Dit lied schreef onze zuiderbuur nadat zijn vriendin het had uitgemaakt, en dat kun je horen ook, wat een expressie van verdriet en wanhoop. Hij is wellicht de beste chansonnier en dit is een briljante vertolking van één van de mooiste chansons. Het werd onder andere gecovered door Nina Simone (in het frans), onze eigen grote zangeres Liesbeth List (nederlands), Céline Purcell (afrikaans) en Rod McKuen (engels). De track staat ook dit jaar weer in de Top 2000, vorig jaar op plaats 208, daarvoor op 388, 207, 114. Hier stond hij al tweemaal op de eerste plaats, dit jaar is hij iets gezakt. De wrange klanken worden gevormd door een 'Ondes-Martenot', een vroege synthesizer, bespeeld door Sylvette Allart. Chanson.

Gelukkig heeft het geen effect op #1 en #2 die ik nu ga publiceren. De rest pas ik straks dan nog wel aan.

Dit lied wilde haar platenmaatschappij niet uitbrengen, het was te controversieel. Uiteindelijk werd het één van haar 'signature songs'. Het werd haar gewoonte het bij een optreden als laatste ten gehore te brengen, met gedimd licht. Een schrijnend politiek statement, wat hier gelukkig gewaardeerd wordt. In de Top 2000 wat minder, maar vorig jaar - na een jaar weggeweest te zijn - stond hij er gelukkig weer in, op plaats 1332, en dit jaar op plaats 1472. Hier staat het nu voor het derde jaar in de Top 5. De versie van Nina Simone uit 1965 lijkt me een mooie nominatiekandidaat. Jazz.

Het mag geen verrassing zijn dat deze track de eerste plaats veroverd heeft, want het was immers ook de enige van onze finalisten die tevens deelneemt aan de finale van de Top 2000; Sam Cooke strandde daar al in Ronde 5 en Bob Dylan in Ronde 6. Dat deze uitvoerende klassieke piano gestudeerd heeft aan het conservatorium is hier goed te horen, maar haar roots zijn ook onmiskenbaar. De langste track van ons deelnemersveld, en zeer opzwepend. De vorige twee jaren stond van haar steeds een andere track in de finale. Pop/Jazz.
