"Rock music today is in its healthiest state since the 1970s. Fans are attending more gigs and more festivals than ever before and the guitar is definitely back as the weapon of choice. So what better time to launch a celebration of the genre.

This is the first episode of a major new landmark series that travels through the Seven Ages of Rock - a journey that takes us from sweaty clubs to vast stadiums, from the crackly 45 to the MP3 download. Along the way, the genre's greatest performers, writers and producers tell us how rock emerged, grew, and gave voice to each new generation that embraced it.

This episode looks at 1966. A young American guitarist called Jimi Hendrix arrives in Britain to find a music scene on the brink of major change. Artists like The Beatles, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones and The Who are all eager to move in new directions. But it's Hendrix who has the musical pedigree and the vision to ignite the revolution that will deliver to the world a new, hard-edged music of attitude: Rock.

This is the story of that rock revolution of the 1960s, as seen through the life and music of Jimi Hendrix. We see how he became the first - ultimately doomed - icon of rock. Delta blues man, Dylan-esque poet and technological prophet, Hendrix was the synthesis of everything that had gone before him and all that was to come. Some strong language."

Ik weet niet of het al gepost is en sommigen zullen het wel al weten, maar vanavond start er een nieuwe serie op de BBC genaamd ''Seven Ages of Rock''

De BBC heeft altijd wel toffe documentaires.

Lijkt me een fraaie serie. Eens kijken of het niet al te UK-geörienteerd is en of er een goed beeld wordt geschetst van de rockgeschiedenis. Ik ben benieuwd.

En... wat vonden 'we' van dit eerste deel?

Geweldig, Jimi! Ik vond het een prima uitzending.

Volgende week Floyd en Bowie!

Ik vond het weer een typische BBC-uitzending; grondig en diepgaand, hoewel ik sommige stukken wel herkende uit andere documentaires. Ik heb nu eenmaal een zwak voor muziekdocumentaires en zeker die van de BBC, dus kijk ik er veel naar. Zelfs wanneer de band of het genre mij niet zoveel zegt.

Dat laatste is nieuws voor me; hahaha ( zie ook reacties van mijn bovenbuurman bij de Band of Gypsys)

Nee; een mooi stuk tijdgeschiedenis; herkenbaar en mooie beelden.

Ik denk dat de hele serie de moeite waard zal zijn want ik heb Charles Shaar Murray als popkenner hoog zitten.

Nogmaals, ik heb niets tegen Jimi Hendrix. Ik word alleen een beetje moe van de blinde verering richting zijn persoon...

Van de BBC verwacht ik eigenlijk niets anders. Ik denk overigens dat deze serie wel eens op dvd kan verschijnen (vanwege het feit dat de uitzending in breedbeeld plaatsvond), uitgebreid met dingen die nu enkel via de site te zien zijn.

Damn, gemist.

beste omayyad; hoewel ik steeds vaker een leesbril nodig heb ben ik nog lang niet blind, en lid van een kerkgenootschap ben ik ook niet.
Dus ik ga er van uit dat je mij niet bedoeld.
Ben hoogstens enthousiast; zo af en toe, bij een aantal muzikanten en muziekjes die me wat doen...

Vandaag wel en in de komende afleveringen worden ook voornamelijk UK bands behandeld. Alleen aflevering 3 heeft het 50/50 en aflevering 6 is geheel aan Amerika gewijd.

The story of how artistic and conceptual expression permeated rock. From the pop-art multi-media experiments of Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground to the sinister gentility of Peter Gabriel's Genesis, White Light, White Heat traces how rock became a vehicle for artistic ideas and theatrical performance. We follow Pink Floyd from the fated art school genius of Syd Barrett through the global success of Dark Side of the Moon to the ultimate rock theatre show, The Wall. Along the way, the film explores the retro-futurism of Roxy Music and the protean world of David Bowie.

A tale of two cities, London and New York and the birth of punk. Each city created a bastard child that marked the biggest and fundamental shift in popular music since Elvis walked into Sun Studios. Blank Generation unpicks the relationship between the bankrupt New York and the class and race-riven London of the mid-1970's and explores the music of The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones, Television, Patti Smith, The Damned and Buzzcocks.

aflevering 4 - 9-6
The story of the longest surviving and certainly the loudest genre of rock, heavy metal. With no sign of disappearing, metal has been the most controversial and misunderstood of all rock genres. Emerging at the tail end of the hippy dream from the rust belt of industrial England, heavy metal would go on to secure the most loyal fan base of all. With Black Sabbath as the undisputed Godfathers, we follow their highs and lows, and, along the journey, meet Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Metallica.

