Alex the Astronaut is terug met Growing Up, haar eerste nieuwe werk na haar fantastische debuutalbum. Sea Girls brengen met Hometown alweer een derde fijne nieuwe single uit. Wake Me Up van Foals wordt nog steeds beter en komt toch nog voorzichtig de lijst binnen en ook de laatste single van Pip Blom stapt de drempel over.

nieuw:
- bij Marengo staat toch echt '2021' op mijn digitale single, maar nu kom ik er dan toch achter dat het een ouder nummer (1986) is dat nu als single wordt uitgebracht om een verzamelaar met Spaanse balearic/synth pop te promoten. Mooi staaltje cratedigging van de samenstellers, want het is een heerlijke trage afterparty plaat.
- Afgelopen 2 weken ben ik 4 keer naar de bioscoop geweest, een screening op IFFR nagelaten de eerste keer sinds januari 2020. De beste soundtrack van wat ik gezien heb is ongetwijfeld die van The French Dispatch, inclusief de bijbehorende plaat van Jarvis Cocker. Hier covert hij met Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier op fraaie wijze Dalida's Paroles, Paroles.
- Producer Mulú en zangeres Letrux leveren een fijne Braziliaanse slow jam op, heerlijk schuifelen op fijne beats.
- Arp Frique's Baba Love zou je in een DJ-set er zo achteraan gooien, als het tempo iets omhoog mag. Ook een heerlijk tropische plaat, zelfs al is het uit het brein van een Nederlandse producer ontsproten.
- Pictish Trail zei mij niets, maar de zang hier lijkt zo ontzettend veel op die van Ian McCulloch (Echo & The Bunnymen) dat ik mezelf maar heb wijsgemaakt dat dit een nieuw project van hem is. Django Django heeft het origineel mooi verbouwd en dat is dan ook gelijk hun eerste fatsoenlijke wapenfeit in een jaar of 5, want hun eigen singles zijn helaas niet veel bijzonders meer.
- Rats on Rafts blijft na hun 'Tokyo Music Experience' hangen in het land van de rijzende zon met Osaka. Vertrouwd geluid en hopelijk de voorbode van een nieuw album.

Het gebeurt niet vaak dat een artiest/bandlid overlijdt terwijl hij al in mijn top 20 genoteerd staat, maar deze week was dat helaas toch het geval. David Langdon, zanger van Big Big Train, overleed afgelopen vrijdag door een ongeluk. Made from sunshine ging ik al steeds beter vinden, maar door de extra aandacht stijgt hij ook nog wat meer.
Verder drie sterke binnenkomers, en ook nog enkele in de wachtkamer (die is bij mij gewoonlijk leeg). Gevolg is ook dat 8 weken het langst genoteerd is, en ik durf wel de stelling aan dat er nooit (in de afgelopen 45 jaar) een top 20 is geweest waarin de langst genoteerde minder dan 8 weken had.
Guns for hire van Woodkid komt uit de Arcane soundtrack en is schaamteloos melancholiek en dramatisch.

Ai, is dat ooit voorgekomen sinds 1981. U2 met een single niet hoger dan eindstation 37. Hm.
En volgens mij hebben de Sunset Sons heel erg goed geluisterd naar Michael Kiwanuka's Love & Hate dan wel een erg goed idee een beetje "gestolen". Maar ik ben natuurlijk geen deskundige.

Dan zit er een groot verschil tussen Marillion (1981) en Yes (1968) inzake vasthouden van eigen muzikale waarden en tradities. Waar Marillion altijd nog enige spanning en sensatie voor de luisteraar bewaart, is Yes daar inmiddels vrijwel in het geheel daarvan ontdaan. Een album vol red je dan ook niet. Een enkele single wil dan nog wel eens aardig overkomen. Het is goed bedoeld, niets mis met de productie. Maar we hebben spannender tijden meegemaakt met de band. Kerst nadert wel snel, meer kan ik er niet aan beloven.

Dan de leukste band van de week, komt toch weer eens uit België. Als je jezelf Eno noemt, weet je zeker dat een fiks aantal mensen je toch aanklikken om even te luisteren. Nee, het gaat niet over Brian Eno, de vermaarde ex Roxy Music legende die óók als beroemd artiest onder de naam Eno door het leven gaat/ging.

Het gaat hier om een jonge band, met alleraardigste en opbeurende mix van pop/rock/indie. En als je dat goed doet, heb je gewoon een leuke single gemaakt.

De Top 5 van de nieuwste Afrekening is vrijwel onveranderd, maar daaronder wordt wat lekkers gekookt.
5 welbekende namen maken entree en 1 voor mij nieuwe, maar ook die smaakt. Geen opvallende exits, wel waren Adele en EarthEater te snel de zij-uitgang gewezen. Dit is Nr 47 van jullie eigen Afrekening.

NIEUW onder de loep:
09. Beach House - Superstar
Vier lijsten zijn verantwoordelijk voor de hoogste entry. 4 topposities maken precies 80 punten, Als dat geen voorteken is. Nieuw dubbelalbum wordt gereleased door met tussenpose van een maand, 4 EP’s uit te brengen. Deze fragmentatie geeft direct al de gewenste reuring , want wat is dan de actuele singel. De titelsong of gewoon beste liedje? Democratisch is blijkbaar gekozen voor beide. En wat klinkt de koningin van de DreamPop vertrouwd lekker, door terug te gaan naar het succes van TeenDream & Bloom. En nu maar hopen dat elke EP zijn eigen sound gaat krijgen.
8 December worden al weer 4 songs in een baan om de aarde gebracht.

