Good Vibrations? Black Soul Choir? In dat geval mag ik London Calling wel nomineren toch?

Viva Forever is wel een geweldige nominatie .

Kun je goed beargumenteren waarom dat nummer onderschat is?

Ik vind trouwens sowieso dat deze verkiezing een stuk beter zou zijn als er bij elk nummer een motivatie zou staan.

Jullie weten dat er nog een KO volgt waarin de nummers die niet onderschat worden bevonden gewoon afvallen hé?

Ik vind het beargumenteren van nominaties in deze wel een goede. Ik ga toch met een lijstje komen (bijna klaar) met daarin enkel onderbouwde onderschattingen .

Wanneer is een nummer onderschat en wanneer is het simpelweg onbekend? Ik heb getracht enkel nummers te nomineren die (vermoed ik) bij de meeste van jullie bekend zijn maar desondanks niet de waardering krijgen die ik denk dat ze verdienen. Ik ben hierbij uitgegaan van onze toplijsten (de ladder, de witte trui (in mindere mate)) en heb enkel nummers genomineerd die niet in onze top 2000 staan. Daarnaast heb ik geprobeerd ook de waardering bij 'het grote publiek' nog mee te nemen in mijn overweging. De volgende vijftien liedjes zijn eruit gekomen:

Amy Macdonald - Let's Start a Band
Afgelopen jaar vruchteloos genomineerd voor de ladder door Chevy. Toch hoort dit nummer wat mij betreft zeker bij de tweeduizend beste allertijden.

Bill Withers - Can We Pretend
Albums één en twee zijn bij een vrij groot publiek bekend, opvolger +'Justments des te minder. Dit is voor mij de mooiste parel van Bill's derde album.

Bon Jovi - Runaway
Zouden er veel mensen Bon Jovi een warm hart toedragen? Ik betwijfel het. Toch zijn een aantal nummers echt de moeite waard en dit is er daar één van.

Curtis Mayfield - Freddie's Dead
Ten onrechte vaak in de schaduw van Pusherman en Superfly.

David Bowie - Golden Years
Gegeven, er mogen maximaal zestien liedjes per artiest in de ladder staan. Maar, dit is toch zeker wel één van Bowies zestien beste?!

Frank Sinatra - In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning
The Voice krijgt hier op de site niet de waardering die hij - zeker met zijn gevoelige nummers als deze - absoluut verdient.

Gene Clark - Strength of Strings
Werd bekend met The Byrds maar kreeg (en krijgt) solo niet de waardering die onder andere dit schitterende werkje wel zou moeten krijgen.

Holden - Renata
In het verleden vruchteloos genomineerd voor de ladder. Gek natuurlijk dat deze knaller niet in de lijst staat. En ook bij Radio 2 zal het er de komende jaren wel niet inzitten...

Joe Jackson & Elaine Caswell - Happy Ending
Één van zijn mooiste liedjes. Sinds een aantal jaar wel in de Radio 2 lijst te vinden maar we sluiten hier op de site nog steeds onze ogen voor deze hit.

Joy Division - Day of the Lords
Één van hun beste nummers die niet de waardering krijgt die veel andere Joy Division nummers wel krijgen.

Marvin Gaye - When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You
Één van zijn drie beste nummers maar bij ons vorig jaar uit de lijst gekieperd! Sowieso krijgt album Here, My Dear (onterecht) niet de waardering die What's Going On en Let's Get It On wel krijgen.

Michael Jackson - Off the Wall
Als er één artiest onderschat wordt hier op MuMe is het Michael Jackson wel. De King of Pop die met liedje na liedje uit de top 2000 gegooid wordt en dit jaar met Thriller (maar) een vijftigste plek in de albumlijst van de jaren '80 scoorde, absurd!

Nina Simone - Wild Is the Wind
Bowie's cover prijkt pontificaal in onze lijst, het nog net iets knappere origineel werd kansloos uitgeschakeld. Klassenjustitie? Of gewoon de dodemansbonus die goed uitpakt voor Bowie? Hoe dan ook, dit origineel wordt onderschat!

Radiohead - Videotape
Wat mij betreft één van Radioheads mooiste en meest gevoelige liedjes. Toch worden er vier nummers van In Rainbows als 'meer favoriet' aangevinkt en is ook de top 2000 nog niet gehaald.

