1. Eminem - Lose Yourself

Wat mij betreft zijn beste. Eminem klinkt heerlijk boos en opgefokt. Helaas lopen herhaaldelijke nominatie mijnerzijds voor de ladder steeds op niets uit. Dit is toch een van de absolute klassiekers van de 21ste eeuw, mensen? Nou ja, hier staat hij op 1 van de 25.

2. Bill Withers - Lean on Me

Nummer dat ik al lang ken, me nooit echt opvalt, dat ik ook nooit uit mezelf op zet. En waarin eigenlijk niet zo veel gebeurt. Maar sommige muziek glijdt warm en gemoedelijk voorbij zonder dat je er al te veel acht op slaat. Totdat je het wat bewuster luistert en denkt: 'jeetje, wat een goed nummer is dit eigenlijk!'.

3. Digital Emotion - Go Go Yellow Screen

Met dit nummer ben ik dus de hele avond bezig geweest. Het was me niet onbekend, maar ik wist niet dat het uit Nederland kwam. Toen ging ik googlen en viel me vooral het volstrekt ontbreken van enige informatie op het internet op. Op een gegeven moment begon ik beroepsmatig zelfs een schitterend verhaal in de krant over een vergeten klassieker van eigen bodem te zien. Via vele omzwervingen kwam ik er uiteindelijk op uit dat dit een van 872 zijprojecten is van Cat Music, een productiebedrijf (voortgekomen uit de band Catapult) dat ongeveer alle muziek schrijft die je niet wil horen. Of soms ook wel wilt horen. Want dit is eigenlijk best een baanbrekend Italonummer. Om niet te zeggen dat het hele idee van Aqua wel eens hierop gebaseerd zou kunnen zijn.

4. Curved Air - Back Street Luv

Schijnt een progrockgezelschap te zijn, maar dat hoor ik hier niet aan af. Dit nummer doet me vooral sterk denken aan de psychedelische klanken van Jefferson Airplane. Bovendien heeft het zelfs iets newwaverigs over zich. Vrouwen in dit soort genres geven trouwens altijd wel wat extra's.

5. Billy Idol - White Wedding

De door mij op handen gedragen Associates gaan het lijstje niet eens halen dankzij een concurrent uit eigen tijd. Zo'n 'hey little sister' af en toe en dat heldere gitaartje zijn toch een lust voor het oor.

1. Placebo - Pure Morning

Without You I'm Nothing is de enige plaat van Placebo die ik echt de moeite waard vind. Dat komt natuurlijk mede door de ideale opener. Het intro is een grote adrenalinestoot. Het nummer komt me wat industriëler voor dan de rest van het bandoeuvre. Daarmee geen typisch Placebonummer, maar wel hun beste.

2. The Wedding Present - Interstate 5

Kijk, dat is dan weer een leuke verrassing. Ik was in de veronderstelling dat het begin jaren negentig wel zo'n beetje gedaan was met The Wedding Present, maar ze blijken ook deze eeuw nog prachtige muziek op plaat te hebben gezet. Deze single uit 2004 klinkt wat minder springerig dan het bekende werk, maar wel een fijne gitaarmuur op een wat lager tempo.

3. New Radicals - You Get What You Give

Een nummer dat werkelijk totaal grijs werd gedraaid toen ik in 1999 een klein Lukasje was. Het is dan ook zo'n beetje de ultieme radiohit voor al uw arbeidsvitamineuurtjes. Ik was hem destijds helemaal beu gehoord, maar de tijd heelt dat. Tegenwoordig zet ik dit best wel weer eens op. En het blijft een geweldige meezinger.

4. The Associates - Club Country

Een nummer (lang niet het beste nummer overigens) van een van mijn favoriete platen aller tijden. Sulk is zo'n beetje de soundtrack van een manische depressie. Sommigen zal het tenenkrommend irritant en dramatisch in de oren klinken. Maar ik hou hiervan.

