De nieuwe videoclip van Harry Styles geeft me Johnny 5 (Short Circuit) en WALL•E vibes, Het Dappere Stofzuigertje, daar val ik als een blok voor. En er mag (moet) ook eens gelachen worden, Tenacious D stelt op dat vlak niet teleur. "It's on the album!" hoor je aan het eind, dat klinkt als goed nieuws. De Eurovision inzending van Slovenië bestaat ook in 't Engels, maar Carpe Diem, goede raad trouwens, klinkt gewoon het best in de originele taal.

Ook nieuwe muziek van The Smashing Pumpkins, die De Alternatieve Hitlijst (thread) helaas nog niet gehaald heeft ... en verder nog meer glitter (en een beetje bloed) vanop het songfestival. Welke landen ze precies vertegenwoordigden heb ik niet onthouden. Piqued Jacks vond ik live niet erg goed, maar de studioversie blijft hangen, ook geldend voor enkele andere. Aan de Nederlandse vrienden, ik vond jullie inzending goed genoeg om door te gaan.

week 20 van 2023 met Lizzie eigenlijk onbedreigd op 1 al lijkt dat misschien anders. Vier binnenkomers, vooral door ruimtegebrek niet meer. De onderste helft van m'n lijst bestaat best veel uit songs die nog helemaal niet lang genoteerd staan en sommige zakken toch al (te) snel.
Om een of andere reden komen singles nadat een album uit is (en zeker als ik dat heb) moeilijk meer in mijn lijst. Salad van Blondshell staat al weken in m'n tiplijst, maar deze week kwam er een echte clip dus nu toch maar besloten het alsnog op te nemen en dan natuurlijk wel meteen hoog.
Pom heeft een paar keer top 10 gestaan bij mij maar ook een paar wat mindere singles gehad, deze nieuwe hoort echter weer bij hun beste.
Buffchick is een singer/songwriter uit New Jersey, spotify dacht dat ik dit wel leuk zou vinden, nou inderdaad. Lekkere pop/rock waar m'n lijst vaak vol mee staat.
The Beaches stonden de afgelopren 2 jaar nog op 1 en 2 bij mij, daarna hebben ze wat minder aansprekende singles gehad maar deze nieuwe klinkt toch wel weer vertrouwd goed.

Deze week 5 nieuwe binnenkomers in de Trotse 20. Hoogste binnenkomer is de dance-punk (of is het new wave disco?) van Baby's Berserk die je misschien nog kent van de single Toxic Kisses. Vond ik ook een leuk nummer, net als deze Dancing With The Kiss, met jaren 90 rave invloeden. Meer begin jaren 90 (en eind jaren 80) is de shoegaze/dreampop/Stone Roses achtige single Lost in Pink Moon van de Nederlandse band Pale Puma. Mooi sfeervol nummer. Geldt ook wel voor de nieuwe single van Nation of Language waarvan ik bijna iedere single wel goed vind, ook deze dus weer. Dan hebben we nog Night Works alias Gabriel Stebbing (zie ook Metronomy en Christine and the Queens). Deze Moving Still remix van Sweep It Out Your Hair is erg fijn. Een combi van house, italodisco en Arabische pop. Tot slot nog Braxe en Falcon die eigenlijk nooit teleurstellen. De Paul Woolford Remix maakt hun Elevation nog kruidiger en lekkerder.

Afrekening #21 in de maak. En we zijn al lekker op stoom met 25 lijsten binnen.

Het is overduidelijk de week van Foo Fighters. Rescued neemt de koppositie over en nieuwe single Over You is de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer. Tenslotte kwam gisteren het nieuws naar buiten dat Josh Freese de nieuwe drummer van de band is




De Belgische Pink Lemons debuteren in mijn lijst met het aanstekelijke Bittersweet. Queen's Pleasure is weer terug en de Nederlandse band had genoeg aan een handjevol luisterbeurten om me te overtuigen. Na het uitbrengen van een aantal covers hiervoor brengen Spanish Love Songs met Haunted weer een fijne eigen single uit. De laatste binnenkomer is voor Within Temptation met nieuwe single Wireless.