Sly & The Family Stone - Everyday People (Different Strokes for Different Folks)
Sly & The Family Stone, iemand die deze funkhelden niet kent? En toch is er in onze top 2000 geen plek voor deze supergroep. Ik zeg, zwaar onterecht!

Als andere hun nominaties nog willen beargumenteren zou dat tof zijn, dat geeft toch een beter beeld waarom een nummer onderschat zou worden.

Avantasia- Farewell

Een op musicmeter vrijwel genegeerde en in de 'buitenwereld' wat ondergeschoven metalband die m.i.i. fantastische (vaak symfonische) metalballads en anthems voortbrengt. Kan me voorstellen dat dit je niet ligt (te schreeuwerig, vervelende zang o.i.d.), maar ik vind het zelf echt fantastische muziek. Had eigenlijk The Seven Angels willen nomineren, maar dat doe ik de negatieve luisteraars liever niet aan (lees: dat nummer duurt 14 minuten). Op Farewell een bijdrage van Sharon den Adel, die hier en daar nog wel op bijval kan rekenen.

Enya- May it be

Enya vind ik prachtig, categorie Dead Can Dance (qua gevoel dat het oproept), fijne melancholie; DCD doet het echter goed in de ladder en Enya zien we zelden terug daar. Toch een wereldartiest..

Fish- Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors

Valt binnen de prog-discussie die al meermaals is gevoerd hier, al vind ik ook niet alle prog goed.

Hans Zimmer- Time

Tsja, soundtracks.. Misschien wel mijn favoriete genre maar musicmeter kan/doet er niet heel veel mee. Williams, Morricone en Shore o.a. behoren ook tot de favorieten.

John Mayer- Neon (live)

Ben een groot fan van zijn gitaarwerk en liveconcert in 2008 (Where the Light is), maar hier moet je daar over het algemeen niet mee aankomen. Deze artiest vind ik buiten MuME dan weer beter op waarde geschat.


Kraftwerk- Europe Endless

Mijn favoriete van Kraftwerk, maar krijgt het in de eerste fase van de ladder vaak direct moeilijk.

Ludovico Einaudi- Primavera

Prachtige piano-muziek, kan ik uren achtereen op hebben. Wel op de achtergrond dan, maar dit nummer, een van zijn beste wat mij betreft, luistert ook los uitstekend weg.

Mariee Sioux- Wild Eyes

Ontdekt via de Witte Trui (volgens mij), maar sneuvelde pas nog in de 2e ronde (dacht ik). Echt een prachtnummer en een van mijn grotere ontdekkingen op deze site, maar bij de stemmende massa kan 'ie op minder bijval rekenen. Buiten MuMe ook erg tot geheel onbekend.

Nightwish- Over the Hills and Far Away

Beetje hetzelfde verhaal als bij Avantasia, al is Nightwish in de 'buitenwereld' wel echt een stuk populairder. Op musicmeter echter ook opzij geschoven. Ik moest een nummer kiezen van de band, had er zo 10 andere neer kunnen zetten.

The Nits- Adie, Sweet Bahnhof

Ben ik recentelijk steeds meer gaan waarderen (specifiek dit nummer), en is toch vooral in Nederland muziekland onderschat.

- Geniale mix van een makkelijk meezingbaar popnummer en een ravenummer. Wordt zelfs door de kenners weinig gewaardeerd, getuige de uitschakeling in de 2e ronde van de Eurodance KO

Bon Iver - Blindsided
- Bon Iver is een artiest die op veel waardering kan rekenen, maar op deze site ook vaak verguisd wordt, getuige ook de matige resultaten in de Ladder en andere spellen, terwijl (in mijn ogen) mindere artiesten uit het zelfde straatje daar beter scoren. Uiteindelijk voor het wat meer ondergewaardeerde Blindsided gekozen.

Brian Eno - By This River
- Brian Eno's werk wordt redelijk op waarde geschat, maar juist op het moment dat ie het minst ambient en meest pop is, is hij eigenlijk op zijn best. 2 jaar geleden genomineerd voor de ladder, maar kansloos in de eerste ronde uitgeschakeld.

- Unieke, creatieve en vooral zijn tijd ver vooruitzijnde muziek. Wordt niet voor niets door veel metal- en neofolk-bands als grote inspiratiebron gezien. Krijgt hier op de site nog een klein beetje waardering, daarbuiten is die praktisch non-existent.