5. Tracy Chapman - Baby Can I Hold You

Net als iedereen kende ik eerst Fast Car. En net als iedereen dacht ik eerst dat dit door een man gezongen werd. En net als bijna iedereen vind ik het ook best goed. Niet baanbrekend of revolutionair, maar gewoon degelijke popmuziek. Baby Can I Hold You vind ik melodieus nog iets mooier dan Fast Car.

Ik kwam er trouwens vandaag pas achter dat hij ook op MuMe staat! Verder een fantastische single van Delta 5, ongetwijfeld al eens gehoord, maar was me er verder nooit bewust van. Ook mooie ontdekkingen van My Morning Jacket, Built To Spill, Scars en Small Faces.

4,00*: Zwaar op de hand deze muziek, maar als je er voor in de stemming bent is er weinig beters. Wat een stem.

3,25*: Aardig soulnummer, maar na 2 keer luisteren weet ik het wel.

4,00*: Van Bauhaus kende ik tot nog toe slechts twee nummers, maar deze vind ik een stuk leuker dan dat tweetal. Fijne spookhuizenmuziek. Ontdekking!

3,25*: Lange souljam. Klinkt niet onprettig, maar wel een beetje achtergrondmuziek doordat de zang ontbreekt.

4490. Smog - Cold Blooded Old Times (1999)
4,00*: Ik verwachtte traag en deprimerend, maar kreeg uptempo en enigszins opgewekt (al viel dat tekstueel wel mee). Leuke ontdekking, eigenlijk zou ik eens wat vaker naar Bill Callahan moeten luisteren.

4489. Blue Öyster Cult - Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll (1972)
3,25*: Wie iets met begin jaren '70 bluesrock heeft moet dit zeker beluisteren. Voor mij volstond 2 keer wel.

3,75*: Prima discoplaat waarop het moeilijk stilzitten is, maar haar soulsingels uit de 60s spreken me meer aan.

4487. Crystal Castles - Celestica (2010)
4,50*: Ja, dit is lekker. Ik ken CC al vanaf het begin, maar dit nummer kwam nooit zo aan. Nu wel, heel fijn nummer. Al komt het niet in de buurt van Not In Love, maar dat is voor mij eigenlijk wel top 100 materiaal (en bij RYM staat die ook zowat in de top 1000 zie ik).

4486. Roxy Music - Dance Away (1979)
3,50*: Uit hun gladdere periode. Heb wel een zwak voor Roxy Music, maar ze hebben veel beter werk in deze stijl.

4485. Thomas Leer - Private Plane (1978)
4,25*: Mooie primitieve synthpop. Ingetogen liedje dat her en der prettig knarst en piept. Ontdekking!

4484. David Bowie - It's No Game (Part 1) (1980)
3,75*: Scary Monsters is het Bowie-album dat maar niet echt aanslaat bij mij. Evenzo voor dit nummer: leuk, maar zeker niet magisch.

3,75: Dit klinkt als 80% Burial en 20% Four Tet. Melancholisch plaatje, maar ik heb beter gehoord van deze grootmeester(s).

4482. Bloc Party - So Here We Are (2005)
4,25*: Inmiddels vergane glorie, maar in 2005 was dit voor mij top 10-materiaal. Silent Alarm was mijn meest gedraaide album van dat jaar en dit blijft ook gewoon een mooi onbevangen liedje.

4481. The Prodigy - Voodoo People (1994)
4,50*: Dit moet ik honderden keren gehoord hebben en de sleet zit er eigenlijk niet echt op. Blijft een vette plaat, zoals alles van The Prodigy toen.

4480. Talk Talk - I Don't Believe in You (1986)
3,25*: Van Talk Talk ben ik nooit zo idolaat geweest. De stem van Mark Hollis staat me vaak toch een beetje tegen wegens te theatraal/pathetisch. Sommige nummers zijn wel mooi, maar dit vind ik een middenmotor.

