Ik weet niet hoe dat wekelijks gaat (of eigenlijk wel) maar ik ben deze week weer eens weggeblazen door de nieuwe tracks die in mijn nieuwe lijst staan.

Het verhaal over Noel Gallagher, Yes en Sparks zal bekend zijn. Declan Welsh is ook al weer enige tijd een graag geziene gast. Maar elke keer denk ik dat het wel even wat rustiger zal worden en dan dienen zich bands als Gulps en Rolla zich aan. Hoeveel goede muziek kan een mens nog hebben?

Hoe dan ook, Rolla is een nieuwe band uit Manchester, van Gulps (een paar jaar ouder) lijkt het er op dat er Italianen en Spanjaarden rondlopen maar ik kon er in de gauwigheid verder niets van vinden. Beide bands hebben geen albums op onze site staan.

Dat hoeft dus niks te zeggen, hun muziek blaast je gegarandeerd van je stoel. Ik had het onze geliefde Koning vandaag graag willen aanbieden, in plaats van de vele andere dingen die hij voor zijn verjaardag moest ontvangen. Maar mij wordt uiteraard niets gevraagd. Naar welke muziek zou hij eigenlijk luisteren? Na zijn Ajax onthulling had best wel eens naar de muzikale smaak van onze majesteit mogen worden gevraagd. Wat hij nu echt leuk vind, wat hij 's avonds als hij moe van al dat werk in zijn werkkamer zit, zelf opzet. Of hij een moderne installatie met veel vermogen heeft staan om alle bedienden ook eens van een goeie rocksong te voorzien.

En of Maxima in de jaren '90 ook naar grunge luisterde.
Dat vind ik interessante vragen. Dan hadden we Koning Willem jaarlijks een nieuw album naar eigen smaak (en eentje ter lering en vermaak) kunnen aanbieden. Dat zou ook gelijk leuk zijn voor de platen business. Mijn vragen worden nooit gesteld, de traditionele achterban mocht er eens wat van denken. Het kan natuurlijk ook dat onze Koninklijke Hoogheid een allerbelabberdste smaak heeft.

Maar ook dan lijkt mij, uit opvoedkundig oogpunt, nieuw werk van Gulps en Rolla van harte aan te bevelen. Ook goed voor het huwelijk, Majesteit.

VNV Nation komt dubbel binnen. De single Before the Rain is van eind februari, mogelijk vijgen na Pasen? Gelukkig is er ook de kersverse worp Wait, die meteen doorschiet naar de TOP 20. Toppertje hoor!

The Drums ben ik eeuwig dankbaar voor Lets Go Surfing, een aanstekelijkheid die ze nooit meer konden evenaren. Toch wist I Want It All zich op enkele dagen tijd in mijn hoofd te nestelen, goed op weg om de tweede favoriete song van deze band te worden aan deze kant van het scherm.

Verder nog lekkere dance van Vitalic met Disco Boy (opgepikt bij iamsander), ORAI met Veidai Ilgi en Underworld met and the color red. Thomas Headon, die een jaar geleden wist te plezieren met How Do I Know?-, heeft ook een nieuwe. Net als Loïc Nottet die met Addictocrate z'n gelijknamige aankomende plaat voorstelde.

Het album van Chappaqua Wrestling draait hier (bijna) onafgebroken op de repeat. daar is op MuMe nog niet veel van zichtbaar en dat blijkt mijn eigen inschattingsfout te zijn zit al weken op de verkeerde singel. Dus switch van Wide Asleep naar Need You More.

Electronische Punkrock van Hallan gaat weer een trede hoger, geinspireerd op NewOrder, maar daardoor juist overdadig lekker.

week 17 van 2023 waarin de top 5 alleen onderling een beetje schuift, dat zal volgende week wel anders zijn als je naar de rest van de top 10 kijkt. Een heel hoge binnenkomer dus van in totaal 5 nieuwe.
Lizzie Esau heeft met haar vorige singles veel succes bij mij gehad - 2x #1 en 1x #3 - en de nieuwe gaat dat ook zeker doen. Heerlijk pop/rock nummer in haar bekende stijl.
Alaska Reid staat met haar vorige nog in de lijst, zakt net de top10 uit. De nieuwe begint wat meer uptempo, door de zang die soms richting fluisteren gaat meteen herkenbaar als Alaska.
Venus Grrls hebben 2x dicht bij de top 10 gestaan maar nog nietgehaald. Eens kijken hoe dat met de nieuwe gaat, schijnbaar overigens een opnieuw opgenomen nummer wat oorspronkelijk uit 2021 komt.
Thermal stond begin dit jaar nog op 1, dat zal lastig worden voor de nieuwe al is het wel weer gewoon een goed noisy alt rock nummer
Pony maakt pop/rock met dreampop invloed, klinkt altijd goed. Haar vorige is net zo'n beetje uit de lijst, de nieuwe mag er nu in.



(nog) geen clip maar vond deze live opname, toch mooier dan alleen een single-hoes.

