Deze keer vrij onverwacht een nieuwe nummer 1. De zangeres van Sue the Night heeft bovendien een charmant stemgeluid à dat van Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac). Fijne ~on the road~ rock.

Ook heb ik deze weken erg veel leuks uit Zuid-Korea en Japan ontdekt. Genoeg leuke liedjes op dit moment. Spijtig is de commerciële muziek in Nederland niet zo divers.

Die viert eind deze maand z'n vierde verjaardag. Fenomenaal nummer (een van de beste ooit imo), maar ik zou dan zelf eerder plek inruimen voor een single die max. 1 jaar oud is. Maar dat is natuurlijk helemaal aan jou. Dat gezegd hebbende: ik kan niet wachten op haar nieuwe album. Zou nog ergens deze zomer moeten uitkomen maar de release is al meerdere keren uitgesteld.

Soms hoor je een nummer pas 4 jaar na de release, helaas. Ik wil ook een nieuwe Sky, dat ze de drugs hopelijk van zich af weet te slaan!

Ja, dat is wel te hopen. Is helaas grotendeels de invloed geweest van haar vriendje Zachary Cole Smith (van DIIV) die lange tijd een serieuze heroïneverslaving had. En volgens mij nog steeds regelmatig onder invloed op een podium staat. Tijdens zijn optreden op BKS had hij duidelijk wat gebruikt.

Massive Attack: Massive Attack is goed bezig dit jaar, na meerdere luisterbeurten toch weer overtuigd. Erg mooie tekst, en erg fraai gearrangeerd.

Gaika: interessantste nieuwkomer van het afgelopen jaar. Gooit o.a. grime, dancehall, en R&B allemaal in een blender, en geeft het een donkere, vervreemdende ondertoon.

Classixx: fijn, zomers popliedje, ontzettend pakkend. Met een clip waarin de clip van The Smiths' Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before wordt nagebootst. Met T-Pain in de rol van Morrissey, je bedenkt het niet! Misschien leuk voor een Smiths-fan als ArthurDZ om eens te bekijken.

Nas & Erykah Badu: Nas overtuigt nog niet helemaal in zin raps, maar verder is dit een beetje Billie Holiday anno 2016.

Miles Davis & Robert Glasper (ft. Erykah Badu): nog een keer Erykah Badu. Het herinterpretatie-album van Miles Davis moet ik maar eens cheken, want dit is alweer de derde toffe single, gebaseerd op Miles Davis' Maiysha.

Swans: heel indringend. Een nummer dat Michael Gira voor zijn vrouw heeft geschreven om door haar gezongen te worden, het gaat namelijk over seksueel msibruik waar ze mee te maken heeft gehad, en waar ze in de eerste persoon over zingt. Zwaar nummer, gelukkig is de eindconclusie dat ze nog leeft.

RichPoSlim (ft. ABRA): een lid van het eigenzinnige rapperscollectief uit Atlanta, Awful Records. Het is echter vooral een tof nummer dankzij de beat en het refrein van ABRA.

Dominik Eulberg: techno-artiest die heel constant wat betreft de kwaliteit van zijn muziek: ik ben zelden teleurgesteld. Heeft ook een fraaie, eigen stijl ontwikkeld; organisch, sfeervol en meeslepend.

ScHoolboy Q (ft. Kanye West): zijn tweede top 40-hit in Amerika, en dat is knap, want Q is niet echt een commerciele rapper. Met Man of the Year had ie een paar jaar terug wel een leuke clubhit, maar dit is daar veel te traag en te donker voor (de beat dan), lijkt me. Kanye steelt overigens de show!

Låpsley (DJ Koze Remix): ik ken Låpsley vooral van de kleine, ingetogen liedjes met subtiele electronica. Operator is echter van zichzelf al wat vlotter en het blijkt bijzonder geschikt voor een disco-aanpak, zo bewijst DJ Koze. Erg tof gedaan! Låpsley stem leent zich er ook prima voor.

Sleigh Bells: ik kende de naam wel, maar had er een heel verkeerd beeld van. Ik dscht dat het een soort surf-bandje was, maar dat bleek totale onzin, geen idee waar ik dat vandaan haalde. Dit zit meer in de hoek van de U.S. Girls, spannend liedje met spannende electronica, en weer zo'n fijn donker randje.

Het resultaat van een muzikale week met veel (her)ontdekkingen van nummers die al enige tijd rond bivakkeerden in dit topic. Hoogtepunt was het prachtige nieuwe album van Michael Kiwanuka met dit prijsnummer. Lange tijd niet aangeraakt omdat ik echt een hekel heb aan Home Again van hem, maar blij verrast dus.

