Welkom beste mensen, bij dit wekelijkse baken van (muziek)liefde in tijden van corona (*vrij naar Gabriel Garcia Marquez). Vreemde tijden leveren verrassende lijsten, aldus onze opperlijstmeester Fred. Verrassend is in ieder geval de nummer 1, geleverd door de band die zich over de afgelopen jaren heen heeft ontwikkeld van band die neigde naar imitatie van mijn favoriete band, tot eentje met een sterk eigen geluid. Hun nieuwe single was tot nu toe onder mijn radar gebleven, maar deze week springen ze brutaal van 15 naar 1, daarmee Billies volgende streak onderbrekend. Ik heb hem even geluisterd en ik snap jullie; een sfeervol nummer dat begint met een typisch stemmig geluid, om halverwege open te breken met frivool pianospel - ik gooi hem in mijn eigen Trending Tunes.
Daarachter zakt Billie ineens naar 3. The Strokes blijven in de top 3 - ik ga geen grap maken over collectieve slechte beslissingen - terwijl Sports Team in de zesde week hard wegzakt naar het randje van de top 10. Phoebe en Eefje stijgen met stip in de top 10, terwijl wij de hoogste van onze nieuwe binnenkomers al op 8 vinden - de eerste van 8 in totaal + 1 re-entry. Onder de 8 nieuwe binnenkomers zit een goed aantal absolute persoonlijke favorieten van mij, ik dank jullie daarvoor! Tot slot uiteraard ook een warm welkom aan nieuwkomer deze week: stoepkrijt!

Nieuwe binnenkomers:
Waxahatchee - Can't Do Much
Ik was nog blijven steken bij de vorige single van Waxahatchee (gezondheid!), Lilacs, maar zoals wel vaker waren jullie mij weer eens te snel af. Nieuwe single Can't Do Much pakt gewoon een entree in de top 10! Qua geluid is er weinig nieuws onder zon; prima wegdroomindie voor ergens bij een kampvuur - of in de zon bij een beekje kennelijk, want de band is vernoemd naar een beek in Alabama, die weer ongetwijfeld zijn naam heeft te danken aan de Native American die daar leefden. Voor deze stroom aan nutteloze feitenkennis mogen jullie mij later bedanken.
Bicep - Atlas
Een steviger stuk kost krijgen we deze week als tweede nieuwe binnenkomer. Het Noord-Ierse dansvloerduo brak een aantal jaar door, o.a. met deze erg fijne remix van Dominica en het succesvolle debuutalbum. 3 jaar na dato zijn ze terug met spierballenvertoon in de vorm van nieuwe single Atlas - en die stelt zeker niet teleur. Met een lekker traag ritme, bezwerende vocals, pitchy synths en 'in-your-face'-beat hebben de boys zeker weer een floorfiller-by-the-numbers hun studio uit laten vliegen. Ik krijg spontaan zin om te gaan raven.
Yves Tumor - Kerosene!
Het gaat hard met ons Yfke. Vorige single Gospel for a New Country werd Song van de Maand februari en volgens velen is nieuwe single Kerosene! nog beter. Volgens panjoe is dit zelfs het beste nummer van dit jaar - tot nu toe. Zover wil ik niet gaan, maar dat dit een groots nummer is, durf ik wel toe te geven. Ik zie dit heel goed passen richting het einde van een set, voordat het nog één keer echt losgaat - meeslependheid troef.
Porridge Radio - Sweet
Een van de grootste hypes van dit moment is Porridge Radio. Daar zijn jullie nu ook achter, gezien de dubbele nieuwe binnenkomer van deze week. De muziek is een blend van allerlei indierockelementen van de afgelopen 40 jaar, maar het resultaat in de vorm van album Every Bad is onderhoudend. Sweet is een van de eerste nummers op dit album en balanceert fijn op de scheidslijn van krankzinnigheid, fulminerend in een krachtige explosie op 2/3e van het nummer.
DMA's - Life Is a Game of Changing
Een Australische band die doorbrak door heel hard op Oasis te proberen te lijken - inclusief optreden in trainingspakken. Op hun nieuwe single Life Is a Game of Changing verkennen ze een andere muzikale hoek van hun imaginaire hometown Manchester - zeg de Hacienda anno 1989. Helaas doen ze dat met dezelfde inspiratieloze zang als in hun voorgaande Oasis-vorm, wat het geheel een beetje matte indruk geeft. Desondanks komen ze deze week opnieuw binnen in onze lijst.
Perfume Genius - On the Floor
Perfume Genius is typisch zo'n artiest die ik tot nu toe alleen in de context van Musicmeter ben tegengekomen. Hij stond in mijn gedachte altijd garant voor licht quirky, introverte indiepop. Dat beeld werd al flink verstoord door de sterke, elektronische single Eye in the Wall van vorig jaar. Nieuwkomer On the Floor is weer een ander verhaal - eigenlijk gewoon een bonafide, niets-aan-de-hand popnummer. Klinkt zeker niet verkeerd, maar de vraag is of dit zal beklijven.
Porridge Radio - Circling
De tweede nieuwe binnenkomer van onze papvrienden is wat rustiger en conventioneler, maar tegelijkertijd ook wel het betere nummer, in mijn bescheiden mening. Dit is typisch zo'n indie-slowburner, die langzaam ontluikt en op je groeit, totdat je beseft dat het toch best wel een goed nummer is. Ik tip deze alvast voor de Song van het Jaar 2020-finale.
Roman Flügel - Garden Party
Jaaaaa! Als we het dan toch hebben over het beste nummer van dit jaar, tot nu toe; ik ben blij dat al mijn geplug heeft geleid tot binnenkomst van deze heerlijke zomerse houseparel! Aangezien de kans best aanwezig is dat je deze zomer niet op een festival zal staan, geef ik je een gratis tip om een placebo-festivaleffect te creëren. Pak een laatste zonnestraal in je tuin, op je balkon of voor je voordeur (houd wel 1,5m afstand!), doe je ogen dicht, zet deze keihard aan en laat je meevoeren. You're welcome
Bright Eyes - Persona Non Grata
Ok Conor Oberst, je had me bij de doedelzak. Dat is waarschijnlijk een afwijking van mij, maar we kunnen niet ontkennen dat onze depri bard met zijn eerste nieuwe werk als Bright Eyes in 9 jaar een bijzonder sfeervol nummer heeft afgeleverd. Mooi contrast in emotie ook met de vorige nieuwe binnenkomer. Ik gun beide een hoge notering in onze lijst.