- Iedereen heeft het altijd over The Passenger en Lust for Life, maar op The Idiot is Iggy veel beter.

Isaac Hayes - Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic
- In een betere wereld zou dit worden gezien als een van de beste nummers ooit gemaakt, zo geniaal. Helaas is dat verre van zo. Zou het door de moeilijke titel komen?

James Blake - Life Round Here
- Ik vind James Blake een van de meest innovatieve en beste artiesten van de afgelopen jaren. Helaas is zowel binnen, als buiten MuMe, lang niet iedereen dat met me eens. LImit to Your Love werd iig nog een bescheiden hit, Life Round Here haalt onterecht nergens de annalen.

James Brown - The Payback
- James Brown vind ik persoonlijk een van de belangrijkste artiesten in de muziekgeschiedenis en The Payback zijn beste nummer. Zou op dezelfde hoogte moeten staan als bv. What's Going On, Like a Rolling Stone en Paranoid Android qua klassiekerstatus. Is helaas niet het geval.

Koto - Visitors
- Italodisco is sowieso een onderschat genre. Ik moet de eerste persoon nog meemaken die dit nummer hoort en er niet direct vrolijk van wordt. Lijkt me toch een erg sterke gave voor een nummer.

Trentemøller - Take Me Into Your Skin
- Trentemøller ten tijde van The Last Resort was terecht een kleine hype, zelden is een artiest er zo adequaat in geslaagd om dansvloer- en luisterelektronica te combineren. Toen al door weinige serieuze media op waarde geschat (Q gaf dit album bv. slechts 2*), op MuMe zakt het hard weg uit alle lijstjes en over de Radio 2 top 2000 hoef ik niet eens te beginnen...

Ewert & the Two Dragons - Good Man Down
- Ooit een tip van mijn ex-stagiair, die dit leerde kennen via zijn Estse vriendin. Had alles in zich om uit te groeien tot een grote internationale act, maar die doorbraak is er helaas nooit van gekomen.

Forest Swords - Thor's Stone
- In de electronic is al veel gedaan de afgelopen 25 jaar. Forest Swords krijgt het voor elkaar om met een absolute unieke sound te komen en Thor's Stone is een geniaal nummer. Helaas sta ik redelijk alleen in die mening. Bij het laatste optreden dat ik van hen heb gezien, kon ik alle aanwezigen een hand hebben gegeven, voordat het eerste nummer was afgelopen...

Terry Callier - Dancing Girl
- Geniaal nummer met een prachtige opbouw. Waar staat dit nummer in de annalen van de popmuziek? Vrijwel nergens.

Toots & the Maytals - 54-46 Was My Number
- Reggae wordt al weinig gewaardeerd hier, en in Nederland in het algemeen. Als reggae de revue al eens passeert, is het vrijwel altijd Bob Marley. Onterecht, want dit is gewoon een ijzersterk nummer van Toots & the Maytals.

Units - High Pressure Days
- In de categorie postpunkbands, die ten onrechte obscuur zijn gebleven, is er een ruime keuze aan onderschatte acts. High Pressure Days vormt voor mij echter de crème de la crème van het genre en verdient absoluut meer aandacht.

Near the Parenthesis - Under Lights

Weliswaar het populairste nummer op Go Out and See, maar behalve bij een select clubje moviemeteraars, zwaar obscuur en gedijt het in de schaduw van volledige anonimiteit. Zwaar onterecht natuurlijk, dit nummer dient als mijn persoonlijke dagritme op een lome zomerdag, waarbij je eerst tegen het ontwaken aanzit, daarna halfslaperig op je fiets stapt op weg naar je werk en je belandt in sociaal verkeer, waarna de toonzetting veranderd en de avond zijn intrede doet. Euforisch en melancholisch tegelijkertijd. Behoort gewoon tot het beste van het beste als het op sfeervolle electronic aankomt.

The Field - Day

From Here we Go To Sublime was een bescheiden succes op MM. Hoe anders verging het The Sound of Light amper 1 jaar later. Nauwelijks aandacht voor deze prachtige minimal techno productie. Een onderschat genre wat sowieso te lijden heeft onder vele onwetende rockers en mensen die zijn blijven hangen in een bepaald decennium lang geleden, dit soort muziek wordt door hen normaal afgedaan als ''er gebeurt niets'' of ''de plaat blijft haken''. ZUCHT!

