen. Wat een geweldig album is dit! Factoren die me eerder stoorden, blijken nu geen enkel probleem. The Shores... is een geweldig sfeervol en afwisselen album waarop de band de kunst laat horen van het schrijven van nummers met kop en kont, zonder de connectie met hun progressieve roots te verliezen.

Deze neemt voorlopig de toppositie op mijn jaarlijst in!

Ik heb Borderland best veel gedraaid sinds de release, maar moet bekennen dat de verveling een beetje begint toe te slaan bij dit album. De nummers volgens vrij recht-toe-recht-aan popsongstructuren, waardoor mijn aandacht op een gegeven moment verslapt.

Wayhome is een bijzonder mooi en sfeervol album geworden. Vooralsnog kan het me nog niet zo aangrijpen als het fantastische Ice Fleet, maar dat kan nog komen naarmate ik meer tijd met deze plaat heb doorgebracht. Ik ben erg benieuwd hoe de CD en de lossless bestanden klinken. De LP die hier draait klinkt naar mijn smaak wel erg wollig. Ayreonfreak beschrijft in zijn mooie review het ruimtelijke geluid van de drums, maar daar is op mijn LP weinig van te horen.

Vooralsnog een solide 4 sterren: 80/100