Ik gun iedereen altijd het beste maar heel wat nummers lijken inmiddels weer voortijdig aan hun einde te komen: gevolg van een bom- en bomvolle hitlijst, vol met uitsluitend prachtige muziek. En aangezien alles in een volgorde moet, komen er heel wat singles enigszins bekaaid van af.
Dat neemt allemaal niet weg, dat er sowieso weer twee geweldige songs deze week zijn afgeleverd, die van de Strokes dus en ook een grandioze Slow Readers Club.
De andere drie zijn ook prachtig, Highly Suspect uiteraard bekend, de Psychedelic Furs gedegen en de Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever met de opvolger van Cars in Space.
Tot nu toe prima muziekjaar, 2020. Dat kan ons in ieder geval niet worden opgenomen. Als iedereen nu maar gewoon z'n hits blijft schrijven...

Week 15
- Een nieuw album van The Strokes en hun laatste single komt binnen op 2. Heerlijke track weer en ben ook erg blij met het nieuwe album.
- De tweede single van Phoebe Bridgers' nieuwe album vind ik nog beter dan haar eerste single. Iets meer uptempo ook. Ook de clip is leuk. Ik las ergens dat ze die eigenlijk in Japan wou opnemen, maar dat gaat moeilijk in deze tijd dus plaatste ze een groot green screen.
- Tenslotte een erg vrolijke en hoopvolle single van Typhoon. Word ik erg vrolijk van.

