Visage is net buiten de boot gevallen

1. Tubeway Army - Are Friends Electric?
Deze komt als eerste bij me op als iemand de term “new wave” bezigt. Velen gingen aan de slag met synths, maar slechts een enkeling wist er ook echt een briljant liedje mee te smeden. IJskoud en hartverwarmend.

2. Joy Division - She's Lost Control
Dat ritme en drumgeluid… typische IC-lyrics ook natuurlijk.

3. Wire - I Should Have Known Better
Na eerst al het ultieme punkalbum gemaakt te hebben met Pink Flag, bleven de heren nieuwe en al dan niet bizarre vormen van muzikale schoonheid aanboren. Pareltje.

4. The Associates - Party Fears Two
Leuke verrassing dat ie nog meedoet! Tikje over de top, ik heb wel wat met platen die zo behendig op de rand van de goede smaak balanceren.

5. Dead Can Dance – Threshold
Dit is wat mij betreft het ultieme DCD-geluid, vooral door de dwingende drums.

6. The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?
De nummers van The Smiths zijn voor mij afwisselend hit en miss. Dit is in ieder geval een hit. De vermaarde Morrissey-pathos, zie ook regel 2 bij mijn nummer 4.

7. New Order - Blue Monday
Dit blijft gewoon een kneiter van een hit. Ik kan er niet meer, maar zeker ook niet minder van maken.

8. Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
Laatst ook al opgegraven voor de Greatest Hits of Talking Heads. Een plaat die uiteindelijk altijd weer komt bovendrijven, en terecht.

9. The The - Uncertain Smile
10. Killing Joke - Love Like Blood
Deze twee vallen officieel eigenlijk net buiten het “new wave” –gebeuren, maar omdat het allebei perfecte popsongs zijn waarin “het sfeertje” wel degelijk verweven is, neem ik ze toch graag mee.

Zoals ik al zei. Het duurt me allemaal te lang en dan wil je wel eens je concentratie verliezen. en dan ga je fouten maken. Maar goed, dat ene nummer van de SM is instrumentaal en het andere niet. Dus laat maar mooi staan.

Momentopname, zoals wel vaker. Om het iets minder moeilijk te maken ook maar beperkt tot één nummer per artiest, maar dan nog moeilijk om te kiezen. Sommige artiesten zijn er ook uitgevallen waar ze er met andere nummers zeker in zouden komen. Duidelijkste voorbeeld daarvan is voor mij Dead Can Dance met Enigma of the Absolute of met Anywhere Out of the World in plaats van Threshold. Waarbij ik mij er niet aan waag om te oordelen over het meer of minder Wave zijn van genoemde nummers.

Dat 'Boys Don't Cry' en 'Transmission' het zo slecht doen, vind ik al een verrassing.

Joy Division met 6 en The Cure met 4 finalisten.
Transmission en Boys Don't Cry moeten het onderspit delven.

Op zich toch niet zo'n verrassing vind ik.

Als een nummer beter is, dan moet hij gewoon in de top 10.
Het is dat er niet meer Cure songs genomineerd waren, zoals The Same Deep Water As You of Lullabye, Disintegration of Fascination Street.
