- Ross From Friends is onderhand wel bekend bij de danceliefhebbers hier, volgens mij. Geniale artiestennaam, fijne garagetrack ook weer. Die break halverwege en de baslijn die erna weer binnenvalt... smullen.
- Money van Feater klinkt een beetje als een Afrikaanse houseplaat, door de zang en percussie. Maar zoals wel meer exotische klinkende muziek de laatste tijd komt het verrassend genoeg uit de koker van een Oostenrijkse producer.
- Katy Kirby's Traffic is een fijn indieliedje zoals er zoveel zijn, maar op de een of andere manier vind ik dit een heerlijke oorwurm. Grappig ook dat ze in een verder redelijk conventioneel liedje ook een klein beetje autotune niet schuwt.
- The Wants is een ontdekking via SvhJ. Blijkbaar een afsplitsing van BODEGA, die jaren terug nog wel eens mijn lijst haalden. Dit klinkt een beetje mathrocky, beetje Foals. Lekker nummer. Wel al een beetje oud, dus ik houd hem wel buiten de top 20.
- Mdou Moctar is toearegblues uit Niger, liefhebbers van Bombino en Tinariwen weten hier wel raad mee.
- Molly Burch en Wild Nothing triggeren altijd wel mijn aandacht; dit is een heerlijke synthpopkraker. Van Wild Nothing is ondertussen ook een fraaie verzamelaar te maken, wel jammer dat dit soort pop niet wat populairder is. Kan zo op de radio zou je toch denken.
- De Witte Kunst: fascinerende track dit, het klinkt wat fout en vals, maar de knulligheid is ook wel erg charmant, zeker in combinatie met de geweldige 80's productie. Zelfs een saxofoon wordt niet geschuwd.

De droptijd voor Afrekeningsweek 5, eindigd vandaag om 22:00
Maar elke hitlijst die eerder binnen druppelt is meer dan welkom.

blur8 wil je mijn lijst van vorige week meenemen? Ik kom er niet aan toe vanavond.

Hardline staat voor de tweede week bovenaan en zou hier nog wel eens een tijdje kunnen blijven staan. Middle Kids en The Lathums sluiten aan op het podium, maar met Black Honey, Foo Fighters en Baby Queen komen er nog drie podiumkandidaten de top tien binnen gestormd. Queen's Pleasure maakt in de tweede week ook een reuzensprong naar plek 15.




Vijf nieuwe binnenkomers deze week, maar alle vijf bij de onderste tien. Geen nummers die er enorm bovenuit schieten, behalve dan misschien bovenstaande van de uit Long Beach, New York afkomstige Family Dinner. Weezer dropte redelijk plots het album OK Human vorige week en All My Favorite Songs is hiervan de single. Verder nieuwe binnenkomers van Somebody's Child en Pale Waves (waarvan de volgende single ook alweer in de tiplijst staat) en gaan we de 'Russische Beer' te lijf met de zomerse klanken van Cassia.

Laat de Afrekening maar een lichtbaken zijn in de negatieve spiraal van het dagelijkse nieuws.
Daar kunnen we toch nix mee.
Mijn eigen lijst staat zoals bekend propvol met gitaargrooves, drammende drums en pakkende rifs, dan is de duik in de Afrekening een welkome afwisseling in een andere sound & taste. Bijvoorbeeld de folk van The Weather Station & en Australische pop van Middle Kids. 2 klimmers in de lijst en voorbeelden die zonder de Afrekening mij niet waren opgevallen tussen de stortvloed aan releases.
Het is echt veel: Elke week z'n 100 nieuwe titels die worden aangedragen, waarvan gemiddeld slechts 10% de gezamenlijke haalt, maar dat zijn natuurlijk wel de lichtstralen.

