Een hoge ontdekkingsgraad bij de nieuwe binnenkomers deze week. Four Tet heb ik destijds leren kennen via een mp3'tje van dit nummer, als ik me goed herinner. Echt fan werd ik toen ik het album Rounds ontdekte en daarna Pause, waar dit nummer vanaf komt. Inmiddels is Four Tet/Kieran Hebden een van de belangrijkste muzikanten van de 21ste eeuw, als je het mij vraagt.

De rest is allemaal nieuw voor mij:
Dax Riders is Franse house, beetje in de geest van Stardust al komt ook Zoot Woman in me op. Grand Popo Football Club zit ook in die hoek, maar dan nog meer richting pop. Het heeft echt een typische maffe popvibe zoals je die wel vaker hoorde in deze tijd. In het begin vond ik het wat kinderlijk, maar na weken luisteren ben ik het wel gaan waarderen. Beide ontdekt via Martijn en pureshores, volgens mij.

Simian maakt psychedelische pop. Na Drop & Roll weer een fijne single van ze, ook weer een mooie voorganger van hun stadionhit die volgend jaar volgt.

Saints & Sinners komen met een fijne progressive tranceplaat, die al een hele tijd op mijn tiplijst stond. Het nummer is inmiddels alweer uit 2000, maar dat deert voor mij niet.

Ik ben laat deze week. Vandaag lukt niet en donderdag is nog niet helemaal zeker, dus reken op vrijdag.

De nieuwe platen:

9 | muse - new born
Met een kalm pianomotief dat ineens omslaat in een zware gitaarriff liet Muse meteen horen hoe eigenzinnig hun tweede album Origin of Symmetry zou worden. In Nederland haalde het nummer de Top 40 niet; opvallend genoeg werd Bliss later pas de eerste Top 40-hit van Muse, met plek 40 als hoogste notering. In Engeland deed New Born het veel beter: de single kwam binnen op nummer 12 en bereikte nummer 3 in de Independent Singles Chart. Rond deze tijd 25 jaar geleden botste Muse met het Amerikaanse label Maverick, dat Matt Bellamy’s falsetstem te weinig radiovriendelijk vond, waardoor Origin of Symmetry daar pas in 2005 uitkwam.

TIP 3 | dirty vegas - days go by
De doorbraak kwam niet alleen uit de clubs, maar vooral via een Mitsubishi Eclipse-reclame: nadat de video op MTV Dance was gezien, belandde de track in een Amerikaanse campagne en begonnen radiozenders hem op te pikken. Opvallend genoeg begon het nummer als akoestisch liedje, deels geschreven op Ibiza en later afgemaakt in Londen, voordat het die broeierige housevorm kreeg. In de Britse hitlijsten kreeg de single bij de re-release in 2002 een tweede leven: nummer 16 in de Singles Chart en zelfs nummer 1 in de Dance Singles Chart. Daarna volgde de ultieme erkenning: Dirty Vegas won er een Grammy voor Best Dance Recording mee, terwijl de clip ook nog werd genomineerd.

TIP 5 | destiny's child – bootylicious
Met die direct herkenbare gitaarriff uit Stevie Nicks’ Edge of Seventeen kreeg Destiny’s Child een van hun brutaalste en meest speelse singles. In Nederland werd het een grote hit: Bootylicious haalde nummer 3 in de Top 40 en bleef 12 weken genoteerd. In de VS werd het zelfs hun vierde en laatste nummer 1-hit in de Billboard Hot 100, terwijl Beyoncé later vertelde dat ze het nummer schreef als reactie op kritiek op haar lichaam. Extra bijzonder: de populariteit van het nummer hielp het woord “bootylicious” uiteindelijk zelfs het Oxford English Dictionary in.

TIP 8 | faithless - we come 1
Met de bezwerende stem van Maxi Jazz en de stadiongrote opbouw van Rollo en Sister Bliss groeide dit uit tot een van Faithless’ meest herkenbare live-anthems. In Nederland was het een forse hit: We Come 1 bereikte nummer 2 in de Top 40 en bleef 16 weken genoteerd. In juni 2001 verscheen het als voorloper van het album Outrospective, waarop Faithless hun mix van trance, house en pop verder oprekte. Ook in Engeland sloeg het hard aan: daar kwam de single tot nummer 3, net zo hoog als hun klassieker Insomnia.

