Kan ik het toch niet mee eens zijn hoor, en al helemaal niet als ik zie dat je drie songs blijkbaar nóg zwakker vindt? Of was je weer dronken, Sjonnie?
Neen hoor, ieder zijn meug. Hallowed Be Thy Name is wat mij betreft een favoriet voor de zegepraal, klassiekertje van Annihilator blijft met verve overeind, Kayo Dot is een originele verademing in dit topic en ook Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, Agoraphobic Nosebleed en Windir leveren juweeltjes af.
Monolith vind ook ik niet geweldig, maar die eindigt dan ook met stip achteraan.

Dream Theater zie ik als een typische 'love it or hate it'-band. Je zag het een beetje terug in de ladder. Finalist 'The Glass Prison' is bijna altijd in de top 3 of de bodem 3 terug te vinden. Bijzonder dat het in 2002 de finale had gehaald, want er zijn toch een aantal nummers/albums die nog veel indrukwekkender zijn en nu helaas ontbreken.
Voor de 4e keer op rij plaats ik een jaarwinnaar bovenaan.
Swallow The Sun komt heel goed binnen zo op de zondagavond, maar ik kan er niet meer van maken dan middenmotor. Mooi om te zien dat dit soort doom metal mijn bovenbuurman wel kan bekoren.
Op het nummer van Diamond Head na is het mij een erg bekend rijtje nummers. Helaas valt dat onbekende nummer mij nogal tegen. Die zanger herinner ik mij live niet zo slecht, maar op plaat vind ik hem helemaal niets. Daarmee zonder twijfel de laatste plaats voor deze finalist. Hoe heeft dit eigenlijk de finale gehaald? En ook 'High Spirits' met een halve finaleplek vind ik frappant. 2019 was een geweldig metal jaar, met zoveel betere nummers dan deze twee. Terugblikkend waren er destijds 'maar' 64 nummers genomineerd, waardoor veel kandidaten ontbraken. Om twee voorbeelden te geven: Wilderun en Mgla zijn niet eens genomineerd, terwijl beide albums een hoge score en relatief veel lof hadden vergaard op niet alleen Musicmeter.

Ladder #5: zo hé, Emma & Thou als vierde door naar de volgende ronde? Die had ik even volledig verkeerd ingecalculeerd. De Top 3 was echter naar verwachting, al had ik Annihilator wat meer punten toegedicht. De verliezers had ik deze keer helemaal fout.
DT en Windir naar huis en Emma & Thou direct door: rare jongens, die stemmers.
Ladder #6: drie bands die ik niet in deze finale had ingeschat. Deze onvoorspelbaarheid maakt het wel zo leuk, al is de kritiek/het commentaar van Apollo ook op zijn plaats. En van Wintersun had wel een ander nummer van het album gemogen. Evenzogoed zondermeer drie sterke nummers (de krasse knarren van Diamond Head verrassen me in zeer positieve zin), maar zet idd die Wilderun of Mgła (of White Ward, Cult Of Luna of Abigail Williams) tegenover Diamond Head of Pijn en het is een pijnlijk ongelijke strijd. Om over het laatste album van Tool nog maar te zwijgen, die bij mij in de loop der jaren is gegroeid tot hun magnum opus. En het was al de beste band ever.
Nummers #5-#8 geef ik allemaal ongeveer een 8,5, dus de volgorde is een beetje willekeurig.

DT en Windir naar huis en Emma & Thou direct door: rare jongens, die stemmers.
Ladder #6: drie bands die ik niet in deze finale had ingeschat. Deze onvoorspelbaarheid maakt het wel zo leuk, al is de kritiek/het commentaar van Apollo ook op zijn plaats. En van Wintersun had wel een ander nummer van het album gemogen. Evenzogoed zondermeer drie sterke nummers (de krasse knarren van Diamond Head verrassen me in zeer positieve zin), maar zet idd die Wilderun of Mgła (of White Ward, Cult Of Luna of Abigail Williams) tegenover Diamond Head of Pijn en het is een pijnlijk ongelijke strijd. Om over het laatste album van Tool nog maar te zwijgen, die bij mij in de loop der jaren is gegroeid tot hun magnum opus. En het was al de beste band ever.
Nummers #5-#8 geef ik allemaal ongeveer een 8,5, dus de volgorde is een beetje willekeurig.

Goed dat je deze vraag stelde, want daardoor zocht ik het toch even op. Het leek mij al zeer onwaarschijnlijk - totaal ander timbre - en inderdaad: dit is ene Rasmus Bom Andersen, een Deen zonder noemenswaardige staat van dienst voordat hij toetrad tot Diamond Head. Hij was nog niet eens geboren toen Diamond Head de ene na de andere klassieker maakte. Enkel die van Diamond Head vind ik een draak, is dat dezelfde zanger die zingt op Am I Evil? Nee toch?
Ik vind 'em trouwens prima zingen. Minder eigenzinnig, maar misschien nog wel beter dan Sean Harris. Doet me wat aan Jeff Scott Soto denken.