Een aangename verrassing aan de top van de Gezamenlijke: Four Tet springt in de vierde week ineens van 7 naar 1 en is de nieuwe lijstaanvoerder. Weliswaar met slechts één puntje voorsprong, maar dat mag de pret natuurlijk niet drukken. Gefeliciteerd Kieran Hebden (want zo heet deze Britse producer eigenlijk)! Four Tet bereikte in 2019 al drie keer de top 10 van de MuMeAfrekening, maar hoger dan plaats 5 (met 'Only Human', samen met KH) kwam hij nog nooit. Het sferische 'Three Drums' bereikt de toppositie nu dus wel! Daarnaast waait er deze week ook nog eens een frisse wind door de weeklijst, met maar liefst negen binnenkomers. Maar daar lees je een stukje verderop nog veel meer over.

09 Käärijä - Cha Cha Cha
Een hippe alternatieve hitlijst als de MuMeAfrekening en het platte commerciële vermaak van het Eurovisie Songfestival, dat zijn twee absolute tegenpolen, toch?! Welnee, MuMe en ESF gaan prima samen! Kijk maar eens naar de hoogste binnenkomer deze week: de Fin Jere Pöyhönen, alias Käärijä. Vorige week eindigde hij met 'Cha Cha Cha' als tweede op het Eurovisiepodium, vlak achter de Zweedse winnares Loreen. En deze week knalt Käärijä in één keer de top 10 in van onze Gezamenlijke. 'Cha Cha Cha' doet, als mijn ritmegevoel me niet in de steek laat, zijn naam geen eer aan; het is een puntige synthesizertrack met een licht rockend randje, maar op de Latin dansles zou ik er niet mee uit de voeten kunnen...

10 Grian Chatten - Fairlies
Ook nieuw in de top 10: de eerste solohit voor Fontaines D.C.-zanger Grian Chatten. Begin dit jaar stond Chatten al eens in de MuMeAfrekening genoteerd als gastzanger op de hit 'Full Way Round' van Leftfield, maar nu doet ie het helemaal in z'n eentje. 'Fairlies' is een erg prettig in het gehoor liggend gitaarwerkje, waar heel wat minder scherpe puntjes aan zitten dan aan het groepswerk van Fontaines D.C. De Ierse frontman brengt eind volgende maand zijn soloalbum uit, dat Chaos For The Fly gaat heten.

11 Josienne Clarke - Anyone But Me
Uit Brighton komt indie-zangeres Josienne Clarke. Haar nieuwe album, Onliness, is het eerste dat ze op haar eigen label uitbrengt. Iets nieuws staat er niet op: Clarke heeft het beste werk van haar vorige albums opnieuw opgenomen, gearrangeerd en geproduceerd. Om van een 'Best of' te spreken gaat in het geval van een onbekende zangeres als Josienne Clarke misschien een beetje ver, maar het geeft wel een heel goed overzicht van haar kunnen, en dat is een erg prettige kennismaking. Of zou Josienne op Onliness een TaylorSwiftje doen en op deze manier het beheer van haar muziek in eigen hand nemen? Hoe het ook zij, 'Anyone But Me' is een even fijne als indringende indie track die gaat over een obsessieve eenzijdige liefde.

14 The Last Dinner Party - Nothing matters
Een nieuwe girl group? Nee, ben jij gek, dit is een gruwelijk goede band van vijf getalenteerde muzikanten die toevallig allemaal vrouwelijk zijn. The Last Dinner Party werd in Groot-Brittannië al stevig gehypt, maar nu is er met 'Nothing Matters' dan eindelijk een debuutsingle. Hun liveshows staan bol van drama en pathetiek en daar past hun muziek, die new wave samenvoegt met glamrock, prima bij. Op basis van de concerten van the Last Dinner Party waren de verwachtingen hoog gespannen, maar die lossen ze in met het sterke, feministische 'Nothing Matters', dat al een paar weken door de weeklijst van bovengetekende dwaalde, en nu ook doordringt tot de MuMeAfrekening.

20 Nothing But Thieves - Overcome
Een hippe alternatieve hitlijst als de MuMeAfrekening en het platte commerciële vermaak van de top 40, dat zijn twee absolute tegenpolen, toch?! Welnee, MuMe en top 40 gaan prima samen! Kijk maar eens naar deze binnenkomer: de nieuwe single van vijf heren uit Southend-on-Sea. Nou is Nothing But Thieves natuurlijk niet bepaald een doorsnee top 40-band, maar toch staan ze met dit 'Overcome' al voor de vijfde keer in de Nederlandse top 40; het is zelfs Alarmschijf geworden. En om de 'Song van het jaar'-critici (met wie ik een innige haat/liefde-verhouding koester) de mond te snoeren: nee, Nothing But Thieves is niet meteen het hipste bandje in de indie-scene, maar ze weten wel verduveld goed hoe ze een prettig beluisterbare hapklare brok popmuziek moeten neerzetten, die staat als een huis.