TIP 12 | brainpower - wat een jinx is
Met veel zelfspot prikte Brainpower hier door het beeld heen dat hij “er niet uitzag als rapper”; NPO Radio 2 noemt het nummer expliciet als zijn reactie op dat soort opmerkingen. Het stond op zijn Nederlandstalige debuutalbum Door Merg & Brain, waarop hij zijn snelle flow en woordgrappen stevig neerzette. In Nederland bleef het bescheiden: Wat Een Jinx Is haalde nummer 38 in de Top 40 en stond er 2 weken in. Rond die periode ging het ondertussen hard met Brainpower: door een afzegging van Outkast stond hij in februari 2001 in het voorprogramma van Eminem en enkele maanden later speelde hij op Pinkpop.

TIP 14 | eddy grant - electric avenue (ringbang remix)
Met de Ringbang-remix blies Eddy Grant zijn oude hit nieuw leven in, dit keer met een duidelijk clubgerichter geluid en een mix van reggae, pop en Caribische ritmes. In Nederland kwam deze versie tot nummer 22 in de Top 40 en bleef hij 4 weken genoteerd. Het oorspronkelijke Electric Avenue verwijst naar de gelijknamige straat in Brixton en de spanningen rond de rellen daar, waardoor het nummer onder de dansbare groove ook een sociale lading heeft. In Engeland was de remix nog opvallender succesvol: hij bereikte nummer 5 in de Official Singles Chart.

TIP 16 | foxy brown / spragga benz - oh yeah
Met een sample van Toots & The Maytals’ 54-46 That’s My Number schoof Foxy Brown haar New Yorkse rapstijl stevig richting dancehall. In Nederland bleef Oh Yeah hangen in de Tipparade. De clip werd in Jamaica opgenomen en Spragga Benz was in die periode niet alleen haar muzikale partner, maar ook haar vriend. In Engeland deed de single het beter: nummer 27 in de gewone hitlijst en nummer 3 in zowel de Dance Singles Chart als de Hip Hop & R&B Singles Chart.

TIP 17 | radio 4 - dance to the underground
Met zijn hoekige baslijn, koebel en nerveuze punkfunk-groove werd dit een vroege blauwdruk voor de dance-punkgolf rond New York. De single verscheen eerst als EP op Gern Blandsten en kreeg later extra clubleven via remixes van onder meer The Faint, Playgroup en The DFA.

TIP 19 | nick cave & the bad seeds - fifteen feet of pure white snow
Met een dreigende pianostamp en een gospelachtige kooruitbarsting klinkt dit als een rare mix van apocalyps, cabaret en kroegmeezinger. De videoclip is extra leuk: John Hillcoat regisseerde, en tussen de dansende gasten duiken onder anderen Jarvis Cocker, Jason Donovan en acteur Noah Taylor op. In Engeland bleef het bescheiden, maar wel zichtbaar: nummer 52 in de Official Singles Chart en nummer 5 in de Independent Singles Chart.

TIP 20 | u2 – elevation
Alsof U2 ineens een stadionrocknummer door een actiefilmfilter trok: de singleversie was Chris Vrenna’s stevigere Tomb Raider Mix, ook gebruikt voor de soundtrack van Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. In Nederland werd het een nummer 1-hit in de Top 40 en bleef de plaat 14 weken genoteerd. Daarmee volgde U2 snel op Beautiful Day, hun eerste Nederlandse nummer 1-hit en bevestigde de band dat All That You Can’t Leave Behind ook commercieel een enorme comeback was. Extra kroon op het nummer: het won later een Grammy voor Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

En dan ben je ook blij als de Human League zich weer eens aandient. Rufrus Wainwright is een meer onbekend gezicht maar heeft zijn plaats in deze lijst ruimschoots verdiend.

Deze week een top 10 waarin bijna niets gebeurt; ik beloof alvast dat volgende week geen enkele plaat blijft staan (inclusief de nummer 1).

