Op 4 augustus 1958 verscheen de eerste editie van de Billboard Hot 100 in de VS. Voor die tijd was er de voorloper The Top 100 en daarnaast allerlei andere hitlijsten waaruit geput kon worden om te zien welke songs op dat moment hot waren. Denk aan lijsten als Most Played by Jockeys, of, Best Sellers in Stores, of, Most Played in Jukeboxes.

Het was prachtig om al die lijsten te zien, maar je zag ook door de bomen het bos niet meer. Billboard bleek revolutionair te zijn toen ze op 4 augustus 1958 de definitieve keuze maakte om één alles leidende lijst te publiceren: The Billboard Hot 100. Het zou de absolute standaard in de muziekindustrie worden en vrijwel elk land kent tegenwoordig één ‘ultieme hitlijst’. Ben je fan van zo’n soort hitlijst? Billboard, bedankt. Houd je helemaal niet van zo’n soort hitlijst? Billboard, je bent bedankt.

Hoe dan ook; het is bijna 4 augustus en het leek mij een leuk idee om deze nieuwe KO te spelen. We nemen een kijkje naar de nummer 1-hits van die legendarische Hot 100, maar blikken ook een beetje terug naar welke songs en artiesten goed scoorden vlak vóór de intrede van die nieuwe Billboard-lijst.

Dit spelletje draait om de nummer 1-hits gescoord tussen begin 1957 en eind 1960. We gaan de Amerikanen het laten opnemen tegen de Britten en een heel klein beetje tegen de Nederlanders.