4479. Whipping Boy - When We Were Young (1996)
3,50*: Leuk plaatje, erg in dezelfde stijl als de eerdere single die hier van hen langskwam. Nu vond ik die wel net wat beter.

4478. Pink Floyd - On the Turning Away (1987)
2,00*: Hier had PF er beter mee op kunnen houden. Eigenlijk gewoon vervelende muziek dit, ik zit de 6 minuten met tegenzin uit.

4477. The Lovin' Spoonful - Darling Be Home Soon (1967)
3,00*: Dit trok een aantal keer aan me voorbij voor ik er erg in had. Kan er weinig zinnigs over zeggen.

4476. Loreena McKennitt - The Mummers' Dance (1998)
4,00*: Ierse volksmuziek waar ik wel rustig van word. Mooi dit. Ook dit liedje van Loreena gaat op de favorieten-lijst.

Nummers 3.550 - 3.526:

1. The Auteurs - Showgirl

Vaak wat vergeten britpopband, maar dan toch zeker niet door mij. Ze zijn een beetje aan de indie/janglepopkant van het spectrum te plaatsen; The Smiths zijn niet ver weg, maar toch ook weer wel. Want The Auteurs hebben toch ook een uit duizenden herkenbaar eigen geluid. Hoe het ook zij, de eerste twee albums van dit gezelschap zijn allebei zeer de moeite. Met deze single als een van de hoogtepunten op het debuut New Wave.

2. Manic Street Preachers - Everything Must Go

We blijven in de britpop, waarmee maar weer eens bewezen is dat dat ook maar een rare verzamelnaam is voor Britse dingen die destijds in zwang waren. De Preachers neigen veel meer naar hardrock en zo'n pompeuze productie met violen en dergelijke is bij The Auteurs ook al ondenkbaar. Ze hebben nog een paar betere wat mij betreft (The Everlasting, Motorcycle Emptiness), maar ook deze misstaat niet in lijstjes.

3. Phosphorescent - Song for Zula

Zo'n nummer waarvan het bij eerste beluistering al lijkt of je het jaren kent. Dat is niet altijd een voordeel; net als bij bijvoorbeeld de plaat van The War on Drugs klinkt dit op het eerste gehoor erg fijn. Maar er valt ook weinig te ontdekken, te vaak draaien werkt wat averechts. Toch mag dit wel een moderne klassieker heten.

4. The Police - Walking on the Moon

The Police zal niet heel vaak de top 5 halen; ik vind het een aardig bandje, maar toch nooit heel bijzonder. In hun oeuvre is dit toch wel redelijk duidelijk mijn favoriet. De traagheid van het nummer en de lenigheid van Stings stem vallen vooral bij het invallen van de zang heerlijk samen.

5. The Small Faces - My Mind's Eye

De enige van dit rijtje die ik nog niet kende. Lekker vrolijke jarenzestigpop. Opmerkelijk is wel dat ik door de wat simpele en steeds terugkerende zanglijn steeds in kerststemming kom. Gloria in excelsis deo.

Hier gaan we waarschijnlijk voor het eerst dezelfde nummer 1 hebben.
Geweldige single inderdaad, een van mijn favorieten uit de 90s.

1. The Bucketheads - The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind)

Oh ja, die! Toch best vaak gehoord in mijn leven, maar nooit geweten wie, hoe en waarom. Daar heb ik dus 27 voor moeten worden. Fantastisch dancenummer, en dat zinnetje is een echte oorwurm.

2. Richard Hawley - The Oceans

Lijkt me een typische aERo-artiest. Zo'n theatraal aangezette singer-songwriterballad, maar dan gelukkig niet met zo'n Antony waar ik spontaan bultjes van krijg. Richard Hawley zingt eerder met de diepe stem van (de latere) Cohen, en als het gitaartje erin komt na zo'n 3 minuut 20 weet je definitief dat het goed zit.

