Het lijkt wel een thema in deze finale, want ook deze song verhandelt over het leven in de ghetto. Een vrij sombere tekst waarin Scott-Heron de gevaren, maar ook de hopeloosheid, van het leven op straat bezingt. De titel van het nummer dekt in dit geval bijzonder goed de lading.

Geen topposities voor Scott-Heron, maar hij sprokkelde doorheen deze finale zijn puntjes, waardoor hij Home is Where the Hatred Is nipt boven California Soul eindigt.

Wereldwijde hit over de keerzijde van het beroemd zijn. Met afstand de grootste hit van alle nummers in deze finale. Billie Jean haalde overal de top van de hitparades en weet tot de dag van vandaag nieuwe liefhebbers aan zich te binden. Ik vind het ieder jaar weer gaaf om te merken dat de tien - en elfjarigen die ik lesgeef Billie Jean (en andere populaire Michael Jackson nummers) allemaal kennen en tof vinden.

Michael Jackson mag zich in deze finale de 'best of the rest' noemen met zijn zevende plaats. Het verschil met de nummer zes is namelijk maar liefst 59 (!!) punten. Billie Jean werd slechts tien keer genoemd, maar daar zaten wel twee eerste, een tweede, vier vierde en een vijfde plaats bij. Dat tikt aan qua punten en zodoende weet Michael Jackson zijn virtuele tweeëntwintigste plek om te zetten in een fraaie zevende plek in de eindlijst.

Otis is voor mij ook de grootste maar hij stond voor mij duidelijk met het verkeerde nummer in de finale, dit haalt mijn Otis top 10 niet. Eigenlijk beetje idem met Al Green, die normaal wel mijn top 12 zou halen met een ander nummer, maar ook dit vind ik nu juist niet z'n sterktste nummer.

Je legt het af tegen herman en catdog, die hebben de volledige top zes in hun lijstje!

Titelsong van het gelijknamige album, voor velen Gayes magnum opus. De inspiratie voor de krachtige tekst vond Marvin Gaye in het vele (politie)geweld waar zwarte Amerikanen mee te dealen kregen. Inmiddels is het uitgegroeid tot één van de bekendste protestliederen ooit.

We openen de top zes met de eerste van de twee Marvin Gaye songs. What's Going On is het hoogst genoteerde nummer zonder topposities, maar het werd wel heel vaak genoemd. Slechts twee liedjes kwamen vaker in een eindlijstje voor dan deze. What's Going On begon voortvarend aan deze finale en stond een poosje bovenaan, maar kon die koers niet vasthouden.

Ook Prince gaat een maatschappijkritische song niet uit de weg. In dit nummer behandelt Prince thema's als natuurrampen, armoede, drugsgebruik, bendegeweld en een dreigende nucleaire holocaust. Knap om zoveel ellende samen te bundelen in zo'n rete funky song.

Net naast het podium vinden we Prince en zijn Sign "☮︎" the Times. Waar ik bij Michael Jackson schreef dat ie 'best of the rest' is daar geldt dat voor Prince eigenlijk net zo, want het verschil met de top drie is maar liefst dertig punten.

Nog drie te gaan! En die staan binnen tien punten van elkaar. Met andere woorden, het was spannend! Over een uurtje á anderhalf krijgen jullie ze van me.

Wie zet ze alvast in de juiste volgorde?