De new Entry's deze week:

11. Black Country, New Road - Track X
Van t snoepje van de week verwachten we a.s. vrijdag hun debuut-album. Er is geen enkele twijfel of dat gaat een release klapper worden. De basis werd al in 2019 gelegd toen ’Sunglasses’ de jaarlijst haalde met een uitdagende combi van PostPunk en FreeJazz.
Fris uit de collegebanken van Cambridge is BC,NR een septet, met ook een saxofonist en een violiste. Zanger Isaac leek niet geïnteresseerd in zangles en blèrde alles wat in m opkwam de microfoon in. Schijnbeweging blijkt nu, want Sunglasses & Track-X zijn Jing & Jang. Ofwel: Repeatmatige Soundscape met helend resultaat.
Hoor in de tekst ook nog grappige link naar collega’s Black midi.
“I got down on my knees, I told you I loved you in front of Black Midi”
Concert in Adam verplaatst van Bitterzoet naar ParadisoNoord. En JA ik zal er zijn op 17 november.

25. Squid - Narrator (ft. Martha Skye Murphy)
Een kleine stap van BC,NR naar Squid. Overeenkomsten genoeg: Ook PostP, ook Jazz invloeden. Meer dan alleen drum/gitaar/bas, want ook koper, nauwja Trompet ipv Sax. Ook een schreeuwende zanger, deze keer uit Brighton. Ook binnenkort 1ste album. Maar dan de verschillen: Op dat album geen enkele oudere song, alles nieuw en Narrator is eerste voorproef(je) van 8 minuten dat dan weer wel.
Op het podium is iedereen multi-instrumentalist. Gitaar wisseld met trompet, toetsen met percussie. Maar grote smaakmaker is Ollie de zingende drummer. Hij zit achter z’n kid, staat er vóór of erop. Ik zag het al 2 keer (Op Vlieland en In Paradiso) en zal er heus wel weer bij zijn als ze (ook) ParadisoNoord plat gaan spelen in oktober.
Enig probleem, mijn ticket-administratie is een puinhoop. Geen idee welke nieuwe datum en gewijzigde locatie horen bij bestaande barcodes of welke tickets geannuleerd zijn. Maar dat is van latere zorg, belangrijker is zicht op nieuwe avonturen vóór een podium.

24. Keleketla! - Papua Merdeka (Machinedrum Remix)
Afrobeat project met indrukwekkende lijst van gastbijdrages van o.a. Coldcut, Tony Allen & The Lani Singers. De Web-based samenwerking is ook lekker Mondiaal: vanuit Johannesburg, London, LosAngeles, Indonesia. Heel album stamt alweer van vorig jaar zomer, maar de recentere remixes zijn inderdaad nog wat frisser.

26. (RE) The Strokes - The Adults Are Talking
Dacht dat deze lijst zich concentreerde op recente muziek, maar blijkbaar zijn voldoende mensen nog niet uitgeluisterd op the Strokes.

27. Baby Queen - Raw Thoughts
Bella Latham is geboren in Durban (Zuid-Afrika) maar ruim voor de Brexit en next LockDown verhuisd naar Londen. Als BabyQueen maakt ze soort grunge-pop met invloeden van Taylor Swift en The 1975. Fijn toch.

29. Fokko - Karin heeft geen Corona
Ik had plechtig beloofd het C-woord niet te gebruiken, want zelfs ik ben helemaal klaar met elk hopeloos nieuwsbericht er over. En wil er eigenlijk ook geen liedje over horen, zelfs niet van 1 minuut.

30. Arlo Parks - Caroline
Het debuutalbum van de Britse Arlo is slechts n paar dagen oud, vol met fijne rustgevende electro-soul. En aan fans geen gebrek, herman, stardust_be, RadioMad, DjFrankie, AstroStart, Vince vega, cosmic kid hielpen samen 2 liedjes de lijst in. Naast Mainsingel “Caroline” staat namelijk ‘’Hope’’ onzichtbaar op nr 33. Kijken wat samenwerking tot gevolg heeft voor weeknr 6 want dat is de gronologische volgende stop.

MuMeAfrekening - gezamenlijke weeklijst 2021 - YouTube

Squid en BCNR zijn mooie nieuwkomers, die nieuwe rock-met-van-alles-en-nog-wat stroming uit Engeland is veelbelovend. Ben in jaren niet zo enthousiast geweest over een paar rock nummers.

