Idle frets - Talk about you (12)
Idle Frets is een bandje uit Chester, Groot-Brittannië, dat in februari al een nummer 1-hit scoorde in mijn lijst met "Glow". Hun nieuwe single "Talk about you" lijkt daar schaamteloos veel op. Lekker dus! Gewoon een stevig moppie lichtelijk emo indie-pop; knalt lekker de speakers uit.

Now, now - SGL (16)
Nou nou! Now Now blijkt al vijftien jaar te bestaan, maar ik kende ze nog niet. De groep uit Blaine, Minnesota rond zangeres Cacie Dalager (tegenwoordig is het zelfs nog maar een duo) brengt voor het eerst in vijf jaar weer nieuwe muziek uit. "SGL" staat voor ShotGun Lover; ik kan me zo voorstellen dat ze dat niet voluit schrijven vanwege allerlei enge schietpartijen. Monotone zang (maar dat is gelukkig heel wat anders dan eentonige zang) en een lekker gitaartje; het vliegt nergens de bocht uit en ik mag dat wel.

Matthew and the atlas - Palace (18)
"Palace" is een ballad waar Matthew Hegarty en zijn band the Atlas patent op lijken te hebben. Met voorganger "Elijah" bereikten ze in mijn lijst in februari de top 3 en deze gaat langzaamaan ook dezelfde richting uit. De zanger uit het Britse Aldershot maakt muziek die te vergelijken valt met Bon Iver of Damien Rice; akoestische ballads met piano en gitaar, rustig kabbelend, melodieus; herfstmuziek zeg maar.

Kenny White & Ada Dyer - Charleston (19)
Over schietpartijen gesproken (zie "SGL"): op 17 juni 2015 werden in Charleston, South Carolina, negen kerkgangers doodgeschoten door een blanke racist. Country-artiest Kenny White (beetje wrange naam in dit geval) schreef er een epos over, waarin hij een duet aangaat met zangeres Ada Dyer. White is nooit solo doorgebroken, maar is al veertig jaar lang profmuzikant, andere artiesten begeleidend, maar ook niet te beroerd om reclamedeuntjes te schrijven voor bijvoorbeeld Coca Cola of Chevrolet. Solo brengt ie zo af en toe een album uit; dit jaar laat hij voor het eerst in zes jaar weer eens van zich horen. Ada Dyer is een donkere zangeres die meer in de jazz/ R&B-hoek zit; samen blenden ze prachtig op deze haunting track.

Badbadnotgood feat. Sam Herring - I don't know (20)
Nog een interessante combi! Badbadnotgood is een Canadees jazzkwartet dat graag hiphoptracks covert. Op "I Don't Know" gaan ze echter een duet aan met de zanger van Future Islands, Sam Herring. Dit is dus wat ze 'soulful' noemen. Een lekker ouderwetse uitstraling en een nummer met een intrigerende tekst; mijmeringen over de dood. Niet vrolijk, wel erg goed.

Luister je ze ook allemaal minimaal 1 x per week? Plus tips?
Ik vind daar voor mezelf een soort van verplichting in zitten, vandaar dat ik bij 100+ nummers enigszins wit weg trek bij het idee.

Ik heb momenteel een deur-tot-deur reistijd van een kleine 2 uur om op het werk te komen. Die grotendeels per trein wordt afgelegd. Dus tijd genoeg om mijn tiplijst van zo'n 200 nummers langs te laten komen (waaruit ik dus deze top 100 selecteer). Plus de Discover Weekly, de Release Radar, de MuMe-tips (al kan ik bij sommige inzenders wat sneller doorscrollen...), de updates van de Altcountrynl-playlist, de Songpickr-playlist, Free 40 charts, New Indie Index, New Alternative playlist en Pinguinradio Graadmeter.

Ik ontdek via Spotify nog wekelijks een geweldig aanbod van leuke nieuwe muziek, en nu ik de tijd heb luister ik daar graag naar. Het voelt niet als een verplichting dus, maar als een ontdekt goudmijntje, zeg maar.

