- Antonio Sanchez ken ik vooral van de soundtrack van Birdman, een van mijn favoriete films van de jaren '10. Dit nummer is wel weer andere koek, want hij drumt en gebruikt vogelgeluiden als percussie. Heel creatief en ook heel aanstekelijk. Hopelijk is dit onderdeel van een groter project, want ik wil hier veel meer van horen.
- De La Soul is natuurlijk wel bekend; fijne plaat dit, mooie sample van The Impressions (Curtis Mayfield) ook.
- The The's laatste album heb ik nooit beluisterd, zou ik toch eens moeten doen. Ik weet eigenlijk niet eens of deze nieuwe single daar ook nog op staat, maar dit is toch wel weer een topper van een band die al zowat 45 jaar meedraait.
- Lucky Fonz III heeft af en toe wel mooie nederpoppareltjes vind ik, vooral tekstueel. Deze is ook weer mooi out-of-the-box gedacht.
- Sharon van Etten is gezegend met een van mijn favoriete stemmen, en deze Pretenders-cover past haar heel heel goed.

Exact negen jaar heeft Romy Madley Croft moeten wachten op haar tweede MuMe-nummer 1-hit, maar met het gay anthem 'Love Who You Love' is die tweede Afrekenings-charttopper nu dan toch een feit. Eind 2016 stond ze samen met haar kameraden van the XX twee weken bovenaan met 'On Hold'. Dit keer verdrijft ze Rosalía en consorten van de eerste plek en moet het drietalige 'Berghain' één stapje terug doen. En verder is de lijst zoals het weer momenteel: rustig, niet zo spannend, maar wel lekker voor de tijd van het jaar.

16. IST IST - Makes No Difference
Postpunk in optima forma op 16: de hoogste binnenkomer deze week komt op naam van Ist Ist. De Mancunians scoorden een paar maanden terug nog een top 10-hit met 'The Fear' en staan nu met 'Makes No Difference' voor de zesde keer in de MuMe-Afrekening. Donkere zang, een diepe baslijn, gotische gitaren en een dikke laag synths, het is Adam Houghton en z'n mannen wel toevertrouwd. Wat dat betreft is 'Makes No Difference' een toepasselijke titel: verrassend kun je het niet noemen, maar ja: wie zit er nou te wachten op een verrassing van Ist Ist als ze de een na de andere vertrouwd-lekkere track uit hun hoge hoed kunnen toveren? In februari volgt hun nieuwe album, 'Dagger'.

25. De La Soul - Day in the Sun (Gettin' Wit U) (ft. Q-Tip & Yummy Bingham)
Over vertrouwd-lekkere tracks gesproken: ook De La Soul heeft nog altijd een hoge hoed die daar vol mee zit. Alsof de winter er niet zit aan te komen toveren de oldschool hiphoppers het muzikale landschap om in een zomers zonovergoten park. Het chille, laidback 'Day in the Sun' betekent hun comeback na negen jaar muzikale afwezigheid en hun eerste muziek sinds twee jaar geleden medegroepslid Trugoy the Dove overleed. Op hun nieuwe single hebben de twee overgebleven De La Soul-ers, Posdnuos en Maseo, daarom de hulp ingeroepen van een andere oldschooler: Q-Tip, in een ver verleden onderdeel van generatiegenoten a Tribe called Quest, rapt ook een woordje mee. Dat is een hernieuwde samenwerking, want way back in 1991 speelden Q-tip en De La Soul ook al eens samen, op de hiphop-classic 'A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays'. De dame die je hoort is Yummy Bingham; een wat minder bekende naam, die eigenlijk ook een soort van comeback maakt. Want hoewel ze nooit echt in de spotlights heeft gestaan, betekent 'Day in the Sun' haar eerste muzikale projectje in zeven jaar tijd.

26. Pulp - The Man Comes Around
'The Man Comes Around' is een van de laatste nummers die Johnny Cash ooit schreef. Hij deed dat in 2002, een jaar voor zijn dood. Cash baseerde de tekst op een droom die hij had, waarin koningin Elisabeth van Engeland hem vergeleek met een doornstruik in een wervelwind. Wat Cash de avond ervoor gegeten of gedronken had, ik wil het niet weten, maar vanuit die droom ging hij op zoek naar de betekenis ervan. En die vond hij in de bijbel, waarin ook sprake was van een soortgelijke vergelijking. Wat resulteerde in een song die bol staat van de bijbelse verwijzingen. Drieëntwintig jaar later maken de Britpoppers van Pulp er een sfeervolle coverversie van. Jarvis Cocker en de zijnen namen het op voor de Britse tv-serie 'The Hack', een serie die draait om het afluisterschandaal door het dagblad News of the World, dat in 2011 leidde tot het opheffen van de krant. Twee zangers en een track vol bijbelse teksten: drie JC's verenigd op één single.

