Silent Running is wel erg duidelijk door Joy Division (Closer) geïnspireerd, maar erg mooi gedaan.

De binnenhoes van mijn lp (haal die uit de buitenhoes en de gaten worden beige) vermeldt alle gebruikte instrumenten, dus ook synths en daarbij staan oa. Prophet 5, Solina en Oberheim OBX - in the romance meen ik de klank van de Solina en Prophet5 te herkennen. Het grappige is dat die 'warme'geluiden van die analoge synthesizers tegenwoordig via softwarematige emulatie in digitale synthesizers opnieuw kunnen worden gemaakt (een band als Little Boots doet het dan wel weer met authentieke synths).

Erg grappig inderdaad.

Wat moet ik dan zeggen - bijzonder? De crux zit 'em gewoon hierin dat het normaal gesproken bon ton is om af te geven op het verleden en oudere instrumenten, terwijl dus in het geval van synthesizers het warmere geluid van oudere synthesizers (daar gaat het in concreto om) meer wordt gewaardeerd tegenwoordig. Dat kun je op twee manieren bereiken: met oude synthesizers die je dan goed moet onderhouden, en accepteren dat ze af en toe falen) of je doet het software-matig. Ik vond dat op zich een bijzonder verschijnsel.

Zeer goed album!

Ik nam gewoon even een loopje met je. Lastig serieus blijven soms met K3 op.

Beide nummers zijn gewoon opnieuw geproducet door Rhett Davis,
de man achter het geluid van Roxy Music en Bryan Ferry notabene.

The Romance of the Telescope was nog niet klaar, toen Virgin
de band pushte om het toch als b-kant van Joan Of Arc te releasen.
Die versie is dan ook bekend als "unfinished".

Of All the Things We've Made is het laatste nummer
uit de A&M sessies van OMD ... Het album zelf was al uit
en het nummer verscheen daarom als 12" b-kant van Maid Of Orleans.
De gedachte was dat het om hun allerlaatste song ooit zou gaan.

OMD was moe van het avontuur waarin het werd meegesleept.
Nooit sterambities gehad. En nu was het welletjes geweest.

In 1981 verscheen een interview met Paul Humphreys in Oor
waarin heel goed die twijfelende fase van de band is terug te vinden.
"Misschien is onze muziek wel totaal irrelevant," zucht Paul.

Andy McCluskey probeerde daar met Dazzle Ships wat aan te doen.
Een politieke plaat die de koud oorlog en de oprukkende technologie
in een concept wilde vatten, maar daar niet echt in slaagde.
Wat overblijft is een sfeervol tijdsdocument, dat wel.

En een groep die na het commerciële succes van hun voorganger
nog één keer volledig haar eigen zin durfde doen met een neerwaartse
verkoopcurve tot gevolg. En de ontnuchterende vaststelling dat OMD
uiteindelijk gewoon deel uit maakt van de wegwerpcultuur.

Terecht een prima song. Hetzelfde geldt voor This Is Helena.

Zeer swingend album.
Hou ik net iets meer van dan van de twee eerste albums.
Met een flinke scheut Tom Tom Club tussen de tandwielen.

Dit was de 'Wiedergutmachungschallplatte" van David Byrne met The Talking Heads. Na Remain in Light (waarvoor een aantal sessiemuzikanten was ingehuurd) was ie lichtelijk afgedreven van de band door zijn project met Eno (My Life in...) en de band stond min of meer op springen.

Common sense bracht Byrne ("not a very likeable person" - Tina Weymouth) en de rest van de band weer bijeen. En dit album, niet zo broeierig als het voorgaande, is i.t.t. tot wat werd gevreesd een goed album. Een beter album werd hierna niet meer gemaakt, ook niet het veel geroemde Stop Making Sense.