Ook qua binnenkomers is het rustig: drie slechts. De hoogste is voor Mark Knopfler, die als soloartiest de singlehitparades niet meer haalt, maar met zijn albums goede zaken doet. Deze Silvertown blues komt van het succesvolle Sailing to Philadelphia. Het is klassiek-Knopfler, met een rustige sfeervolle opbouw maar een wat herhalend refrein, en die gitaarsound die uit duizenden herkenbaar is.

De tweede nieuwe is de Amerikaanse band Train, die debuteert (maar wel vanaf hun tweede album) op 36. Het zal niet verbazen dat in mijn schrift de titel toen nog genoteerd stond als Tell me; maar een week later was het al Drops of Jupiter. De radiovriendelijke gitaarsong was een instant succes; het intro met piano, de titel die al snel valt (maar daarna niet meer), het indringende refrein en steeds sterkere strijkers maakten het eigenlijk meteen al een classic. Vreemd eigenlijk dat ze dit succes niet wisten voort te zetten (tot ze 10 jaar later met veel simpelere popsongs opnieuw de hitlijsten zouden bestormen).

Daft Punk komt als laatste binnen, met Digital love. De sound is hier wat minder herhalend-ritmisch, en wat meer open en akoestisch. De vocalen klinken steeds wel gesmoord, je wacht de hele tijd tot het weer helder klinkt, maar dat gebeurt niet. Ineens hoor je dan Supertramp-achtige toetsen, en dan weer wat fellere uithalen; het is een fraai geheel, maar niet zo hitgericht.

nieuw:
The Rapture had al wat singles uit dacht ik, maar deze leadtrack van hun gelijknamige EP is de eerste voltreffer. Geweldige hoekige sound a la Gang of Four met prettig schreeuwerige zang.

Belle and Sebastian, daar is het beste nu wel vanaf, maar eigenlijk zijn ze pas net begonnen met singles uitbrengen. Dit is volgens mij de laatste release die ik van ze gekocht heb, maar ze zijn natuurlijk nog altijd razend actief met momenteel zelfs een WK-song voor Schotland. Deze Jonathan David is gewoon leuk, maar komt niet meer in de buurt van het werk van de eerste drie albums.

Verrassend is voor mij Minus 8, een Oostenrijkse producer die nu-jazz/jaren '60 soul combineert met hedendaagse breakbeats. Fantastische zangeres, waarvan ik zo 1-2-3 niet kan achterhalen wie dit is. Doet me een beetje denken aan Marlena Shaw.

Verder nog Turin Brakes en Johan, indiepop uit hetzelfde vaarwater. Allebei mooie liedjes.

TIP 11 | semisonic - get a grip
Na het grote succes van “Closing Time” koos Semisonic hier voor een speelser poprockgeluid met een bijna reggae-achtige feel en nogal wat knipogende dubbelzinnigheden. Het nummer staat op All About Chemistry, de derde Semisonic-plaat, waarop ook Carole King opdook als duetpartner van Dan Wilson in “One True Love”. Rond deze periode in 2001 bleek het lastig om het momentum van Feeling Strangely Fine vast te houden, en daarna zou het lang stil worden rond nieuw Semisonic-materiaal.

TIP 13 | live - forever may not be long enough
Voor de soundtrack van The Mummy Returns schreef Live-frontman Ed Kowalczyk dit nummer samen met producer Glen Ballard; later belandde het ook op het vijfde album V. De videoclip sloot daar slim op aan, met een Egyptische setting en filmbeelden uit The Mummy Returns.

TIP 15 | n.e.r.d. – lapdance
De eerste single van N.E.R.D. liet meteen horen dat Pharrell Williams en Chad Hugo naast hun strakke Neptunes-producties ook zin hadden in rauwe raprock en funk. In Nederland kwam de plaat tot nummer 22 in de Top 40 en bleef hij daar vier weken staan. Opvallend is dat “Lapdance” twee gedaantes kreeg: de oorspronkelijke elektronische versie en later een stevigere albumversie met meer live-instrumenten.

TIP 18 | deepswing - in the music
Achter Deepswing zaten de Amerikaanse houseproducers Eric Wikman en James Donaldson, die met deze plaat een opvallend warme mix maakten van soulful house, disco-invloeden en een herkenbare saxofoonlijn. Opvallend genoeg is het nummer opnieuw actueel geworden door een nieuwe versie met TWENTY SIX, die in maart 2026 naar radio en digitale platforms ging.