Bovendien merk ik dat, met al die samengestelde playlists, ik er al moeite mee heb om een heel album uit te zitten. Dat klinkt nu ineens eenvormig, zakt hier en daar in en bevalt nooit 100%. Wat met een zelfgekozen playlist wel zo is.

Ik vond altijd (pre-Spotify-tijdperk) dat een persoonlijke hitparade een top 30 als ideale afmeting had, want daarna werd de muziek minder interessant. Nu kwam ik erachter dat een top 50 zelfs nog te beperkt was, omdat flink wat tips dat niet eens konden bereiken, terwijl het wel interessante en goede muziek is. Vandaar dus een uitbreiding naar 100.
Kost me wel een paar uurtjes om dat samen te stellen en door de tiplijst heen te scrollen. Ik zet alle 'top 100-waardige' nummers in de voor mij goede volgorde en zet er daarna een rangnummer voor. Blijk ik wekelijks zo rond de 120 uit te komen.
Maar ja, muziek en cijfertjes hè, het blijft toch een fetish...

O ja, en ik kijk geen tv.

Prima weekje met goede ontdekkingen. En een stukje voor de deadline dit keer dus da’s ook wel fijn, kan ik weer lekker aan mijn tentamens gaan zitten. Het podium is niet veranderd, wat dus betekent dat de onderdrukker nog altijd geen vrede kent en dat Charlotte Carpenter het al een indrukwekkend lange tijd volhoudt in de hoogste regionen. De lijst verwelkomt drie nieuwkomers, waarvan één heel erg leuke die je volgende week op het podium kan verwachten. In de Tip ook weer wat leuke entries.

De lieftallige Lauran miste met Head Young Shoulders net de cut voor mijn hoofdlijst, waar ik in retrospectie toch wel spijt van heb. Voordeel is wel dat een nieuwe single direct mijn aandacht weet te vestigen, zeker als ie zo goed is als het bijzonder verslavende E-L-I-Z-A. Is that all I have to say? Nou nee, nog even drie dingetjes. 1. Eliza is net ietsje steviger dan ik van haar ken maar nog altijd vrij dominant in de sneeuwpop. 2. Lauran heeft ook een erg interessante zangstem die ze regelmatig laat overslaan. Kan dat trucje niet altijd waarderen, maar zij voert het perfect uit (bijna Heather Boo-perfect zelfs). En 3. Met een dertiende plek schaart ze zich precies tussen wat ik maar het Suikerleger van Jezza noem; drie sneeuwpopmeisjes die ik ken via hun connectie met Jerry Williams. Hibberd heeft van de week nog in haar voorprogramma gestaan op haar eigen Isle of Wight dus Sugarfactory, strik Lauran ook gelijk even voor 11 december. She built a home in the back of my mind.

Jane Weaver - The Architect
Without more ado, the next item is a song about aaoooooorchitects. Called The AAOOOOOOOORCHITECT. THE AOOOOORCHITECT. AOOOORCHITECT. Sorry, kon het niet laten.
Deze bijzonder broeierige track van Jane uit Liverpool heb ik uit Hermans lijstje geplukt . Elektronica die niet enkel drie lagen dik over je boterham is uitgesmeerd maar ook over de volledige broodtrommel én tas.

Ayo - Paname
Ayo is het pseudoniem van de Nigeriaans-Duitse Joy Olasunmibo Ogunmakin. Prachtige naam, fijn liedje. In het nummer verklaart ze de liefde aan Paname (= Parijs) en dat doet ze door het traditionele en beetje clichématige te verwerken in een fris poppy jasje. De clip is ook in Parijs opgenomen en derhalve ontkom je niet aan die vervelende mimespelers. Dank Arnout.

