Er gingen ook geluiden op om nog een spelletje te spelen voor 'metal < 1980'.
Motörhead versus Priest, Budgie versus Scorpions. Beetje Purple, Heep, Zep en Sab erbij: superleuk toch?
Ik ben daar in ieder geval wel voor te porren.
NB: MusicMeter geeft 78 albums aan met de tag 'metal' die van vóór 1980 dateren, dus daar lijkt me meer dan voldoende inspiratie uit te halen voor een spelletje met 64 (of 128) metalmoppies.

Ik ben dan maar een bangepoepert. Mijn gehele studeerkamer vol met Chuck posters en een Death-broodtrommeltje in de werkkantine, ben ik tevreden met de uitslag.

2023 zit nog vers in het geheugen en was voor mij een uitstekend jaar qua metal. Erg benieuwd naar de resultaten.

Een pre-1980 toernooitje lijkt mij ook wel wat voordat het toernooi der gouden alumni gaat plaatsvinden. Boordevol klassiekers en onmogelijke keuzes maar goed, wat moeten we anders doen?

We gaan er niet teveel over zeveren, zeker? Hier alvast m'n eerste vier drops voor 2023:

Ik had héle andere soort posters op mijn kamer hangen, haha! En een Death-broodtrommeltje klinkt heel smakelijk.

Ik gaf vanochtend een gastles voor Havo 3 op het Codarts Lyceum in Rotterdam (school voor dans en muziek). Na afloop raak ik nog even aan de praat met een van de leerlingen. Hij draagt een Misfits shirt aan, dus het onderwerp gaat al snel over muziek en ik vraag op een gegeven moment wat zijn favoriete band is. Dat blijkt Death te zijn. Toevallig toch? En erg cool van zo'n gozer van een jaar of 14, 15: áls het al metal is, dan niet van die moderne dingen (FFDP, nu metal, etc.), maar gewoon the one and only Death. En dat niet alleen: hij had voor school muziekopdrachten gemaakt waar hij als onderwerp twee nummers van Death had uitgekozen (waaronder ook 'Crystal Mountain') en speelt in een bandje waarin hij grunt (Chuck-style). Dat vond ik allemaal wel heel leuk om te horen.
(Hij was natuurlijk fokking jaloers toen ik hem vertelde dat ik die band live gezien had )

Erg vet dat hij daar zo mee bezig is, misschien horen wij nog wel van hem over een paar jaar.
FFDP en nu-metal zijn dan in ieder geval nog enigszins metal te noemen. De laatste jaren zijn ook bands als Bad Omens en Sleep Token populair die bijzonder weinig met metal van doen hebben, maar daar wel onder geschaard worden.

Geen problemen mee Johnny Marr, genoeg moois te kiezen.

Yes yes, fijne winnaar dat Death. Als de andere song gewonnen had, was m'n repliek geweest dat ik toch wel wist wie de symbolische winnaar was, poeh poeh.

Magere opkomst inderdaad, ik mis wel enkele vaste stemmers, zitten die op één of andere Progbeurs in een galaxie ver, ver e-weg? Wie zal 't zeggen..

Voort met 2023 inderdaad, de Jordy's zijn aan de gang as we speak en de sfeer zit daar wel lekker dus wij rollen lustig door. Maar 'ns kijken of ik enkele fijne nominaties kan bedenken. Als er animo/inspiratie genoeg is, zou ik trouwens willen voorstellen er een XL-editie van te maken: 128 nummers dus!

En nog een shout out richting het toffe Comus-shirt van EvilDrSmith!

128 moet lukken. Een selectie van favoriete labels gemaakt en wat meer kansrijke toevoegingen uitgezocht.

Helaas ben ik nu te druk om aan te haken.
