Ook weer een beetje inhalen. 2 keer Tigermilk en 2 keer Write About Love. Stuk voor stuk schitterende liedjes toch weer. I Can See Your Future had ik lang niet gehoord, maar is prachtig. Ik moet toch weer eens Write About Love gaan luisteren, na 2010 heb ik het niet veel meer gehoord...

I Could Be Dreaming is wat meer lo-fi, maar zeker zo mooi. Wat een bijzondere teksten schreven ze, bijna elk liedje weer. Een nummer dat op het moment dat je denkt dat het wel zo afgelopen zal zijn, nog twee minuten doorgaat en alleen maar beter wordt. Top!

I Didn't See It Coming... in 2010 was de liefde voor B&S wel wat bekoeld na een paar platen die ik wat minder vond. Maar deze single kwam wel heel hard binnen. Meteen verslaafd en grijsgedraaid. Later werd het wel minder, maar het blijft een weergaloos liedje. Make me dance, I want to surrender...

I Don't Love Anyone vind ik een van de mindere liedjes van Tigermilk eigenlijk. Maar nog steeds zeer aangenaam.

If She Wants Me (2003)

If I could do just one near perfect thing I'd be happy. Mooi uitgangspunt, en dat is ze tot nu toe al meerdere malen gelukt En ook in deze song slagen ze daar wat mij betreft in. Wel een beetje een slowburner deze, hij greep me niet meteen zoals het titelnummer of Piazza.
Maar uiteindelijk is dit toch een van mijn faves op DCW geworden. Heerlijk, die 70s soul-sound, met een full falsetto van Stu. Het heeft voor mij ook heel erg een late Orange Juice-feel, de grote Schotse voorbeelden. Mooie tekst ook, en prachtig muzikaal omlijst, met vooral de bas en de Hammond-orgel die eruit springen. Al duurt hij ruim 5 minuten, het verveelt geen seconde.
Niet een van hun állerbesten, maar een erg fijne track is het zeker wel.

Geweldige song weer met geweldige lyrics! Heerlijk weer die zalige en loungy summervibe en prachtig hoe Stu hier die hoge noten haalt. Fijn die piano en orgel ook vooral en die zalige strijkers
Een topper dus, maar mist net iets scherps voor de absolute top.

En gelijk nog maar eentje van Dear Catastrophe Waitress. If You Find Yourself Caught in Love begint mooi, rustig, met alleen een verstilde piano. Maar na een minuut of zo explodeert het nummer in 70s bubblegum-style. Het had zo in The Partridges gekund. Zeker leuk, maar als B&S-songs alleen maar 'leuk' zijn heb ik er altijd net wat minder mee. De religieuze boodschap (enige ironie kan ik er niet in lezen) helpt ook niet echt. Aardig nummertje, maar voor mij wel een van de mindere op DCW.

Hier is de titeltrack van If You're Feeling Sinister. Hoe zalig en melancholisch is het begin met die kinderen op het schoolplein en de magnifieke intro met die Expectations-achtige jachtige gitaar. Mooi dat dat hier terugkomt, want qua thema is deze song daar ook aan verwant, de beslommeringen van de jeugd. Die eerste minuut is sowieso bliss met die weemoedige klanken die overgaan in die overheerlijke piano.
Stu zingt mooi over 2 niet geheel gelukkige karakters op school, waarvan er één toevlucht zoekt in een kerk, maar daar is het niet te vinden, haar eigen spiritualiteit wordt daardoor aangetast, heel herkenbaar Een mooi inkijkje en muzikaal heel mooi verwoord, de song heeft een beetje droevige en mistroostige vibe die verder goed bij het album past. Een klein groots liedje dat me erg weet te raken.

Is It Wicked Not to Care? (1998)

Een van de vele hoogtepunten op The Boy with the Arab Strap, dit keer met de lovely Isobel Campbell on leadvocals. Een archetypische Belle-song met die heerlijk "ouderwetse" vibe. Het heeft wel een Nick Drake vibe, zeker ook door de zachtheid in de zang en instrumentatie, de akoestische gitaar bijvoorbeeld, maar ook de hemelse belletjes op het eind die aan Northern Sky (of No Surprises van Radiohead, zo je wil ) doen denken. Maar ook Felt ligt op de loer, zeker met die andere, meer heldere gitaar en orgel. Echt een moment voor Isobel om de show te stelen, maar prachtig ook wanneer Stu entert in de samenzang. Naarmate de song vordert komen er steeds meer instrumenten bij zoals strijkers en fluit, mooi hoe de band dat steeds weer moeiteloos inpast en songs naar nog grotere hoogte brengt. Een mooie, mijmerende tekst ook die perfect bij de dromerige muziek past. Kortom heerlijkheid alom

Een juweeltje inderdaad, een van de beste op Arab Strap.
En ik denk wel het mooiste niet door Stu gezongen B&S-liedje.
En ook wel het mooiste door Isobel gezongen liedje, hoewel Falling from Grace van The Gentle Waves dicht in de buurt komt.

It Could Have Been a Brilliant Career (1998)

We blijven bij Arab Strap, want hier hebben we de heerlijke, bitterzoete albumopener. Een beetje understated song, zeker in het begin. Een beetje zoals I Fought in a War ook begint en langzaam opbouwt tot epische proporties. Hier is dat ook het geval, we beginnen slechts met een bas en Stu die zingt over een jonge adolescent en missed opportunities. Maar al snel volgt een fijne akoestische en een slide guitar. Een fijne en zachte ritmesectie, de piano doet ook lekker mee en geeft weer zo'n fijne oldschool vibe, niet zo gek want op Spotify volgde bij mij na deze song Pink Moon van Nick Drake Volgens Allmusic doet Isobel ook mee in de samenzang vanaf halverwege, maar ik denk toch echt Stevie te horen Anyway een erg fijne song en mooi om het album mee te beginnen.

Jonathan David (2001)

Een losse single uit 2001 en als zodanig dus ook op de Push Barman compilatie te vinden. Maar wat een heerlijke 3 minuten durende non stop feestje is dit . De eerste song in de Belle-discografie waarop Stevie de leadzang voor zijn rekening neemt. We beginnen al meteen met dat erg fijne pianowerk dat een wat jazzy sfeertje neerzet. Het is niet Stevie's beste zang, maar ik vind het hier wel passen. Als de orgel en Stu mee gaan doen in het refrein krijgen we een soort Zombies-sfeertje, fijn zomers ook . Verderop, na weer een piano-intermezzo doet ook Isobel mee en hebben we zalige triozang. De tekst is gebaseerd op de bijbelse figuren Jonathan en Koning David en een referentie naar een ander bijbels figuur die vanwege David's jaloezie naar het oorlogsfront werd gestuurd. Maar vooral...een erg fijne song

Judy and the Dream of Horses (1996)

Hier is de erg fijne afsluiter van If You're Feeling Sinister. Een erg melancolische song over Judy, een rebels meisje dat triestig werd en vasthield aan een bepaalde droom die ze had over paarden, waar dit lied dus ook over gaat . Een vrij simpel lied, zeker tot halverwege met die akoestische gitaar en later kinderlijke fluit.
Vanaf halverwege gaat het wat meer los met die trompet en een wat uitgelatener sfeer en dan wordt het ook een erg goede song, zeker wanneer Stu de dream of horses bezingt.