22 Declan Welsh and the Decadent West - I don't know why
Declan Welsh is een kerel die z'n naam geen eer aandoet. Hij komt niet uit Wales, maar uit het Schotse Glasgow. Z'n band the Decadent West komt daar ook vandaan, da's wel zo prettig met carpoolen. De nieuwe single 'I don't know why' gaat in een versnellinkje lager dan hun gebruikelijke werk, maar dat is niet bepaald een aderlating. 'I don't know why' gaat over het omgaan met verlies, dus heel vrolijk wordt het allemaal niet, maar ook de shoegazige kant van Welsh is erg sterk. Het is de voorloper van het tweede album van de band, dat (pas) in september gaat verschijnen en de pakkende titel 2 mee gaat krijgen.

26 Billy Woods & Kenny Segal - FaceTime (ft. Samuel T. Herring)
Maps is het nieuwe album van de New Yorkse rapper Billy Woods. Begin deze maand kwam het uit; het is een conceptalbum over het leven van een artiest on the road. De lead single van dat album, dit 'FaceTime', maakte Woods samen met producer Kenny Segal uit Los Angeles en zanger Samuel Herring (van Future Islands) uit Baltimore. 'FaceTime' is een intelligente, inventieve track met een relaxte flow en een paar fijne blazers. En hé, horen wij daar het woord 'Utrecht' vallen? Dat gaat vast over Woods' optreden in EKKO afgelopen februari!

28 Peaking Lights - Suitcase
Gert & Hermien, Nicole & Hugo, Ike & Tina Turner, Womack & Womack, Suzan & Freek, ik schud de zingende echtparen zo uit m'n mouw. Ook Aaron Coyes en Indra Dunis horen in dat rijtje thuis, muziek makend onder de groepsnaam Peaking Lights. Ze doen het al samen sinds 2006. Muziek maken dan; hoe lang ze dat andere al samen doen is mij niet bekend. Het Amerikaanse echtpaar onmoette elkaar in San Francisco, settlede zich in Los Angeles, maar verkaste vier jaar geleden naar Amsterdam en van daaruit opereren ze nog steeds. 'Suitcase' heeft een onmiskenbare New Order-look&feel over zich, maar in de vocalen weten deze Saskia & Serge van de psychedelische elektronica zich het nummer wel degelijk eigen te maken.

30 King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Gila monster
De uitdrukking 'overdaad schaadt' is volledig aan King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard voorbijgegaan. Nee, de Australische band is meer van 'hoe meer, hoe beter', met maar liefst drieëntwintig albums in tien jaar tijd. Muzikaal stuitert het alle kanten op, met 'Gila monster' als nieuwe loot aan de stam. De single is de voorloper van hun aanstaande album PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation, dat later dit jaar gaat verschijnen. Nou, dan was 24 toch makkelijker te onthouden geweest als titel... In 'Gila monster' horen we King Lizard als ouderwetse metalband terug; da's weer eens heel wat anders dan de psychedelische rock waar de band ooit mee begon. En ach, een hagedis die zingt over een hagedis, da's ook weer eens wat anders.

Ik heb onze grote vriend en veteraan Peter Gabriel werkelijk op nog geen één foutje kunnen betrappen, de afgelopen maandag.
Een smaakvolle presentatie van zijn nummers. Geweldige songs en uitvoering, vocalen op orde. Het is een genot om van deze 70+ artiest op deze wijze nog muziek aangeleverd te krijgen. Daar kunnen de meesten nog een puntje aan zuigen.

Maar goed, eigenlijk zijn natuurlijk ook de Foo Fighters, Vandenberg en Blur goede tot uitstekende veteranen. Ze moeten misschien wat meer moeite te doen om inspiratie op te doen. Maar de resultaten zijn nog steeds prima.

De nieuwe bands Circa Waves, de Psychedelic Porn Crumpets en The Snuts laten zich natuurlijk niet onbetuigd. De PPC hebben een beetje het imago dat waar King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard gaan zij óók gaan. De laatste single is goed maar het is niet beter dan het eerdere werk.