Cosmo Sheldrake - Come Along
Cosmo is een multi-instrumentalist uit Londen. Zijn moeder is docent Mongolian overtone chanting,een bizarre zangtechniek waarin iemand twee noten tegelijk kan zingen. Zelf kan Cosmo het niet (zangtechnisch trekt ie meer richting alt-J), maar zijn ietwat rare muziekstijl heeft hij niet van een vreemde. Come Along is winterkitsch van de bovenste plank die me aan de ene kant Harry Potter-asscociaties geeft en tegelijk onbewust doet wachten op een BURY YOUR SOUL UNDER ICE! Tevergeefs helaas, maar het blijft tof, als je een beetje van de gimmick houdt

Franz Ferdinand - Always Ascending
Mijn MuMetijd begon een dik jaar terug met een ellenlange lofzang over Franz Ferdinand waarin ik tot het einde der tijden mijn liefde verklaarde aan deze Schotten. Die liefde mag dan inmiddels wel wat bekoeld zijn, ik hoor ze nog steeds graag en da’s niet alleen maar nostalgie. Een vrijbrief voor mijn Afrekening hebben ze echter niet meer, dus Always Ascending (a.k.a. de eerste single uit het post-McCarthy tijdperk met twee nieuwe bandleden) moet nog gewoon achteraan aansluiten in de rij. AA neigt nog het meest naar Lucid Dreams (de single dan, niet de epische albumversie) maar zeker aan de intro is te merken dat ze hun samenwerking met Sparks ook nog niet achter zich hebben gelaten. Eigenlijk is die intro ook wel het meest spannende aan het nummer, de eerste twee minuten zijn echt geweldig. Daarna wordt het misschien wel iets te repetitief, al begon hij bij mijn laatste draaibeurt wel te stijgen in mijn achting. Hopelijk doet het nummer zijn titel eer aan, en ik ben toch wel ongeduldig het begin 2018 te verschijnen nieuwe album.

Helena Hauff - Gift
De electronicscene in Hamburg draait volgens mij best aardig, en dankzij Panjoe kruis ik nu paden met Helena. De 27-jarige smijt met industriële beats en het resultaat is verrassend catchy te noemen: ik krijg zelfs een beetje Caribou-associaties. Wel heb ik een puntje van kritiek en dat is eigenlijk de schuld van Marie Davidson en in mindere mate Yaeji. Sinds hen ben ik te weten gekomen hoe een nummer van goed tot episch verheven kan worden met de juiste vocalen eronder, waardoor ik bij het volledig instrumentale Gift dus een beetje op mijn honger blijf zitten. Ik ben denk ik wat verwend geraakt.

Objekt - Needle and Thread
Nu mijn moeder in een opwelling heeft besloten een trui voor me te gaan breien kan dit nummer niet ontbreken. Sowieso zijn electronic nummers met naalden als thema doorgaans erg tof, omdat deze meestal bouwen op lekker kille ritmische tikjes. En zo ook dit ruim negen minuetn lange object, wederom uit de lijst van Joe geplukt.

Timothy Heller - Sleep
“Yes, I’m a girl called Timothy,” schijft de LA-se op haar Twitter. Ach, zolang je niet verward wordt met een Zweedse rock’n roll dude is dat niet het einde van de wereld. Fijn no-nonsense popliedje verder, met een beetje afgeknepen zang en bubbelende instrumentatie die geleidelijk toeneemt in volume totdat we aan het einde met een toffe geluidswal zitten opgescheept.

Ik vond het toen al aangename muziek, maar inmiddels zijn ze op wat grotere schaal aan het doorbreken. Gisteren zat ik in een rumoerige trein met schreeuwende mensen, zingende mensen en bedelaars en zelf was ik ook al vrij onrustig. Het was dit intieme fluisterliedje van Luwten dat me eindelijk wat rust bracht.

Echt een goeie periode, lang gelden dat er nog zoveel topnummers waren en dat selecteren zo lastig was!

Hoogste nieuwkomer is van Zola Jesus. Ik kende het nummer al langer maar was er niet zo bijzonder van onder de indruk. Met een nieuw clipje kwam het nog eens onder mijn aandacht en nu viel het ineens volledig op zijn plek. Verder ook nog de nieuwe single van Tune-Yards. Ik ben groot liefhebber en normaal gezien zou een nieuwe single los de top 10 binnen komen, maar ik ben toch niet volledig overtuigd van het nieuw nummer dus de entree is iets bescheidener.
