Dat is bij mij dan weer net de enige die het wel gehaald heeft.

Wolf Alice vond ik net wel weer heel fijn klinken, maar het kwartje viel net niet. Net als bij sommige nummers van The National kon ik er vrij veel naar luisteren, maar er ontbreekt dan toch net iets om er echt voor te vallen.

Ik ga op 8 januari pas de eerste weeklijst berekenen, want vandaag eindigt eigenlijk pas de laatste week van 2017.. De eerste weeklijst van 2018 bestrijkt derhalve de 'week + 1 dag' van 1 t/m 8 januari

Nog net even wat tijd kunnen vrijmaken voor mijn laatste Afrekening van het jaar (een jaar heeft in mijn optiek nou eenmaal 52 weken). En hoe kan ik anders dan 2017 afsluiten dan met Jerry Williams op de eerste plek? Jerry heeft mijn muzikale leven verrijkt zoals het vroeger nog nooit verrijkt is en zal dat in 2018 vast en zeker blijven doen. Laat dat debuutalbum maar komen! HAERTS weet er nog een tweede plek uit te persen, voor Yotto. Lauran zakt wat maar moet toch nog even een shoutout krijgen voor de prachtige dingen die zij dit jaar heeft neergezet. Dat geldt trouwens al helemaal voor Alice Jemima, de maakster van het beste album van 2017. De Beauvengrens nadert en die gaat ze hoe dan ook halen. Om het even in perspectief te plaatsen: toen Home op plek 1 debuteerde was het nog zomervakantie. En om de sneeuwpopvreugde nog groter te maken: de vierde topontdekking in dat genre is deze week mijn hoogste binnenkomer met haar laatste single. Verder zijn er nog drie nieuwes in de weeklijst, waardoor mijn totaal aantal Afrekeningnummers over het gehele jaar nu komt te staan op:

Vergeet de appelbeignets in de avond, de klef zoenende stelletjes om twaalf uur stipt en de eventuele shotjes in de nacht: dít is het zoetste dat je op Oudejaarsavond tegen gaat komen. We zetten nog even de spotlights op Devin-Jade Eames, de 17-jarige Jerry light die nu al voor de derde keer mijn Afrekening haalt. Time Waster is van haar beduut-EP afkomstig en is de hemel voor een gesmolten sneeuwpop. Nog niet officieel uitgebracht als single (vandaar ook de liveopname in de embed, de link bevat wel de Spotifyversie), maar het krijgt al lokale airplay er daarmee volstaat het bij mij. Hup Devin, maak het Jerry maar lastig de komende jaren in de Sneeuwslag van Pompey.

BROCKHAMPTON - BOOGIE
Als je in één jaar tijd drie albums kan leveren die stuk voor stuk van hoge kwaliteit zijn én enkele topsingles afdragen dan ben je per definitie een stel bazen bij elkaar. Goed, het gezelschap is met vijftien en heeft dus wel de nodige taken kunnen verdelen maar dan alsnog is het bijzonder indrukwekkend. Zeker voor Kevin Abstract, het mastermind achter het collectief en eigenlijk verantwoordelijk voor zo’n beetje alles daaro. Zo ook Boogie, afkomstig van Saturation III en dat, zoals de naam al aangeeft, lekker funky en swingend is. En dik ook, want het blijft Brockhampton. Misschien wel mijn favoriet van ze tot dusver. Chloe is zonder backup van radiostations of labels al tot bijna 2 miljoen Spotifystream en een half miljoen (!) Facebookvolgers gereikt en daar is de 19-jarige best trots op: ze zou ons luisteraars vast en zeker willen zoenen zoals we nog nooit gezoend zijn. Of naja, het liedje bevat iets in die strekking maar zal vermoedelijk voor een wat specifieker iemand zijn. En de producties zijn professioneel goed, een soort kruising tussen Katy Perry en Taylor Swift. Oef, dat zijn namen.

GFriend - Summer Rain (여름비)
In de laatste week van 2016 maakte k-pop zijn debuut in mijn Afrekening en dat moet gevierd worden! Dus is het nu aan GFriend, een zestal dat in 2015 door het vrij kleine entertainmentbedrijf Source is opgericht. Want zo gaat dat daar nou eenmaal. Geen niveau AOA (jazeker, er zit weldegelijk kwaliteitsverschil tussen deze nummers) maar wel fijn melancholisch, om het jaar uit te zwaaien.

Jarami - Hear This
Jarami is een Zweeds duo dat onlangs al verantwoordelijk was voor de productie van Frank Oceans Chanel. Nu hebben ze de smaak dermate te pakken dat ze zelf ook maar nummers zijn gaan maken. Hear This is mijn eerste kennismaking met ze, een fijn stukje wonky electropop waar goed geluisterd is naar D.A.N.C.E. van Justice.