Ik vind die post-punk met blazers wel een beetje cliché worden, de laatste anderhalf jaar hoor je bijna niet anders meer in het genre. Maar Squid en zeker BCNR zijn wel positieve uitzonderingen (al is Track X de eerste van hun die me niet zoveel doet).

Had Papua Merdeka (Machinedrum Remix) trouwens niet al eerder in de lijst gestaan? Bij mij draait ie al 2 maanden mee en hij was al even uit toen ik hem opnam.

Squid en BCNR zijn wel de grote beloftes inderdaad, en daar mag je wat mij betreft ook Black Midi aan toevoegen. Die doen veel meer dan het post punk met blazers cliché (Squid en Black Midi gebruiken niet eens blazers). Wat ik vooral erg gaaf vind, is dat, nadat In de 00's post-punk steeds toegankelijker werd, de recente ontwikkelingen steeds meer terug lijken te vallen op de uitdagende stijl van post-punk bands uit de eind jaren '70/begin jaren '80. Bands die veel meer experimenteerden met ritmes, complexe songstructuren en indringende ambiances.

Het verschil nu is dat we leven in de internet-age, waar een hele lichting aanstormende artiesten opgroeit met muziek uit alle hoeken en gaten; grenzeloos, tijdoos en genreloos. In de muziek vertaald het zich dan ook in een smeltpot van verschillende elementen, waar je de bands soms met de uiterste inspanning hoort worstelen om het tot één geheel te krijgen. En dan is er vooral een spel van spanningsbogen dat opvalt. Benieuwd of deze lichting een ferme stempel gaat weten te drukken, ik waardeer in ieder geval de flinke ballen die ze tonen. Eigenlijk moet er eens een nieuwe benaming komen voor deze stroming, post-punk is een wat onduidelijke term geworden en dekt de lading niet echt meer.

Squid gebruikt op Narrator wel blazers, maar dat zal de gastbijdrage wel zijn.


Mooie analyse en helemaal mee eens. Deze groep bands is duidelijk anders dan wat ik maar de gladgestreken 'Joy Division/Editors'-navolgers noem (zoals Ist Ist dat hier vorig jaar goed scoorde) en waar ik na 2 keer luisteren meestal wel op uitgekeken ben. Misschien zou juist voor deze groep een ander etiket moeten komen.

De vaste bassist van Squid: Laurie Nankivell doet ook alle brass, hoofdzakelijk Trompet
ft. Martha Skye Murphy doet de gilletjes.

5 weer geweldige songs, waar de psychedelic rock weer eens genadeloos toeslaat, met King Gizzard, dat is uiteraard begrijpelijk.
De Australische psycho rockers hebben ijzersterk werk, maar laten het ook wel eens liggen. Zo heb ik de laatste twee songs laten liggen. Maar als het goed is, dan is het ook goed.

Maar de concurrentie op dat terrein neemt toe. Zo is een andere band in het genre, Lazy Eyes, en dat ook gewoon uit Sydney, Australië komt, King Gizzard met Where is my brain? net voor gebleven. Een onvoorstelbaar goede plaat, ik moet er gewoon nog even van bijkomen.

Dan is de rest ook sterk, Frank Turner probeert het eens als duo met The Lottery Winners. Voor de laatste is Turner natuurlijk een aanwinst, maar alles bij elkaar een sterk geheel. Waarbij Turner gelukkig ook stevig uit de hoek komt, zoals dat bij hem hoort. Start again, één van zijn motto's.

Imelda May beleeft bij mij in ieder geval haar debuut. Helemaal alleen heeft ze de plaat niet gemaakt, moet eerlijk worden gezegd. De aanwezigheid van Noel Gallagher en Ronnie Wood (de combinatie!) maakt het ook hier een fraaie song.

Waar hoor je de blazers herman, want ik heb wat moeite met ze te identificeren op Narrator. Zijn het niet zwaar gemanipuleerde gitaargeluiden die klinken als de schelle tonen van blazers? In de clip zie je ze ook geen blazers bespelen. Klopt overigens wel wat Blur8 zegt, Laurie Nankivell heb ik op live-opnames een trompet te voorschijn zien toveren.
