Nou ik begin nu wel weer te twijfelen hoor! De vorige keer in Haarlem was me in ieder geval erg goed bevallen.

Band in topvorm, publiek in topvorm. Een groot feest.

Nog een stuk geschreven over het weekend voor de FB groep van het weekend.
382. Marillion weekend Utrecht 2025 (a very personal review)
Warning: this is going to be a long read. Take a coffee, tea or whatever you like and find yourself a comfy chair.
A little personal Marillion history
I heard ‘Kayleigh’ on the radio back in 1985 and bought the album ‘Misplaced Childhood’ and became a Marillion fan after the first spin. Bought all the older stuff and later ‘Clutching at straws’. Had to see them live so I traveled to a bigger town where at the VVV they sold the tickets. As elderly people know, real papery tickets, because we didn’t know what the internet was.
The queue outside the building was very long (like last weekend…). We were still outside when the message came that the gig in Ahoy Rotterdam was sold out. Not long after, the singer left the band…
Bought ‘Seasons End’ and liked it very much and the new singer was (is!) great. Saw them live twice in Ahoy in the beginning of the nineties of the previous age. First with Pendragon as opener. Didn’t know them but today I have all their records and saw them live a lot of times. Still a big fan. By the way you can hear me applauding on the live cd ‘Utrecht…the final frontier’ of Pendragon which was recorded on queen’s day 1994 in Vredenburg Utrecht. No coincidence I guess. The second time was with Enchant as opener. Like them a lot and have all their records.
Kept buying every Marillion album until there were a few that were less appealing to me. Stopped following them for a long time and stopped buying their new records until I read several very enthusiastic reviews of ‘F.E.A.R.’. Bought it and was blown away again. And later ‘An hour before it’s dark’, maybe my favorite Marillion album ever. After that I saw them live in Groningen and Utrecht. If you paid attention you know my total of Marillion live concerts is 4 before the weekend started. So as I write this the total is up to 7.
Let me sleep on it, I give you an answer in the morning
On the Facebook page of this weekend, I saw someone post something about a Marillion Mission. It appeared to be a challenge walking through the beautiful Utrecht looking for clues to be able to answer questions and solve riddles related to Marillion. The profit from the entry fee was for the Princess Maxima Centre dedicated to help kids with cancer. A very good cause too and the reason for us to take part and also have a nice day.
There we (my lovely wife since 1986 and I) went, a little walk, answer a few simple questions and take the first price. At least, so I thought. Well reality was a little different.
The riddles and questions were quite hard and often related to Marillion lyrics. I’m a music man and pay almost no attention to lyrics actually. After a 2,5 hour walk and playing Sherlock Holmes looking for clues we went to the café in Vredenburg ‘Het gegeven paard’, and spent roughly three hours to try to understand the questions, review the leads, solve the puzzles and come up with the right answers. It was hard, it was fun especially when looking confused and bewildered over a question and then after say 15 minutes you suddenly understood the clue and had the right answer. It looks so simple when you see it. Why didn’t we understand it sooner?
We wrapped everything up and handed in our answers.
The next morning my wife woke up and said we made a few mistakes and she knew the right answers when she opened her eyes. That tiny diamond on the answering sheet was a clue for the answer ‘Sierre Leone’ of course. I thought it was just for decoration.
All this reminded me of a song you might have heard of: ‘Let me sleep on it, baby baby, let me sleep on it, I give you an answer in the morning’. If only we listened to Meat Loaf better and waited until the next morning before handing in our answers.
By the way, Anoushka, a very big thank you for organising this Marillion Mission. It was very enjoyable and we had great fun!!
I saw a tower
I have nothing with towers. Well I like them but entering and going to the top is quite another thing. Something to do with a fear of heights. But on this Sunday I put my fear aside….
On this day a Dutch prog-coverband organised a free concert in a pub called ‘t Gras van de buren (The grass of the neighbors). When we arrived there was a little queue for the pub. FYI: later on more talk about queues…..
When we could go inside, the place was quickly filled. The band was called Tower of Kalla and played a set of prog-classics and later the whole of ‘Misplaced Childhood’. They were very good and during ‘Misplaced Childhood’ almost the entire audience sang along. That was very entertaining. A great afternoon with great music played by a great band. I’m sure that we are going to see them again in the future.
Thank you Gemma and the rest of the band for a wonderful afternoon!
On the last night of the weekend you sat a row in front of us. We looked and laughed at each other when we were trying to hit the high note after the yodeling part of ‘Hocus Pocus’ from the band Focus. FIY: I was lip-sinking. Better for all the people in Tivoli Vredenburg and the whole of Utrecht actually. Just to be clear: not the town but the province.
How do you do, I’m in a queue
Being Marillion weekend-newbies, on the first night we decided to go to the venue around six with doors opening at 7 o’clock. We entered the building at the site where apparently a little queue of waiting Marillion fans started. We walked towards the end of the queue. Through a door at the other side of the building, continuing outside. Then left at the corner of the building and again left at the next corner of the building where the queue kept going on. Eventually we found the end and joined the people waiting. I call them the waiters (maybe a nice topic to write a song about: ‘We are the waiters….’)
I looked behind me and saw the door which we entered the building initially. That could have been a much shorter walk if we’d paid attention.