week 15 van 2020 - vorige week en eigenlijk de hele week dacht ik dat ik een andere nummer 1 zou hebben - maar na het draaien van de hele top 4 vanochtend heb ik dat toch nog even uitgesteld en staat Best Coast al voor de 7e week op 1..
Wel vijf binnenkomers waarvan een die ik nog maar een dag ken.
Hoogste is van The Beths, vorig jaar geweldig op BKS maar in mijn top 40 heb ik ze veel te weinig credit gegeven. Deels doordat ik ze wat laat leerde kennen en deels doordat de singles in 2018 al uitkwamen voor ik hier begon met m'n weeklijsten. Dit is gewoon een heerlijk liedje in Beths stijl. Meer graag.
Laura Marling is een stuk serieuzer; haar nieuwe album over een fictieve dochter kwam gister uit en dat klinkt toch wel weer aangenaam. Ik vind haar over het algemeen wel meer een album- dan singlesartiest (ondanks dat ze regelmatig opduikt in mijn jaarlijstjes voor zaaf) dus kijken hoe dit nummer het gaat doen.
Something Leather verdwijnt met hun vorige en komt alweer met de nieuwe, opnieuw het bekende geluid van garagerockachtige singer/songwriter met veel ruimte voor het electrische orgel.
Phoebe Bridges bleef met haar vorige een beetje in niemandsland zweven, wel ok maar toch net niet in de lijst, nu is er een nieuwe en dat is geen twijfel. Meteen in de lijst ondanks dat ik nauwelijks een dag ken. Dit is wel waar ik haar het best in vind, wat meer pop/rock dan echte singer/songwriter.
Missy Higgins is een australische singer-songwriter die al een poos meegaat, is al toe aan haar 8e ofzo album. De laatste paar albums van haar vind ik zeker ok en de nieuwe single past ook prima in mijn lijst.

Week 2 van mijn persoonlijke hitlijst met vijf nieuwe binnenkomers en geen afvallers. Dat brengt het totaal op 15 liedjes. Over maximaal een paar weken heb ik dan een mooie top 20 staan, zoals het hoort.

In het lijstje van deze week komen drie gevestigde namen binnen; na wat vaker luisteren komt Waxahatchee dan toch de lijst binnen. Ook de nieuwe single van The Blinder, die al in de lijst staan, komt binnen. De derde is Kaleo, de IJslanders die in 2016 al grote successen hadden. En de nieuwe naam is CYNN; zangeres uit Groningen, hoorde het voorbijkomen op Kink en het heeft wat weg van the xx, of van het werk van een van mijn favoriete Nederlandse zangeressen, Chagall.

Zóveel stukjes die doen denken aan andere nummers/artiesten in de laatste single van The Strokes, maar ondertussen wel een heel lekker nummer. Stond de hele week op repeat en komt binnen op 1. Het album heb ik nog maar één keertje in z'n totaliteit beluisterd.
Niet in mijn lijst: The Slow Show - als het een instrumentale band betrof, zouden ze een stuk meer kans maken, maar die ontiegelijk slaapverwekkende stem en het meestentijds niet zingen maar praten maken een hoop stuk.

Ineens twee keer corona in mijn top 100: op 1 de Spaanse versie van 'artiesten nemen samen een single op voor een goed doel', maar dan wel erg goed. Het is een cover van een nummer dat ik in de originele versie in 1988 gemist had en dat ik helaas te laat ontdekte om nog in mijn top 100 binnen te laten komen (volgens Wikipedia zat de originele versie in een film van Almodovar uit 2000, dus daar zal ik het vast van kennen). Maar mooi gedaan hoor. En de tekst is ook wel erg passend (weet ik sinds deze week via Google translate).
En mijn binnenkomer op 10 werd door Youtube aangeraden toen ik de clip van mijn nummer 1 bekeek. Ook met Quarantaine in de titel, maar daar gaat het niet over. Het gaat hier om een nummer uit 2011 dat ik destijds geheel gemist heb, hoewel de band mij toen niet onbekend was (Calle 13, Residente is het gezicht van die band). Het nummer is een ode aan Latijns-Amerika en is bijzonder mooi. Het origineel is misschien nog wel beter, ook wat de clip betreft.

Vier nieuwe binnenkomers deze week, waarvan Holly Humberstone voor het eerst haar voet over de drempel zet van mijn lijst. Of het nummer nog veel hoger gaat komen dan plek 20 moet de komende week gaan blijken, maar 'Falling Asleep At the Wheel' is te fijn om alleen in de tiplijst te houden.