3. Serge Gainsbourg - Sex Shop

Vaak word ik een beetje moe van het gesteun van deze Fransman. Maar ondanks de wat dat betreft weinig veelbelovende titel wint het prachtige arrangement het hier van dat soort irritaties. Ik geraak zelfs een beetje in kerststemming.

4. George Baker Selection - Little Green Bag

Jawel, deze klassieker van eigen bodem krijgt op RYM ook de nodige internationale erkenning. Terecht, want waar we er hier nog wel eens lacherig over doen, is dit toch wel een monument. Heerlijke bas, het swingt de pan uit. In de tussentijd is dit zelfs naar de bovenste 2.500 van de RYM-lijst gestegen. En aldus met afstand het best geratete nummer in het genre 'palingsound'.

5. Erasure - Always

Het is toch al een lijstje nummers die op de rand van tenenkrommend balanceren, dus dan kan deze er ook wel bij. De smaakvolle syntharrangementen zorgen er knap voor dat de over-de-top-zang niet helemaal uit de bocht vliegt. Heerlijke melodie ook.

Hier ga ik me ook eens op smijten denk ik, aangezien ik ook eerder iemand ben van losse nummers ipv albums is dit dé ideale weg voor mij om nieuwe muziek en vergeten pareltjes te ontdekken gok ik

Mooi dat The Psychedelic Furs bovenaan komen, toch een wat onderschat bandje (ook bij mij). Een echt goed album van ze heb ik nooit kunnen vinden, maar de singles smaken me altijd goed.en dit vind ik een van hun beste singles, hoewel ze nog betere hebben. NEU! is de grote verrassing. Ik dacht dat ik hun beste werk wel kende met de debuutplaat, maar Isi is zeker zo goed als Hallogallo. Over een week zou het nummer 1 kunnen staan, want ik neig naar 4,5. De single van Sparks is ook een leuke ontdekking. Ik moet ook eens achter dat Nr 1 in Heaven-album aan, want de andere single van dat album was ook al zo goed.

Mooie ontdekking inderdaad, dat Slapp Happy! Ook nu komt een (half) Duits gezelschap bijna vanuit het niets op 1, maar het door mij geliefde Eighties Fan van Camera Obscura wint het nog nipt. Maar wat een geweldig nummer is Casablanca Moon, een short story op muziek, in 170 seconden! Fijne stem heeft die dame ook.
Verder mooie powerpop-ontdekkingen in The Plimsouls en Flamin' Groovies, die dus nog een klassiekertje hebben naast Shake Some Action.

Leuk rijtje dit weer.

1. Fad Gadget - Life on the Line

Deze man draag ik op handen. Zijn onheilspellende, industriële synthpop vormde een grote inspiratiebron voor Depeche Mode. Fad Gadget klinkt zelf wat ondergrondser, maar toch ook vaak verrassend catchy. Zoals hier, want dit is misschien wel zijn ultieme popnummer. Dit zou ik graag nog eens live zien. Maar helaas. Frank Tovey is niet meer.

2. Gravediggaz - Diary of a Madman

Een nummer uit de categorie 'ooit wel eens gehoord, nooit acht op geslagen'. Maar wat is dit een moorddadig goed stukje psychopatenhiphop. Lekkere beat, en die rechtbanksetting is ook een vondst op zich.

3. DAF - Der Mussolini

Minstens zo dansbaar als het werk van Fad Gadget, waarmee dit eigenlijk best aardig te vergelijken is. Voor mij wel de ultieme NDW-klassieker.

4. Pylon - Cool

Er komt wel een flinke reeks new wave/postpunkfavjes voorbij hier. Want ook Pylon behoort daar toe. Een lekker hoekig klinkend bandje met fijne vrouwenzang die soms best wat doet denken aan de door Kim Gordon gezongen Sonic Youthnummers. Pylon komt trouwens net als REM uit het provinciestadje Athens, dat ooit ook het mijns inziens beste Pylon-nummer 'Crazy' coverde. Deze is ook Cool, trouwens.