10. Elbow - Six words
De broertjes Potter en zanger Guy maken vanuit Manchester al 2 decennia mooie muziek, maar helaas heb ik er nooit een klik mee gekregen. Vermoedelijk is alleen vakkundige gemaakte klanken niet voldoende, er mist een rafelrandje of het is gewoon te netjes. Het blijft toch raadselachtig, want stadsgenoten the Slow Show maken toch vergelijkbare muziek, maar weten altijd wel een twist toe te voegen of te verbazen.

23. Porcupine Tree - Harridan
8 minuten voegde ik toe aan de spotify lijst, de 1ste tonen: een spetterende bassolo. Vroegâh had je van die supergroepen; een verzameling uitmuntende muzikanten die nog een keer bij elkaar komen om hun kunne te tonen. Daar doet het aan denken. Steven Wilson & Co. komt als voorproef van reünie album en tour met een alles samenvoegend epos in een duivelse mix van ontelbaar aantal rockgenres met Jazz, Speed, Prog & Hard, waarbij naast de basriffs het drumwerk indruk maakt.

24. Foals - Wake Me Up
Na zo veel muziek geweld is afkoeling gewenst en DE lijst doet waar die goed in is: Afwisseling.
Na Porcupine Tree klinkt Foals als een simpel niemendalletje. En Wakker maken was ook niet echt nodig.
Zit nog na te shaken.

29. Franz Ferdinand - Billy Goodbye
In mijn paspoort staat ‘Ferdinand’, dus dat schept een band. maar De tijden van ‘Take Me Out’ liggen in een ver verleden. En het siert ze om niet in herhaling te willen treden. Nog steeds in het kader van even bijkomen gaat BillyGoodbye mijn ene oog in en andere oor weer uit.

25. Lil Ugly Mane - Porcelain Slightly
DE weekverrassing zit (nog) achter in de lijst. “Lil Ugly” verraad natuurlijk n hiphop deun, maar dat vooroordeel kan direct overboord bij eerste beluistering. Zonder deze pres.taak was ik vast niet getriggerd, maar ondertussen zit ik een heel album te beluisteren van Travis Miller en ik weet al dat de singel pas de laatste track zal zijn. Super creatieve sound en als hij buiten de lijntjes kleurt, ga ik zo mee.
aerobag is zo te zien de aanstichter, opgepakt door AstroStart en Mausie . Well done !

Stormachtige 30

Fishbach is terug. In 2017 had ze een MuMeAfrekening-hitje met Un autre que moi. Nieuwe single Masque d'Or grijpt weer terug op de vertrouwde sound. Franstalig, zwoel, funk, disco. Check, check, check, check.

Verder klimt Plant Life van Parquet Courts naar 1. Wat een dijk van een song is dat toch met die heerlijke vele minuten durende outro en die funky Afrikaanse sound. Die mag van mij onbeperkt doorgaan. Superstar van Beach House stijgt naar 3.

Ik ga fan worden van Yard Act.

De EA Top 50. De top is (tegen mijn gewoonte in) bijzonder standvastig: de top 3 zit al vier weken vast en Gang of youths staat met 'The man himself' al zes weken bovenaan. Gang of youths is voor mij de ontdekking van het jaar en 'The man himself' is een meeslepend nummer over een man die zijn kinderen ziet opgroeien en dat relateert aan zijn relatie met z'n eigen vader. Daaronder de powerpop van Feeder en de stadiongalmer van Biffy Clyro. Onder de top 3 gebeurt gelukkig nog genoeg, met zeventien binnenkomers. Voor de liefhebbers: die zeventien variëren -zoals gebruikelijk- van Americana tot nu-R&B en van indie pop tot countryrock.

De hoogste nieuwe is de wat mij betreft leukste kleur van de Staat. Ondanks de titel ook gewoon weer de nieuwe single van Pip Blom in mijn lijst. Anika met Change had ik in de zomer gemist bij Herman, gelukkig heeft Mausie 'm recent opgepakt en staat het nu ook in mijn lijstje. Ze werkte eerder samen met leden van Portishead en dat is ook wel te horen. En de bloedrode schoentjes komen ook nog schoorvoetend binnen.

Dan kom je de werkweek wel weer door

week 48 van 2021 waarin ik verblijd werd met het nieuws dat Just Mustard volgend jaar op BKS gaat spelen, die waren net vorige week binnenkomer in de top 10. Nu op 1? Nou nee even geduld, ik ben nog niet toe aan vervanging voor Peaness. Ook Beach Bunny staat op BKS en die stijgen ook m'n top 3 in. Hoezo favoriete festival... Deze week 6 binnenkomers waarvan vijf voor mij zeer aansprekende namen.
Hazel English scoort altijd goed bij mij en haar nieuwe is ook weer een heerlijk uptempo, beetje 60s aandoend nummer. Zo hoor ik haar graag.
En ook Maita doet het altijd goed, haar vorige zakt net de top 3 uit en nu is de nieuwe er al weer. Op basis van de laatste single gaat haar nieuwe album meer uptempo worden dan de vorige en dat bevalt voorlopig ook erg goed.
Lucy Gaffney kwam gister met een nieuwe single, meestal wacht ik dan een week met dit binnen laten komen maar deze maakte meteen zoveel indruk dat ik daar alvast een plaatsje voor maak (sorry Amber). Heerlijk.
Ook de zweedse Linn Koch-Emmery komt met een nieuwe (en het album is er inmiddels ook). Ook bij haar bekend recept, midtempo nummer met wat extra aanzet voor het refrein met gedragen zang
Eliza heeft met haar Delusionals al regelmatig top 3 gestaan, de nieuwe klinkt weer lekker fris maar iets minder uptempo dan haar hoogst scorende, mischien meer richting dreampop (Hatchie?). Toch wel gewoon goed.
Why Bonnie is wel een nieuwe naam, een band uit Texas via Get in Her Ears. Een lekker dromerig singersongwriter pop/rock nummer.
