De nieuwste van Lily Allen wringt wat. Dit nummer voelt alsof smakeloze reality TV, vaak doelbewust draaiend rond sensatie-gedreven drama en gossip, zijn weg gevonden heeft naar de muziekwereld. Al bestaat het fenomeen al veel langer natuurlijk. Toch voelt dit een beetje als a new low.

Reeds verschillende superlatieven gelezen over de zogenaamd straffe teksten die getuigen van durf en lef, de moedige meid neemt geen blad voor de mond. Tjah, op mij komt het vooral plat en ordinair over. Makkelijk scoren. Akkoord, Miley Cyrus deed iets gelijkaardigs met Flowers, maar dat was naar mijn gevoel meer smaakvol. Een effectief goede song met een spitsvondige kwinkslag qua tekst. 't Poesjespaleis van Lily kruipt dan wel onvermijdelijk in het hoofd, muzikaal zijn deze deuntjes toch niet bepaald indrukwekkend.

Moest de vuile was van David Harbour (Hopper uit Stranger Things), die rond de release van het album op ingenieus georchestreerde wijze uitgesmeerd werd, geheel toevallig *kuch* samenvallend met wat schadelijke roddels, geen deel uitmaken van dit album ... zou er volgens mij geen haan naar kraaien. Sinds haar jaren in de hitpararde, die nu toch al geruime tijd achter ons liggen, was er immers een pak minder aandacht voor haar werk. Sensatiezucht bij publiek én pers maakt dat ze nu scoort. Dat het haar absoluut niet om wraak te doen is, zegt ze. Tjah, erg geloofwaardig klinkt dat niet, alles behalve. Het is me allemaal net iets te berekend. Toch een beetje een vies gevoel bij.

Alles gehoord vlak nadat het gelost werd, mijn gevoel is ietwat van toepassing op het hele album. Enfin, er zitten leuke deuntjes tussen hoor, inclusief 't poesjespaleis en Madeline, maar absoluut niet van die aard dat er superlatieven moeten aan opgehangen worden. De goedkope nasmaak zit momenteel enorm in de weg. Niets aan te doen. Misschien gaat dat ooit nog verwateren.

De week van de zangeressen, wat mij betreft. Het kostte aardig wat luisterbeurten voordat ik de schoonheid van Berghain van de toch wel érg bejubelde Rosalía eindelijk wist te doorgronden.