TIP 19 | lifehouse - hanging by a moment
Voor Lifehouse was dit meteen de grote doorbraak: zanger Jason Wade schreef de song voor debuutalbum No Name Face, en de band vond er zijn herkenbare mix van postgrunge en radiovriendelijke melodie mee. In Nederland werd het een hit: nummer 19 in de Top 40. De plaat werd in Amerika de grootste single van de Billboard-eindejaarslijst, terwijl hij in de wekelijkse Hot 100 nooit verder kwam dan nummer 2.

TIP 20 | rammstein - links 2 3 4
Met deze tweede single van Mutter maakte Rammstein expliciet korte metten met beschuldigingen van rechtse sympathieën: het refrein draait om het idee dat hun hart “links” klopt. De volledig met CGI gemaakte videoclip, waarin een kolonie mieren het opneemt tegen kevers, paste perfect bij de militante marsbeat van het nummer.

Nee, ik heb niet eerst gewacht tot de uitslag van Nederland tegen Zweden om Hakan Hellström in mijn lijst te plaatsen. Hij stond vorige week al in mijn tiplijst. Bovendien verdient de jongen het.

Van Prefab Sprout ken ik relatief maar heel weinig singles, terwijl de band toch een uiterst herkenbare zanger heeft. Nieuwe ronde nieuwe kansen.

CPR is de band rond David Crosby, zijn zoon Raymond en nog een lid van de band die Pevar heet.
In de regel is het een alleraardigste softrock mainstream band, gelardeerd met de geweldige stem van Crosby. Maar als het feller wordt, zoals hier, krijgt het nummer wat extra's en kan CPR wedijveren met de beste bands in de lijst.

Hoewel Pyramid song een sterke nummer 1 is, moet hij toch al ruimte maken voor het overweldigende Schism van Tool. Opmerkelijk dat ik nu de enige ben die deze grandioze single in zijn top 20 heeft staan (of is hij al eerder aan bod geweest?).

De eerste binnenkomer is de tweede (en tevens laatste) hit voor de Britse soul/funkband Mo Solid Gold. Personal saviour is een gedreven song, met passie gezongen en gespeeld. Misschien mist het net een overtuigend refrein, maar het klinkt uitstekend.

De tweede entry is voor het eveneens Britse My Vitriol, en toevalligerwijze is het ook hun tweede notering bij mij, en tevens hun laatste. Grounded is een vrij standaard alternative rocksingle met een wat zeurderig refrein; ik ben hier achteraf wat minder tevreden over dan over de eerste binnenkomer.

De laatste nieuwe is ook de bekendste: Ice queen van Within Temptation, hun doorbraaksingle en meteen grootste hit. Opmerkelijk is het zeker: de sound is nog behoorlijk metal, met ondersteunende koortjes, stevig toetsenwerk en natuurlijk de heldere stem van Sharon den Adel. Als ik me niet vergis, werd hier wat denigrerend de term 'sprookjesmetal' of zelfs 'Eftelingmetal' voor bedacht; maar dit is en blijft een ijzersterk nummer, dat ook veel navolging (van mindere kwaliteit) kreeg. In het Hitdossier zie ik dat deze single pas in januari 2002 in de NL top 40 binnenkwam, en ik zie nu ook dat de plaat nu bij mij maar een bescheiden notering haalt, en in januari 2002 het nog even dunnetjes over doet.

TIP 6 | Stereophonics – Have A Nice Day
Met “Have A Nice Day” schuiven de Stereophonics de zonnige kant van hun derde album Just Enough Education To Perform naar voren. Waar de Welshe band vaak stevig en rauw kon klinken, draait dit nummer juist om een ontspannen poprock-groove, akoestische gitaren en een meezingbaar “ba-ba-ba”-refrein. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk was het een grote single: de plaat haalde daar de vijfde plaats, terwijl het album zelf op nummer 1 belandde.

TIP 12 | Monza – Van God Los
Belgische rock met een scherpe Nederlandstalige rand. “Van God Los” was de eerste single van Monza, de band rond Stijn Meuris, die eerder naam maakte met Noordkaap. Het nummer komt van het gelijknamige debuutalbum en koppelt stevige gitaren aan een tekst die direct blijft hangen: rebels, puntig en typisch Meuris. In Vlaanderen groeide het uit tot een Belpopklassieker; niet voor niets dook het later geregeld op in lijsten met Nederlandstalige rockfavorieten.