For the following days we joined an hour earlier, before it went dark. Well waiting more than two hours in line for great music isn’t that bad? It meant waiting indoors for night two and three and just outside for the last night. About that last night, that evening there was also a K-pop band performing in the venue. Sounded tempting but we chose to go for Marillion. What do you do when standing still for 2 hours plus? A bit of talking, changing your weight from one leg to the other and keep looking if you see any movement up front in the queue. But the K-pop night added a bit of extra entertainment. The folks attending the other concert walked by the Marillion queue to enter the building and wait somewhere else. They were, not totally surprising a lot younger than the Marillion people, had in many cases a lot more hair and much more extrovert clothing. There also were two girls making a TikTok movie dancing next to the waiting line of fairly old people. That was nice. Maybe I should join TikTok and start making dancing videos while playing Marillion tunes.
When the moment we all waited for was there, we all started moving with one arm in the air showing your wristband and hurrying into the hall searching a well deserved place to sit after the long time standing up and still. Pffffff, that felt well deserved.
Q&A holadijee
When you reach a certain age, it’s a good thing to take a rest once in a while. Our musical heroes did that on the third night. But they still climbed the stage for a Q&A under supervision of the wonderful Lucy. She named the countries where people attending the weekend came from. Applause for every country of course. But the very long and warm applause for the people from Ukraine was so deserved and I will remember that especially from this night.
Well the Q&A was fun to watch and entertaining but whether we learned a lot I really can’t say. That is to say, I know now that some members of Marillion are pretty bad at throwing little balls towards the audience.
About old bladders
Marillion had three openers and on the day of rest for S, M, I, P and H, a headliner.
Opening night one was Tom Waters and he and his band played nice music, had an entertaining show and was very enjoyable.
Night two opener was Haunt the woods. Never heard of them before but I’m a fan after this concert and going to listen to their records. And what about the last acoustic song in the middle of the crowd. You could literally hear a pin drop. Goosebumps here, there and everywhere.
The Q&A evening was closed by Lazuli. Their music was also unknown to me, but I liked it. And the encore with all members playing Easter on a marimba was great!
Unfortunately the drums were very loud during the concert. Actually every kick with the bass drum was so loud, you felt the venue vibrating. I saw people leave early and I understand why. As a not so proud owner of hearing aids, a result of many hours of too loud music in my youth on my headphones and at live concerts, where standing as close as possible to the speakers was cool, I was happy that lately I only do concerts with earplugs in. But I felt sorry for people with old bladders because the vibrations of de drums must have caused frequent toilet visits. The people of Tivoli Vredenburg should probably fear December’s water bill.
Night four was opened by Euan Hammond, technician with Marillion. Not my kind of music but what a great and enthusiastic guy. I predict he will have a great future in music.
I’m sorry, but what’s the name of that song?
The first night Marillion on stage was a great evening. Sitting in the top of the theater I had to watch out for suddenly standing up because a ledge above the seats was about 2 inch lower than was good for my head. This evening the band played several songs that I heard maybe once or not at all before. That was the period that we were not connected. Still I heard a lot of good music. And of course ‘Sugar Mice’. A good start of what was to come….
Let’s all chant!
Evening number two turned out to be maybe the best concert I ever saw in my life. A great set-list, a band at their best, so was the audience. What a party! What a great sing along! And I knew all the songs except the last one where people who ended their study at the Marillion university with a degree almost shouted the roof of the building. WOW!
Please don’t lay upon the stage unless accompanied by confetti
Could the last night get any better than night number 2? It became a night to remember at the same level as night number 2. WOW! Maybe two best concerts in my life in one long weekend.
The opener was ‘Splintering heart’ and H started to sing but not on the stage. He stood in one of the boxes with seats fairly close to where we were seated. With his grey hair in the bright light of a beam. Wow, that brought up a flashback from 14 months ago in the same venue when a tall Scottish man entered the hall singing ‘Just a voice in the crowd’ on his farewell tour.
The evening was filled with longer songs full of emotions and of course famous solos of maybe the best guitar player this world has ever known. They played ‘Gaza ‘what I hoped for. The applause was very warm. This weekend we were at a great place in this world but not the whole world is like that. It makes me sad.
After the regular set the first encore was ‘Care’, maybe my favorite Marillion number of all time. The second encore ‘The leavers’ a close number two to ‘Care’.
And then the first notes of the very last song of the weekend. I later read that this was an unplanned encore. But what? That is ‘Garden Party’? It was ‘Garden Party’! Party time! And party it was. The audience went for it! So glad I didn’t go to see the K-pop band.
And after the last notes, I heard ‘Hocus Pocus’ of the Dutch band Focus. One of my all time favorite songs. Headbanging- time! Yodeling-time! Hitting a very high note-time! Please just lip-sink!
This Marillion weekend came to an end. It went past much faster than you’d think. We should do this again. Maybe PZ 2027. We tried to get tickets for Port Zeelande 2025 but unfortunately did not succeed. Hopefully this time we can travel to Zeeland.
That was our first Marillion weekend at 61 (she) an 62 (me) years of age. But remember you are never ever too old to do new things in your life. Enjoy it while you still can!
Thank you very very much:
Steve, Steve, Steve, Steve, Steve, Steve, Steve, Steve, Steve, Steve!
Ian, Ian, Ian, Ian, Ian, Ian, Ian, Ian, Ian, Ian!
Mark, Mark, Mark, Mark, Mark, Mark, Mark, Mark, Mark, Mark!
H, H, H, H, H, H, H, H, H, H!
Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete, Pete!
And thank you other members of the audience for making it one great party!
PS. Thank you Henriëtte for correcting my rusty English!