Johnny Marr & Maxine Peake - The Priest
Actrice meets multi-instrumentalist, resultaat is een lekker gruizig stukkie spoken word met zo’n heerlijk Manchester accent. Maxine vertelt het verhaal van een jonge, dakloze vrouw die haar dag doorkomt op zoek naar eten en een slaapplek; een groot maatschappelijk probleem in Manchester. Marr beats Morrissey hier wat mij betreft.

Oddisee - You Grew Up
Oddisee bleek al een tijdje terug te zijn maar dat had ik even gemist, gelukkig is daar Joe’s Weekly Reckoning voor. Ik heb het wel op zijn vaak soulvolle producties met sterke samples, zijn goede flow en zijn scherpe teksten. Deze nieuwe mag er, zeker op het laatstgenoemde vlak, zeker zijn. Een goed, maatschappijkritisch verhaal over hoe het belang van een goede opvoeding en het monster dat een slechte kan creëren.


Jaarafrekening komt waarschijnlijk morgen. Tot die tijd: fijne jaarwisseling en grab life in 2018!

Maar aan zo’n puntenlijst zitten natuurlijk nadelen: Ik heb vier keer geen lijst gemaakt en de nummers die daar punten mislopen hadden dus hoger kunnen staan, daarnaast heeft het ook nog te maken met de concurrentie die er op dat moment is; in februari/maart kwamen er meer liedjes uit dan in juli/augustus, dus die nummers hebben ook een voordeel. En er zijn nummers die je pas later echt goed bent gaan vinden en nummers die je eigenlijk niet meer kunt horen. Dat kun je natuurlijk willen corrigeren met berekeningen, maar je kunt ook gewoon een lijst maken met maar één criterium: mijn mening op 31 december over de nummers die in 2017 in mijn lijst hebben gestaan ?. En dat leidde tot de volgende top100:

Ik zal in 2018 terug proberen aan te haken. Ik ben in het najaar van job veranderd, en daardoor heb ik musicmeter op een laag pitje gezet. Bedankt voor de organisatie dit jaar! Puur gekeken naar deze top 20 was het best een matig muziekjaar. Zowel AF als The National en War on Drugs hebben albums uitgebracht die zeker niet in de buurt komen van hun beste werk.

Mijn grootste ontdekking qua albums is I Will Kill Again van Meursault geweest. I Will Kill Again is een tijdloos album, geweldig van begin tot einde. Verder eigenlijk geen echte 5 sterren-albums. Uiteraard wel genoeg losse nummers die 5 sterren verdienen.

Hier mijn top 50. Geen verrassing dat mijn grootste ontdekking van dit jaar Phoebe Bridgers bovenaan eindigt. Blij dat verschillende van mijn favorieten ook de eindlijst gehaald hebben.

We beginnen zo met bijvoorbeeld de nummer 100 een muziek virtuoos uit Ethiopië van 75 jaar oud die na bijna 30 eindelijk weer een nieuwe CD uit had gebracht.

Dit was mijn commentaar eind mei al en het muziekjaar is niet heel veel anders geworden. Ik kan weinig met beide bands en heb dan ook met Wolf Alice 1 top 10 notering.

In totaal kom ik 14 nummers tegen die in mijn lijsten hebben gestaan met 5 nummers 1.

Over bovenstaande lijst: mijn wekelijkse lijsten bestaan vanaf 1985. Van 1985 tot september 1987 heb ik niet alle lijsten meer en heb ik de tussenliggende lijsten een jaar of 10 geleden 'gereconstrueerd'. 1984 en 1983 (vanaf juni) heb ik toen ook meegenomen, omdat ik in juni 1983 begon met het wekelijks ophalen van de top 40 bij de plaatselijke platenzaak. Van 1987 tot september 1992 maakte ik twee keer per week een lijst, variërend van een top 100 tot (voor het grootste deel) een top 25. Deze heb ik later omgezet naar wekelijkse top 100 lijsten, door de lijst van maandag al uitgangspunt te nemen en aan te vullen met de platen die de donderdag ervoor nog in de lijst stonden en vervolgens alle nummers in volgorde van voorgaande lijsten tot ik aan 100 kwam. Dat was hem dan, 2017. Nog even een bedankje naar Herman, Kaj en Corneel voor het in goede banen leiden van de Afrekening en alle users voor de Tips.

In totaal hebben 199 nummers in de lijst gestaan over de afgelopen 52 weken; nog eens 406 nummers zijn in de Tip blijven steken of zitten er momenteel in. Dertien nummers hebben zich tenminste eenmaal het beste nummer van de week mgen noemen, wat correspondeert met een gemiddelde van exact vier weken per nummer. Hierdoor heeft mijn Afrekening niet de meest diverse top van allemaal, al komt dat met name doordat één artieste maar liefst zeventien weken het hoogste schavotje bestreek. Twaalf van de lijstaanvoerders zijn ook in de toptwintig van het jaar te vinden; First Aid Kit - You Are The Problem Here vinden we daarentegen pas terug op plek 91. De gehele top-199 heb ik uiteraard weer verpakt in een fancy Spotifylijstje.