We Are The Champions follows the development of some the biggest names in Rock, among them Queen, Bruce Springsteen, The Police and Dire Straits and shows how, through events such as Live Aid and the rise of MTV, rock achieved a global influence on culture and politics. The film concludes in the early 90s, as U2 effectively brought the era to a close by reinventing the big rock show so completely, that fifteen years later most major rock tours are still pale facsimiles.

The rise of alternative rock in the USA. From its early underground days where bands like Black Flag drew inspiration from the DIY ethos of punk, Left Of The Dial traces the history of the network of fans, clubs and fanzines that sustained the scene and launched the careers of bands like REM, The Pixies and Hüsker Dü. The film takes a fresh look at the explosion of the Seattle scene, culminating in the success of Nirvana's 'Nevermind' and the tragic loss of Kurt Cobain, an artist whose triumph and tragedy continues to cast an inescapable shadow.

The story of British indie, beginning with The Smiths, the archetypal indie group. The film follows The Stone Roses as the heirs to the indie crown, Suede's dark sexuality and the media saturation of Brit-pop's Blur v Oasis. What The World Is Waiting For explores how indie ultimately lost its once cherished intimacy and integrity in front of 250,000 fans at Oasis's Knebworth spectacle in 1996 and how, by returning to its roots in clubs and bars (and even front rooms) with bands such as Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines and The Arctic Monkeys, indie became respectable again.

Heel herkenbaar. Alsof er na Hendrix geen muziek leven meer is.
Heb overigens wel genoten van de documentaire. Ook van Hendrix.
Wat mij wederom verbaasde was het slopen van gitaren door zowel de Who als Hendrix.
Ik snap niet dat een muziekant zijn instrument sloopt. Soort van heiligschennis vind ik dat.
De meeste muzikanten koesteren hun intrument als ware het hun eigen kind.

Ik wist niet dat de BBC met een nieuwe documentaire over de rockgeschiedenis begon. Zapte vanavond toevallig op de BBC, toen het nog maar vijf minuten bezig was, dus heb nog wel de hele eerste aflevering kunnen zien. Ik hoopte eigenlijk op een algemene documentaire, maar het ging vooral Hendrix (wel in zijn context gezet). Het lijkt me een prima serie in ieder geval, interessante artiesten die aanbod komen en leuke beeldfragmenten. Jammer genoeg lijkt het maar weinig verschillend van andere docu's; weer gaat het over "Like a Rolling Stone" van Dylan en Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, weer de beelden van Jimi Hendrix op Monterey en Woodstock, weer de beelden van The Stones op Altamont. Nieuwe paden bewandelt het dus niet. Maar een muziekdocu - zeker van de BBC - is altijd tof. Heb er zeker van genoten dus de volgende afleveringen ga ik ook zeker proberen te volgen.

Neen, het was beslist niet op jou gericht, maar in het algemeen...

Geen nood, je kunt hem nu al pindakazen.

Het lijkt inderdaad heiligschennis en vreselijk bruut, toch zat er een gedachte achter. Ze wilden er mee benadrukken dat ze in het concert werkelijk álles hadden gegeven en dat er uit dat instrument niets meer te halen viel. Townshend was hierdoor geïnspireerd door de stroming Auto Destructive Art.


Ik vond het goed dat alle beelden van Jimi nu eens in één aflevering te zien waren in de juiste context en volgorde. Volgens mij ontkom je niet aan het gevoel dat je alles al eens hebt gezien en dat ze steeds teruggrijpen op dezelfde fragmenten. Het is wel veertig jaar geleden, zo veel werd er toen niet gefilmd.

Er werd wel genoeg gefilmd om eens andere fragmenten te laten zien hoor, zeker van de grote artiesten als The Stones, Hendrix of The Who. Ik heb al veel clipjes gezien van die artiesten op het internet, die ergens anders nooit vertoond worden. Zal wel te maken hebben met de rechten zeker?

Gemist Wanneer is de volgende aflevering. Die moet ik zeker zien!

Voor iedereen die deze uitzending gemist heeft, heb ik goed nieuws. Vanavond wordt het eerste deel van deze documentaire namelijk herhaald op BBC1.

Ik ben vorige week vergeten te kijken, maar vanavond zit ik op tijd voor de buis

En het werd zondag nog wel herhaald... Mocht je het vanavond ook vergeten, dan is er wederom zondag een herkansing.

Ik kwam er helaas te laat achter. Nou ja, pech gehad.

Ik heb het al eerder gezegd, maar ik denk dat deze serie ooit nog wel eens op dvd zal verschijnen, want op de voornoemde site staat genoeg extra materiaal om een dergelijke release te onderschrijven.