Het komt niet vaak voor dat ik een ladder mis bij Song van het Jaar, maar ladder 4 van februari is langs mij heen gegaan. Vervolgens trof Meshell Ndegeocello een ijzersterke ladder in de halve finales. Ze belandde midden tussen Maruja en PoiL in de playlist waardoor het mij gesmaakt moet hebben als een flauw merlotje tussen twee peperige gerechten. Of ik heb zitten slapen. Alsnog dank voor de nominatie Coma Cat, want dit nummer is meer dan goed. Ik moet haast wel hebben zitten slapen.
Ik moest even wennen aan deze Jessie Ware, maar Begin Again is behoorlijk gegroeid. Albumopener That! Feels Good! voelt trouwens ook goed.
Verder valt in bovenstaand lijstje op dat er een behoorlijke inbreng is van onze Poolse kameraden. Astigmatic Records is lekker bezig. Dat album van Szymon Burnos mag er ook zijn. Daar staat naast Bubbles meer goeds op. Bounce 4 AM bijvoorbeeld.
Eeuwig zonde dat MEULE part 1 en 2 niet gewoon samen heeft gevoegd. Wat een gruwelijk monster was No Couchette dan geweest... Zie ook de KEXP performance. Nu alsnog heerlijk en part 3 in mijn lijstje.
Danny Paul Grody, voormalig gitarist van Tarentel, dan toch op 1. Light Blooms is mijn verslaving van deze weken. Uitzonderlijk effectief sferisch. Die klarinet ook... En die flegmatieke bas. Ik kijk vast uit naar het album.

Het debuutalbum van Tina Boonstra heeft een groot deel van het weekend op repeat gestaan, wat een fijn album is Circle Back, Start Again. De meest recente single maakt mede daardoor nu alsnog de sprong de Top 40 in. De spotlight is deze week echter voor een debutante; Olivia Rebecca Devine is de volledige naam van een Engelse singer songwriter die zichezelf L Devine noemt. Push It Down, heerlijk nummer en een stem waar ik blij van word.




Ook The Sha-La Lee's debuteren in mijn lijst. Het is een Belgisch-Nederlandse band met roots in bands als Millionaire, The Sore Losers en Noordkaap die na een stilte van acht jaar weer eens van zich laten horen en deze keer ben ik erbij . De laatste binnenkomer is voor Bully met Hard to Love

De 8 minuten durende trip to wonderland van Four Tet is deze week de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer in de lijst. Mooie opbouw en en een groeibriljant om maar even een cliché te gebruiken Verder ook nieuw: Confidence Man (hebben al meer leuke singles uitgebracht waarvan ik Holiday tot dusver de leukste vind) samen met Daniel Avery (check dat geweldige album Drone Logic uit 2013!). On & On (Again) staat hier al sinds vrijdag op repeat. Leuk dat ie al op 1 staat in het lijstje van Dance Lover. Verder nog nieuw de wonderschone chill klanken van Beach House en de heerlijke disco van Jessie Ware. Haar album What’s Your Pleasure heb ik helemaal grijs gedraaid. De laatste singles vond ik wel aardig, maar deze Freak Me Now vind ik de leukste. Daarom deze week ook nieuw in de Trotse 20.

Het is Zweden-boven deze week, want zij leveren de twee hoogste nieuwe binnenkomers. Voor beide artiesten is dat min of meer een comeback. The Mary Onettes is een dreampop-gezelschap dat ondanks zijn ruim 20-jarig bestaan pas 4 albums heeft uitgebracht. Ik was ze al bijna vergeten en eigenlijk leent de muziek zich daar ook wel toe. Want op het ingetogen Pearl Machine (het b-kantje van de eigenlijke single Easy Hands) begint de zang pas op een minuut voor het einde en is deze nagenoeg onverstaanbaar. In combinatie met de dromerige, sfeervolle muziek klopt dat wel. Fraai nummer.
Little Dragon is daarentegen razend actief, ook al zeker 15 jaar. Ik krijg niet het idee dat ze ooit echt een pauze hebben genomen, toch is de laatste single die ik echt leuk vond -Klapp Klapp- ook al zowat 10 jaar oud. Daarna was het vaak net-niet, maar met dit subtiel swingende Slugs of Love is het weer overtuigend raak. Zeker als er ineens een saxofoon om de hoek komt geblazen.
Cameo Blush wordt op RYM getypeerd als UK Bass / Future Garage en dan weten de liefhebbers genoeg. Veel percussie, wat mijmerende synths en een gemuteerde zanglijn. Prima dansvloermateriaal. Geraffineerd plaatje.
Nuovo Testamento is een Amerikaans-Italiaans gezelschap met een overduidelijke voorliefde voor 80s synth pop en italodisco. Een beetje oude Madonna hoor ik er ook nog wel in. Dit had ze prima in 1986 kunnen uitbrengen en dan was het een dikke classic geweest.
The New Division is een Amerikaans gezelschap dat een mix maakt van new wave en synthpop, met een snufje gitaarwerk a la New Order. Wie ooit eerder werk heeft gehoord, zal niet verrast zijn, want ze klinken eigenlijk al jaren hetzelfde.

Als ik nog op tijd ben mag mijne van vorige week ook nog een weekje mee.