5. Josef K - Sorry for Laughing

En nog zo eentje uit die tijd. Uit de categorie repetitieve popmuziek met dissonante akkoorden en een overmatig aanwezige bas. Ik hou ervan.

Orbital - Halcyon is niet hetzelfde nummer als Halcyon And On And On zeker? Anders kan ik niet begrijpen dat die je top 5'je niet gehaald heeft! Hemels nummer!

Vanaf nu ga ik voor een iets minder arbeidsintensieve methode, alle nummers bespreken - hoe kort ook - is toch wel een gedoetje. Per 25 pik er sowieso de 5 leukste en eventueel wat ontdekkingen als ze tenminste 4* uit.

01. Henry Mancini - Peter Gunn heb ik leren kennen via de beroemde mixcd van 2 Many DJ's. Dat intro is eigenlijk gewoon een van de beste uit de popgeschiedenis en draagt het hele nummer.

02. R.E.M. - Bang and Blame komt van het album Monster, waarop de heren uit Athens, Georgia een wat steviger gitaargeluid lieten horen dan men van hen gewend was. Heb altijd wel een zwak gehad voor deze plaat en wat mij betreft is Bang and Blame er een van de beste nummers op. Lekker grungy, sfeervol nummer met een lekkere tremolo-sound. Een stuk beter dan de leadsingle What's The Frequency, Kenneth?, die desondanks wel wat hoger in deze lijst staat.

03. Cyndi Lauper - When You Were Mine heb ik vast wel eens gehoord ooit, ergens, maar nu dan pas voor het eerst bewust beluisterd. Ik vind dit heerlijke jaren '80 pop, enigszins in het hoekje van Stevie Nicks, Irene Cara, etc. Ontdekking!

04. The Chiffons - He's So Fine is waarschijnlijk vooral bekend via George Harrison. Deze leende flink uit dit nummer voor zijn grote hit My Sweet Lord. Dat vind ik ook een geweldig nummer, maar deze mag er ook zijn. Geweldige single uit de hoogtijdagen van de girl group pop.

05. The Joy Formidable - Whirring klinkt in de eerste minuten als de zoveelste doordeweekse alternatieve gitaarplaat, maar dan gebeurt er iets speciaals. Heeft Peter Gunn een van de beste intro's van de complete popgeschiedenis, dan heeft Whirring een van de fijnste outro's van de jaren '00.

Cocteau Twins' I Wear Your Ring ging ik na drie keer luisteren wel iets meer waarderen. Ben al wel bekend met al hun werk t/m Treasure, daarna haak ik een beetje af. Dit is dan toch wel weer een kleine ontdekking.

1. The Cure - Why Can't I Be You? (1987) 8,5
Hier word ik nog steeds onwijs vrolijk van. Weet dat het niet een populaire mening hier is, maar voor mij is The Cure vooral een singleband en dan het liefst zo poppy mogelijk (Lullaby, Just Like Heaven, Close to Me en ja ook deze)

2. 2Pac - Life Goes On (1996) 8,5
Deze kende ik niet, maar wat flowt dit lekker. Zal toch maar eens wat meer van 2Pac checken dan het album Until the End of Time dat ik kreeg voor m'n verjaardag toen ie uitkwam (vraag me af of ik die nummers nog zal herkennen als ik ze hoor).

3. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Jubilee Street (2013) 8,5
Een van de mooiste nummers van vorig jaar. Onwijs krachtig tegen het einde aan. Moest het concert op Lowlands jammer genoeg missen voor The Knife en Goat, maar hopelijk krijg 'm ooit nog te zien (hoor altijd dat het live erg bijzonder is).

