Mijn top 3 is wel duidelijk, de overige zeven plekken zullen dicht bij elkaar liggen. Morgen maar wat extra veel Billie Holiday luisteren om ze te kunnen rangschikken.

Gloomy Sunday wordt genoemd als opvallende afvaller, maar dat Trav'lin Light weggestemd is, vind ik nog veel verrassender (en onbegrijpelijker ). Gelukkig nog zat moois over.

Ik zit nu met dertien ernstige kandidaten voor m'n top 10. De volgorde, daar ben ik nog lang niet uit. In elk geval gaat dat herbeluisteren niet gauw vervelen.

Tja zo zie ik hem ook in de spotifylijst voorbij komen maar dit "lied" heet toch; I love you, Porgy naar de Porgy and Bess aria?

Ik weet dat het nummer bij Nina Simone I Loves You, Porgy heet. Even checken: inderdaad dat gaat ook op voor Billie Holiday Superbitch. Heeft die Rudi S toch mooi gezien!

Het zal een lastige opdracht worden, maar wel fijn voor de oren. Voor mij liggen al die nummers namelijk heel dicht bij elkaar. Geen uitgesproken favorieten enerzijds, geen enkel nummer dat minder is anderzijds. Zélf benieuwd wat het zal zijn.

In Porgy and Bess zingt Porgy: Bess, You Is My Woman Now. Later antwoordt Bess: I Loves You, Porgy. Die grammaticale fouten waren bedoeld om het Afro-Amerikaanse taalgebruik weer te geven, maar dat werd door sommigen als stigmatiserend ervaren.

Billie Holiday zingt duidelijk: "I love you, Porgy" - zonder -s. De singleversie van 1949 draagt de korte titel Porgy, als B-kant van My Man. Alleen op verzamelplaten na haar dood staat er soms een langere titel, met of zonder -s.

Veel standards die ik toch ook vooral in andere versies ken. Zo is Summertime in de uitvoering van Janis Joplin werkelijk geweldig. I Loves You Porgy wordt 'gewonnen' door Nina Simone, maar Billie heeft er ook iets eigens van gemaakt en verdient een plek in mijn top 10.

Let's Call the Whole Thing Off en They Can't Take That Away from Me zijn zeker goed in de versie van Billie, maar die platen horen in eerste instantie toch echt bij Ella (en Louis) wanneer ik ze in mijn hoofd hoor, zeker die laatstgenoemde plaat.

Onbetwiste nummer 1 voor mij. De zeggingskracht en intensiteit is zo onbeschrijflijk. De eerste keer dat ik de versie uit 1956 hoorde staat in m'n trommelvliezen gegrift. Eigenlijk heb ik de oorspronkelijke versie van 1939 pas laatst gehoord. Niet minder fraai, maar zo anders, lijken wel twee verschillende nummers. Rillingen all over, iedere keer weer.

Een haast lugubere protestsong tegen racisme en lynchpartijen in het zuiden van the USA, dat is Strange Fruit. En dat zong Billie Holiday in 1939 met lef en indringend. Het moet uiteindelijk toch enig effect gehad hebben? Dit bevlogen nummer is wat mij betreft ook nog eens haar beste nummer.