Belle & Sebastian - There`s too Much Love

Waarom behoort dit prachtige nummer, dit zoetgevooisde eerbetoon aan de liefde, dit vrolijke en instrumentaal uitstekend in elkaar stekende nummer niet tot 1 van de beste 10 Belle & Sebastian nummers? Waarom staan Belle & Sebastian uberhaubt nog niet in de Top 2000 van Radio 2??? Anyone?

Stereolab - Crest

Een band en nummer naar mijn hart. Helaas uit het oog uit het hart bij velen. Waarom worden we altijd doodgegooid met Beatles en Dylan imitators en is er geen ziel die eens fatsoenlijk af kan studeren aan het conservatorium, opdat ze ook eens leren hoe je ander repertoire moet spelen? Waarom heeft Paradiso deze band nog niet 1 miljoen geboden om weer bijeen te komen voor een reünie. En waarom werd dit ''rocknummer'' vorig jaar genadeloos afgeschoten in de MuMeladder?!

Spice Girls - Viva Forever

De bekendste meidenband van de 90`s, yes! Vele Top 40 hits, yes! Spiceworld the Movie, een van de slechtste films van de 90`s? yes! Allemaal factoren waardoor de Girls sindsdien met de nek worden aangekeken door iedere muziekcriticus en menig snob. Maar deze parel onderscheidt zich van zijn soortgenoten, het is gewoon een zeer gevoelig, meeslepend popnummer en langer houdbaar dan velen andere nummers van hen die kampen met een te hoog en oppervlakkig ''macht aan de vrouwen'' boodschap.

All Saints - Pure Shores

Verguisde meidengroep, met dit nummer hoogstens als een guilty pleasure voor sommige mensen. En toch ken ik weinig nummers met zoveel onderhuidse spanning als dit machtige popnummer dat anno 2016 nog steeds kraakhelder overeind is blijven staan. Echter amper op de radio te horen en kreeg nooit de erkenning die het verdient.

Chemical Brothers - One Too Many Mornings

Lowlands 2015, The Chemical Brothers namen dit nummer niet in hun setlist op. Grrrrrrrr.

Orbital - Way Out

Onderschatte band, onderschat album, onderschat nummer. Geweldig subtiel en dit nummer wordt instrumentaal heerlijk voortgestuwd. Werd hier na een bescheiden binnenkomst op #1994 in de Top 2000, vorig jaar gewoon weer net zo hard aan de kant gesmeten door verwende MuMe stemmers die teveel rock hebben gegeten.

Fatboy Slim - Right Here Right Now

Hopeloos onderschat ten opzichte van Praise You en Rockefeller Skank, toch ook geen hoogvliegers in de Top 2000 of op de lokale radio. Samen met zijn remix van Brimful of Aisha behorend tot zijn beste werk!

The Prodigy - Climbatize

Ik ontdekte The Fat of the Land dankzij dit nummer, raar maar waar. Had wel eens van Breathe en Smack My Bitch Up gehoord, maar dit nummer zette mij ertoe aan om het volledige album te gaan beluisteren. Lekker wegdromen bij die heerlijke sambabal geluiden. Serieus, waarom doet dit nummer er niet toe in het oeuvre van The Prodigy?

David Bowie - I`m Deranged

Tja, Bowie heeft natuurlijk een oeuvre om van te watertanden. Maar behoudens David Lynch die dit nummer voor zijn redelijk obscure film ''Lost Highway'' gebruikte, zie ik dit nummer nauwelijks ergens opduiken als een van de beste Bowie nummers. En dat terwijl dit nummer zo als zwanenzang gediend zou kunnen hebben op zijn laatste album.

Joy Division - Atmosphere

Waarom staat dit nummer niet in de top 2000 en waarom doet dit nummer altijd onder voor het wat overgewaardeerde Love Will Tear Us Apart?

Dj Shadow - High Noon

Er is ook een leven voor dj Shadow naast Entroducing!

Britney Spears - Toxic

Door iedereen omschreven als een guilty pleasure. Waarom dan? Gewoon een heerlijk popnummer dat ik kan blijven draaien.

Autechre - Piezo

De voorloper van Four Tet zeg maar, heerlijke organische en gelaagde productie. Maar kansloos voor wat voor een top notering dan ook, want er zijn geen vocalen voorhanden in dit nummer.....