4. Depeche Mode - Love in Itself (1983) 8,5
Net als bij The Cure had ik rond m'n 15de een Depeche Modeperiode waar vooral de singles het goed deden. Deze jammer genoeg destijds gemist, maar zal er vanaf nu denk ik wel veel plezier aan beleven, lekker pakkend nummer.

5. R.E.M. - Wendell Gee (1985) 8,0
Afsluiter van een prachtig album. Hoor dit nummer dan ook vooral in die context.

6. Fiona Apple - Criminal (1997) 8,0
Nog een iPodklassiekertje uit mijn puberjaren. Nog steeds een onwijs cool nummer met een prachtig outro.

7. Whipping Boy - We Don't Need Nobody Else (1995) 8,0
Eigenlijk een 8,5, maar toen sloeg ie z'n vriendin omdat ze seks met 'm wilde.

8. Depeche Mode - Useless (1997) 8,0
Jaren 90 Depeche Mode klinkt altijd zo heerlijk mysterieus. Alle singles uit deze tijd doen het goed bij mij. Dit nummer doet mij eigenlijk aan Garbage denken.

9. ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Relative Ways (2001) 7,5
Een nummer dat me net niet helemaal pakt, van een album dat me net niet helemaal pakt, terwijl dit wel heel erg in mijn straatje ligt. Another Morning Stoner en How Near How Far zouden hoger krijgen. Desalniettemin een erg goed, vermakelijk nummer.

10. Digital Underground - The Humpty Dance (1989) 7,5
Lekker vrolijk nummer, dat sterk doet denken aan Do the Bartman. En dat is eigenlijk iets positiefs.

Er zijn sterkere rijtjes geweest.

Ik was niet van plan je in te halen, Lukas (eerder bij te halen), maar toch fijn dat je weer wat van de lijst gepost hebt. Er staat weer veel mooi spul tussen, dus ik verheug me al op de volgende lijstjes.
Misschien had ik toch op 5000 moeten beginnen, maar ik wist niet dat dit me zo goed zou bevallen. En via de lijstjes van Silent_shout, Herman en Dwejkk (en door terug te lezen) krijg ik de krenten uit de pap van 5000-4001 ook wel mee. Misschien kom ik nog met een totaallijst over die posities.

1. Elastica - Stutter (1993) 4,5*
Heb altijd wel een zwak gehad voor de debuutplaat van Elastica. Destijds erg aantrekkelijke zangeres ook met Justine Frischmann, vond haar altijd wel iets hebben. Destijds vooral bekend omdat ze Wire hebben geplagieerd, maar wat mij betreft doet het debuut van Elastica niet onder voor dat van Wire en vice versa.

2. The MFA - The Difference It Makes (2004) 4,5*
Fijne houseklassieker uit de Border Community stal.

3. Beach House - Zebra (2010) 4,5*
Dit kunnen we een ontdekking noemen. Destijds meerdere keren de plaat van Beach House gedraaid, maar het greep me nooit echt. Nu wel. Erg mooi nummer dat domweg de x-factor heeft. Sinds ik het heb ontdekt is het hier wel vaker langsgekomen en bij schrijven zorgt het ook wel weer voor een brokje in mijn keel.

4. Elvis Costello - Veronica (1989) 4,25*
Van deze Elvis ken ik eigenlijk alleen wat singles, waarvan dit toch ook wel weer een hele leuke is.

5. Annie Lennox - Why (1992) 4,25*
Een top 40-hit uit de periode dat ik daar nog elke week voor klaar ging zitten. Somber en ingetogen nummer, maar wel erg mooi. Lennox heeft ook een fraaie stem.

The Pleasure Seekers - Never Thought You'd Leave Me (1965) 4*
Dit is wel een toffe ontdekking. Mooie mix tussen surfmuziek en bubblegum pop. Staat op Spotify op een garage-rock-verzamelaar. Blijkbaar is dit met Suzi Quatro, zo'n beroemde naam waarvan ik geen idee heb waarom ze eigenlijk beroemd is.
