Waarschijnlijk het enige Beatlesnummer waarvan de cover bekender is dan het origineel. Toch krijgt deze versie weinig liefde van jullie. Zelf heb ik vooral een zwak voor het nummer omdat het de begintune was The Wonder Years, mijn favoriete serie toen ik jong was. Waarom wordt die serie trouwens nooit herhaald? Een jaar later scoorde Joe nog met de Beatlescover ‘She Came in Through the Bathroom Window’.

The Arrows waren een Britse band die een eigen TV-show kregen toen ze dit nummer in ander programma speelden (dat moet nog eens een optreden zijn geweest). Ze speelden het nummer daarna ook in hun eigen show en Joan Jett zag dat op TV. Het was 1976 en zij was met The Runaways door Engeland op tournee. Ook dat optreden moet overtuigend zijn geweest, want in 1981 scoorde ze er zelf een wereldhit mee
Over de versie van Britney zullen we het maar niet hebben.

De naam Jackie DeShannon zal niet veel mensen wat zeggen, maar de nummers die ze schreef in ieder geval wel. Andere artiesten hadden hits met ‘Put a Little Love in Your Heart’ , ‘When You Walk in the Room’, ‘Bette Davis Eye’ en dit nummer dat door Tracey Ullman de hitlijst in werd gezongen. Zij had binnen een jaar tijd 4 coverhits in Nederland. Naast dit nummer waren dat nog ‘They Don’t Know ‘ (van Kirsty Maccol), Doris Day's ‘Move Over Darling en een versie van Madness' ‘My Girl’ dat ze veranderde in ‘My Guy’. Naar haar kortstondige carrière als zangeres is Tracy vooral in Amerika bekend geworden met haar eigen TV-show. De claim to fame van dat programma was dat The Simpson er in zijn begonnen.

Roxy Music - Jealous Guy (John Lennon)*

Roxy Music was op tournee in Duitsland toen John Lennon werd vermoord en als eerbetoon voegden ze dit nummer toe aan hun set. Vanwege het grote succes brachten ze het daarna snel uit op single en het werd een van hun grootste hits. Als er in een popquiz een ‘fluit-ronde’ voorbij komt, zit Roxy Music er altijd in. Ik ging er dus vanuit dat zij dit aan het nummer hadden toegevoegd, maar het blijkt dat John Lennon ook al floot. Was mij nooit opgevallen.

Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Want to Have Fun (Robert Hazard)*

Robert Hazard is een obscure Amerikaanse muzikant, die volledig vergeten zou zijn als hij dit nummer niet had geschreven. Verder dan een demo bracht hij het nummer niet. Cyndi veranderde de tekst een beetje, zodat ze het vanuit een vrouwelijk perspectief kon zingen, maakte een ontzettend vrolijke videoclip en een wereldhit was geboren.

Nr. 25
New Adventures - Come On (Chuck Berry)*

‘Come On’ was in 1961 de laatste single die Chuck Berry uitbracht voor hij voor drie jaar de gevangenis in moest vanwegs een affaire met een minderjarig meisje. Het was dus ook meteen het einde van een tijdperk, want toen hij weer vrij kwam, hadden The Beatles en de Rolling Stones hun eerste singles uitgebracht en zag de muziekwereld er heel anders uit. Toch was Chuck Berry nog niet vergeten want de eerste single van de Rolling Stones was dit ‘Come on’. Dat werd alleen in Engeland een bescheiden hit. Dat deden de mannen uit Winschoten onder de hoede van George Kooymans 16 jaar later een stuk beter. Mooi dat er toch nog wat Nederlandse inbreng is in deze top 30.

Na de Everly Brothers nam ook Roy Orbinson het nummer begin jaren 60 op. In beide gevallen was het geen single. Nazareth werd geïnspireerd door de prachtige versie van Gram Parsons en maakten er een echte rockballad van. Die smaakte vooral de Noren erg goed want in Noorwegen is deze cover de beste verkochte single ooit. Stond meer dan een jaar in de hitlijst.

Blondie - Denis (Randy and the Rainbows)*

Ok, ze moesten een Amerikaanse meisje ombouwen naar een Franse man, maar daarmee hadden ze wel hun doorbraak in Europa te pakken. Ze scoorden daarna met nog een aantal covers, waaronder ‘The Tide is High’ en een nummer dat we morgen nog in de lijst tegenkomen.

Nr. 22
Ike & Tina Turner – Proud Mary (CCR)
60 punten; Nr 1 van: EvilDrSmith

Ike hield niet van het origineel van CCR, maar een versie van de Checkmates, Ltd gaf hem de inspiratie om het nummer ook op te nemen. Geen slecht idee, want het werd hun grootste hit.

Tina Turner ging daarna door met het coveren. Ze startte in de jaren 80 haar solocarrière op met 2 covers, ‘Let’s Stay Togethere’ (Al Green) en ‘Help’ (The Beatles) en ook haar bekendste nummer ‘ The Best’ is een cover (van Bonnie Tyler). Wel zo eerlijk dus dat haar nummer ‘Don’t Turn Around’ (een B-kantje van ‘Typical Male’) in 2 coverversies de top 10 haalde in ons land (Aswad en Ace of Base)

Nr. 21
The Bangles – Hazy Shade of Winter (Simon & Garfunkel)*

Deze cover, afkomstig van de soundtrack van ‘Less Than Zero’, won de Greatest Hits editie van The Bangles, dus logisch dat we hem hier ook weer tegenkomen. Hoewel hun repertoire zich er goed voor leent, hebben toch maar weinig covers van Simon & Garfunkel de Top 40 gehaald. Ik kan naast deze alleen Mrs. Robinson van Booker T & MG’s bedenken (en die is instrumentaal). Bekendere covers als die van Disturbed en The Lemonheads waren geen hits.

Erg leuk Jan Jelle, met die achtergronden erbij !!
