L29. Het oeuvre van Bill Withers is ijzersterk en daar zijn deze nummers maar weer eens het voorbeeld van. Ik moet zeggen dat dit nummer van Gwen mij ook steeds meer is gaan bevallen. Ik heb mij nog niet verdiept in haar werk dus dat moet ik snel eens doen. Solomon is wederom verdienstelijk maar zal het denk ik niet redden.

L30. Ik heb een zwak voor sociaal-maatschappelijk soulwerk. De sfeer op Prison Song is haast beklemmend - en dat maakt dit nummer nu net zo mooi. Iets heel anders maar niet per se minder mooi is de ballade van D'Angelo. Ik ben geen groot fan van hem, maar dit nummer vind ik wel wonderschoon. De funkklassieker van Charles blijft leuk. Het nummer van Geater is ook aardig al blijf ik de subtiliteit in zijn stem missen.

De K.O. laat ik even voor wat het is omdat het me echt niets uitmaakt wie er door mag, ik vind ze beide leuk en bovenal lastig te vergelijken.

L29: Bill is fantastisch, een van mijn drie favoriete soulartiesten. Wie dan mijn favoriet is? Otis! Die hier met Carla Thomas een heerlijke uitvoering van Tramp brengt. Achter deze drie toppers de prima Solomon Burke die pech heeft dat ik de top drie net iets hoger aansla.

L33: Off the Wall is niet mijn favoriete Michael Jackson nummer (dat zijn Dirty Diana en Billie Jean) maar het is wel Michaels ultieme soulnummer. Hoe goed de muziek die hij erna maakte ook is, zo soulvol als op het gelijknamige album werd het nooit meer. Marvin Gaye krijgt nipt de voorkeur boven Willie Wright. Deze Nick Drake van de soul kende ik voorafgaand aan deze editie nog niet zo goed maar zijn muziek bevalt me zeker. Wat me echter vandaag opviel is dat je de nummers niet te vaak moet horen want een overkill ligt op de loer. Vandaar ook dat Marvin toch net de tweede plek inpikt. Darrell en Ann zijn degelijk en datzelfde kan eigenlijk gezegd worden van Lee Fields maar dat nummer pakt me niet.

L34: Van de grote soulartiesten ligt James Brown mij misschien wel het minste. De funk kant die zijn nummers vaak opgaan is niet zo aan mij besteed. Maar, als hij bij de pure soul blijft zoals hij doet in dit nummer, dan is het ongeëvenaard. Ik vind dit denk ik zijn beste liedje. Daarachter wordt het steeds een klein beetje minder, geen hoogstaande ladder.