-17: Lapsley/DJ Koze: 10 minuten durend discofestijn met trommeltjes, orgeltjes en strijkers.
-21: Daniele Baldelli draaide zijn discoplaatjes al toen DJ Koze nog in de luiers lag. Joka Joka is een heerlijke afrodiscoplaat van deze pionier.
-31: The Avalanches hebben meerdere singles uit nu, maar deze en Subways zijn van die heerlijke flarden muziek die zomaar langsgewaaid komen.
-33: The Julie Ruin deed me erg denken aan Le Tigre en nu blijken ze ook gewoon dezelfde zangeres te delen. Lekker schreeuwerig springplaatje voor de indiedisco.
-35: De La Soul's nieuwe single klinkt ook weer niet zo opzienbarend, maar is zo ontzettend heerlijk laidback dat ie wel heel goed binnenkwam afgelopen week.
-36: The Rifles luisterde ik een jaar of 10 geleden. Uit de grote hausse aan Britpopbandjes vielen ze bij mij op door hun meeslepende sound en ook nu weer door deze geweldige single.
-37: Shura scoorde bij mij al 1 grote en 1 kleine hit. Vermoedelijk gaat dit nummer ook nog flink stijgen, want veel beter wordt pure popmuziek toch niet.
-40: U.S. Girls scoorde bij mij vorig jaar een van de grootste hits met Window Shades, maar de opvolgers deden me veel minder. Ook deze New Age Thriller flopte een paar maanden terug, maar nu in de herkansing komt ie toch alsnog binnen. Lekker donker synthpopplaatje.

Ondanks dat we deze week 26 deelnemers hadden, is ineens alle samenhang uit de lijst weg. De ondergrens ligt wéér lager, en er zijn heel bewegingen. Allerlei re-entries, hoge binnenkomers, hoge uitvallers. Justice valt vanuit de top 10 in één keer uit de lijst, terwijl Mac Miller met slechts drie noteringen in één keer de top 10 binnenkomt. Ik vind het erg jammer, maar ik heb er alle hoop op dat het na de zomer en de vakantieperiode weer bijtrekt. Ik zal het wel wat korter houden per nummer.

Mac Miller ft. Anderson .Paak: Anderson .Paak is hét grote talent im de hiphop, en vermengt het met soul en funk. Mac Miller is al langer bezig maar lijkt zich op deze single aan te passen aan de stijl van .Paak en dat past hem goed.

The Avalanches: hun derde hit alweer dit jaar, deze keer hebben ze een obscuur post-punkplaatje van een twaaljfjarige (!) zangeres gesampled en combineren ze dit met disco-achtige strijkers.

Keaton Henson: een relatief onbekende naam, maar dit is een fraai, ingetogen en emotioneel folkplaatje.

PJ Harvey: waarschijnlijk had ze dit nog liggen uit de albumsessies vsn haar laatste album, maar paste het niet op dat album (je moet toch selectief zijn). Maar was het dan toch te goed om niet uit te brengen... Het ligt in de lijn van de vorige singles, maar persoonlijk vind ik dit eigenlijk de beste.

La Femme: ik had in mijn hoofd dat Sur La Planche 2013 drie jaar geleden een grote hit was in de MuMeAfrekening maar bij terugzoeken bleek dat nogal tegen te vallen. Hoe dan ook was dat een lekker speels popplaatje, met surf-invloeden. Deze nieuwe single is wat rustiger, maar heeft ook een fijne feelgood-sfeer en kunnen ze zo draaien bij Radio Tour de France.

Bachar Mar-Khalifé: zoals Herman al aangaf komt deze man uit een muzikale familie. Zelf had ik eerder dit jaar Layla in mijn lijst, die helaas niet zo werd opgepikt. Ik bekijk nu trouwens voor het eerst de clip van Lemon en die heeft een andere versie dan degene op Spotify! Veel meer up-tempo, met een beat en Arabische melodieën erdoorheen. En vooral: de zangeres Yolla Khalifé doet er niet op mee, terwijl zij juist het hoogtepunt vormt. Beluister dus ook zeker de versie met Yolla.

Disclosure: het is wat twijfelachtig of het een single is, toegegeven, maar op de Nederlandse radio wordt het wel als single beschouwd. De broers van Disclosure zijn op dit nummer niet meer de meesters van de dansvloer maar veranderen een oud Al Green-nummer (I'm Still in Love with You) tot een fraaie slow jam. Een modern jasje zonder het jaren '70 soul-geluid te verliezen.

Crows: na Monarks van vorige week weer een energieke, jonge rockband uit Engeland. En één van de nieuwe ontdekkingen van de NME maar die hebben heden ten dage niet zoveel invloed meer. En ze staan in het voorprogramma bij Wolf Alice, die kennen we hier wel.

Emmanuelle: ze is geboren in Rio de Janeiro, opgegroeid in Miami, maar opereert nu vanuit Milaan en wellicht heeft ze daar haar liefde voor Italo-muziek opgedaan, of is ze er heen gegaan omdat ze die liefde al had. Hoe dan ook, het resultaat is een prettig zomers danceplaatje op het label van de gebroeders Dewaele (Soulwax). Vooral de klankkleur van Emmanuelle's stem komt hier erg fijn naar voren.

Desiigner: scoorde eerder dit jaar een enorme hit met zijn gimmick-hiphop-hit Panda, tevens zijn debuutsingle. De opvolger is serieuzer, en heeft een melancholische, ietwat donkere ondertoon. Fraai geproduceerd, met raps over zijn slechte jeugd. De beat-wending aan het eind doet vermoeden dat het allemaal goed zou komen met hem, waarvan akte.

En wie weet, volgende week een nieuwe nummer 1?

Hey Arrie, volgens mij klopt er iets niet: Emanuelle is meer dan 2 keer genoemd.

Jup, maar bij Herman en mezelf niet in de top 20. Het gaat om top 20-noteringen.