TIP 14 | Ocean Colour Scene – Up On The Down Side
Britpop is al voorbij zijn hoogtepunt, maar Ocean Colour Scene laat horen dat er nog genoeg leven in die gitaartraditie zit. “Up On The Down Side” opent hun album Mechanical Wonder met warme Hammond-achtige kleuren, soepel drumwerk en de soulvolle stem van Simon Fowler. Net als Stereophonics kiest de band voor melodieuze Britse poprock, maar Ocean Colour Scene blijft dichter bij mod, soul en sixties-invloeden. In de UK kwam de single tot nummer 19.

TIP 15 | Agent Sumo – 24 Hours
Tussen de gitaren valt Agent Sumo op met een strakke clubplaat. “24 Hours” is house met een duidelijke Britse dancesound: veel drive, weinig opsmuk en gemaakt voor de overgang van nachtclub naar radio. De single verscheen op Virgin en deed het vooral goed binnen de dancehoek; in de Britse Dance Singles Chart haalde hij nummer 4, terwijl de algemene UK Singles Chart net buiten de top 40 bleef steken op nummer 44.

TIP 16 | Train – Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)
Met “Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)” komt Train binnen met een van de meest herkenbare piano-rockballads uit deze lichting. De strijkers geven het nummer een bijna filmische grandeur, terwijl zanger Pat Monahan de tekst mysterieus en emotioneel houdt. Het was afkomstig van het gelijknamige tweede album en groeide internationaal uit tot de grote doorbraak van de band. In Nederland haalde de single de derde plaats in de Top 40; in de VS kwam hij tot nummer 5.

TIP 17 | Lil’ Devious – Come Home
“Come Home” van Lil’ Devious brengt opnieuw clubenergie in de lijst. De track verscheen via Rulin Records/Ministry Of Sound en past in de vroege jaren-nulfsfeer waarin house, progressive en vocal hooks elkaar vaak vonden. De single werd geen grote pophit, maar scoorde wel in de Britse dancewereld: nummer 8 in de Official Dance Singles Chart en nummer 55 in de algemene UK Singles Chart. Opvallend is ook de link met met de binnenkomer op nummer 15: er bestaat een Agent Sumo-remix van de track.

TIP 19 | Daft Punk – Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
Daft Punk komt binnen met een nummer dat later alleen maar iconischer zou worden. “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” komt van Discovery en bouwt op vocoderstemmen, robotfunk en een sample uit “Cola Bottle Baby” van Edwin Birdsong. Waar Agent Sumo vooral de clubvloer bedient, maakt Daft Punk er futuristische popkunst van. De single haalde in de UK de top 25 van de fysieke singleslijst en werd later extra bekend door Kanye Wests “Stronger”.

TIP 20 | Birgit – Few Like You
De Nederlandse bijdrage komt van Birgit. “Few Like You” is frisse poprock van haar debuutalbum Few Like Me, met een radiovriendelijke gitaarbasis en een direct refrein. Birgit Schuurman was op dat moment niet alleen zangeres, maar ook al een bekende naam uit film en televisie, waardoor haar muziekcarrière meteen extra aandacht kreeg. In de Nederlandse Top 40 kwam de single tot nummer 15.

Grappig dat de nieuwe Semisonic zo goed scoort. Op het eerste gehoor vond ik het nog niet zo bijzonder, maar het nummer is destijds compleet langs me heengegaan i.t.t. Chemistry dat ik heel vaak heb gehoord. Die gaat de komende weken dus zeker nog wel de kans krijgen.

Wel jammer/opvallend dat het niet op Spotify staat...

Wel even Yellow One - No man's law proberen te vinden: niet op internet. Vermoedelijk geen correcte weergave van titel en/of artiest. In mijn schrift stond een teken dat aanduidde: Nederlands. Wordt ook geen hit bij mij, misschien maar één keer gehoord...

Volgens mij staan beide nummers op Spotify?
Hoewel ik moet toegeven dat ik ook enigszins last heb van de warmte...