28. Kings of Leon - To Space
We sluiten het rijtje nieuwkomers af met het familiebedrijf Kings of Leon. Ook al weer een dikke twintig jaar in het vak en nog lang niet uitgemusiceerd. Al is 'To Space' misschien niet het meest inspirerende wat de familie Followill ooit gemaakt heeft (aan het eind is de tekst zelfs op en wordt er overgegaan op het aloude 'lalalala'), toch is het op z'n minst een onderhoudende single. Het monotone ritme, waarbij nu eens de drums leidend zijn en niet de gitaren, het heeft iets intrigerends in zich; een groeiplaatje.

Een hele oude band covert een nóg veel oudere single en The Damned wint met het debuut van Pink Floyd de race van de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer voor de hele jonge bands Marseille en de Reytons.

Ik heb nog meer verleidelijk oud. Joe Jackson zal toch zo'n beetje net zo oud zijn als de leden van The Damned, klinkt ook ouderwets goed maar levert dan wel nieuw werk aan. Klinkt als een klok en vocaal nog steeds prima te pruimen.

De andere oude man is J. Masics. Hij was de grote man achter de geweldige band Dinosaur jr., jaren geleden inmiddels. En raad wat, alsof hij nog nooit is weggeweest. Die stem! Muziek weliswaar minder stevig maar de single mag er alleszins zijn.

Een top 3 met platen die allemaal aan de vijfde week toe zijn, toevalligerwijze.
De hoogste nieuwe is, ik kan er niets aan doen, nog wat harder dan mijn soms toch al harde noteringen, en dan ook weer met zo'n lastige letter erin (de ð). Dit is overigens een IJslandse band, maar de taalliefhebbers hadden dat al geraden.
De afkomst van de tweede notering is wat lastiger te raden: wat meer melodieuze en opgewekte metal (ook al is de titel 'the funeral'). Als je ook wat oosterse sferen proeft, klopt dat: het is een Tunesische band.
De derde band is dan weer gewoon Brits, maar maakt wel avant-gardistische jazz.
Weinig kans dat deze drie het ver gaan schoppen in de gezamenlijke lijst.

EA Top 50 met elf binnenkomers

musician verbaasde zich er afgelopen week over dat zijn en mijn lijst geen overeenkomsten vertoonden. Maar ja, als hij dan zelf de fraaie classic rock-single van Stanley Simmons tipt, dan is die overeenkomst er ineens wél. Bovendien hebben we nu ook de nieuwe single van J Mascis (let op de spelling musician!) gemeen, maar die kende ik al; ik val vooral voor de lekker knetterende gitaarsolo.
Verder kan ik de Springsteen-fans ook nog de nieuwe single van Melissa Etheridge aanbevelen: 'Matches' vertoont zowel muzikaal als tekstueel overeenkomsten met 'I'm on fire'.

Stormachtige 20

De eerste nummer 1-hit voor FKA twigs is een feit. HARD staat hier inmiddels al een paar weken op repeat. Verder een vondst uit de playlist van Mausie en Arabische disco.

- De focus is aan het eind van het jaar even wat minder op nieuwe releases. Wel (volgens mij) voor het eerst een nummer van Gorillaz dat mijn lijst haalt, na enkele keren net niet. Deze keer een soort Arabische hiphop met Yasiin Bey (voorheen bekend als Mos Def) en de Syrische zanger Omar Souleyman.

Op maandag 29 december worden tijdens de Eigenwijze Eindejaarslijst 2025 de 100 mooiste liedjes van 2025 gepresenteerd. De muzikale hoogtepunten van 2025 komen voorbij tijdens een twaalf uur lang durend radioprogramma, live vanuit Stadscafé Amersfoort aan het plein van de Lieve Vrouwetoren.
Tijdens dit speciale radioprogramma kun je live mee kijken en luisteren naar de grootste hits van het jaar uit de Eigenwijze 30.
Wij zijn natuurlijk ook te beluisteren via Golfbreker radio, en wel op maandag 29 december van 12 tot 24 uur.

Voor de zesde week op nummer 1 de single van Rosalía, Björk, Yves Tumor en London Symphony Orchestra.
De Spaanse zangeres en componist Rosalía zingt in haar eigen taal en dit keer ook deels in het Duits van neo barok tot nuevo flamenco.
Het lied gaat over een allesverslindende en onhoudbare liefde, waarbij ze zichzelf verliest in de ander.


Stationair op nummer 2 staat de Amerikaanse rapper McKinley Dixon, over het omgaan met rouw en verlies door de herinneringen en verbeelding levend te houden.


Sami Yusuf is met zijn ensemble met zijn Azerbeidzjaanse compositie gaan samenwerken met een Marokkaans ensemble, zij laten hun harten resoneren en stijgen naar nummer 3.


De singles van RAYE en Snarky Puppy, Metropole orkest staan met 8 weken het langst genoteerd.
De nieuwe single van Florence + The Machine is de snelste stijger van deze week.
