Na de spontane uitbarsting(en) nu een eerste nummer van de Strypes waarover is nagedacht. Het levert net als bij de Satellite Stories niet direct topplaatsen op. Wennen is het motto bij de nieuwe song van Muse, waar Sparks en Roger Waters buitengewoon vertrouwd klinken.

De ontwikkeling van Fleet Foxes gaat voor mij in een goede richting. Prachtige nieuwe song.

Deze week is The War on Drugs door gestegen naar plek 1. Ondanks dat het 11 minuut nog wat duurt, merk ik steeds meer dat dat geen enkel bezwaar is om het vaak te luisteren. The Veils volgen in het spoor, Ubu zakt wat, maar blijft in de top 3. Thinning van SnailMail wordt ook nog iedere week beter, dat had ik een paar weken geleden zeker niet gedacht. Dat geldt eigenlijk ook voor Girlpool; dat ook iedere week ietsjes stijgt. De vijf nieuwe van vorige week blijven een beetje hangen op de plek waar ze binnenkwamen.
Hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is Thomas Azier. Talk to me stond al hoog in het begin van het jaar; de singles daarna vond ik echt niks; maar deze is weer prachtig.
Alt-J heb ik net een half uur geleden voor het eerst gehoord, klinkt wat meer als 3WW (Dat ik eigenlijk nu een van de beste nummers van het jaar tot nu toe vind, maar in mijn lijst kwam het niet zo ver).
En de laatste nieuwe binnenkomer komt uit de tiplijst van vorige week, Kelly Lee Owens met een haast hypnotiserend liedje.

Jerry Williams blijft de luisterbeurten aaneenrijgen en ik blijf ook de hele tijd meer livemateriaal van haar ontdekken, wat tof is. Hopelijk komt ze binnenkort een keer naar Nederland, want het ziet er allemaal zeer smakelijk uit. Voorlopig blijft I’m Not In Love With You uiteraard ook gewoon op één. Ik heb hem onlangs al voorzichtig gebombardeerd tot mijn C’mon Please van 2017, een riskante uitspraak maar de ingrediënten zijn zeker aanwezig; het is al sinds Beau geleden dat een artiest zich zo in mijn hoofd kon nestelen.
Goed, genoeg Jerry (bij wijze van spreken dan, er is nooit genoeg Jerry). Antistar stijgt door naar twee, Naive To The Bone heeft duidelijk te lijden onder het mooie weer maar staat nog altijd podium. Meadowlark is doorgestegen naar plek vier. Amber Arcades verdwijnt na veertien weken, wat betekent dat Suus definitief deze tweestrijd gewonnen heeft. Zij stijgt in haar zeventiende week zelfs weer de toptien in. Verder hebben we vier nieuwe binnenkomers, waaronder weer enkele oude bekenden.

Hoe een ei te koken: We zullen het nooit weten want Courtney vertelt er verder niks over in haar liedje. Sowieso is het dit keer niet echt een verhalende tekst zoals in bijvoorbeeld Elevator Operator, Depreston of Dead Fox, wat jammer is want in die nummers is Courtney tekstueel op haar best, al blijft ze een fenomenaal tekstschrijver en zitten ook in deze weer enkele fraaie vondsten. Muzikaal is het ook weer direct weer vertrouwd nonchalant en ik ben blij dat ze deze ouwe terug heeft opgepoetst. En wat is een liedje zonder Courtneyvis?

Marika Hackman - Violet
Marika’s nieuwe plaat komt binnen een week uit, maar ik ben nog altijd niet op haar oude uitgeluisterd. Gezien haar nieuwe nummers lijkt Violet eigenlijk de perfecte overbrugging tussen We Slept At Last en I'm Not Your Man. Het rustige, ruimteljjke begin dat halverwege omslaat in het nieuwe, stevigere Hackmangeluid. Erg fraai.

Ja, ik weet dat ik inmiddels bij de helft van alle vrouwelijke artiesten zeg dat de stem op die van Florence Welsh trekt. Maar ook in dit geval moet ik hem maken, de Florence in de wat steviger, boziger nummers welteverstaan. Dit onder elektronische instrumentatie leidt tot een lekker popliedje.

Jagara - Let Me Go
Ik ben een beetje de (tamelijk riante) Spotifyplaylist van The Great Escape aan het doorspitten en daar staat - buiten de nummers één en twee van mijn huidige Afrekening - nog best wat leuks in. Het Londense Jagara bestaat uit zusjes Jane, Ruth en Cat. Hadden ze Jake, Ron en Chad geheten dan was het exact Future Islands: synthpop op hoog tempo met een duistere onertoon. Daar is op zijn weinig mis mee, en ze hebben dus nog hun vrouwelijke vocalen om zich te onderscheiden

MisterWives - Machine
Veel female fronted popbandjes in de Tip deze week, nog meer dan normaal. MisterWives is een Ameirkaanse formatie random de appetijtelijke Mandy Lee, die het oorspronkelijk als gelegenheidsbandje had opgestart als 80’s hits-coverbandje. Inmiddels is plaat twee een feit, dit nummer is de opener van hun nieuwe album en is ontzettend catchy, mede door slim gebruik van een sax guy.

Squidgenini - Alligator
Aparte artiestennaam, maar die past an sic hook wel bij het liedje. Kort, simplistisch en duister. Hoogtepuntjes zijn het spannende begin en de junglegeluiden op de achtergrond. Ook nog wat fijne synths. Het refrein is helaas een beetje ongeïnspireerd, maar deze Melbournse laat zeker talent zien en ik ga haar in de gaten houden.

Ik zie nu trouwens dat Tessa Rose Jackson terug is! En ze moest het me weer moeilijk maken, want ze heeft haar naam gewijzigd. Tessa noemt zich nu Someone en haar nieuwe nummer mag er zekers wezen, buiten het feit dat ze sowieso al een streepje voor heeft. Komt volgende week hoog binnen!

Doordat ik zelf een lang weekend weg ben geweest en vooral Giro d'Italia heb gekeken gedurende de resterende tijd, gaat mijn lijst van vorige week in de herkansing

Gisteren een ronduit briljant concert van Broken Social Scene gezien in Antwerpen, de focus lag vooral op hun ouder werk maar ook de enkele nieuwe nummers die de revue passeerden kwamen erg goed uit de verf. Ze stijgen dan ook flink in mijn lijst. De top 3 blijft desondanks ongewijzigd. De hoogste nieuwkomer is een erg sterk noiserock nummer van Downtown Boys. Hun debuutsingle op Sub Pop. Het doet me wat denken aan X-Ray Spex en ook aan een meer recente band als Sheer Mag.

Verder zijn er nog 5 nieuwkomers aan de onderkant van de lijst. Eerst zijn er twee oude bekenden, Alt-J en Marika Hackman. Cigarette is het laatste nummer dat Marika Hackman uit haar vrijdag te verschijnen plaat gelost heeft. Ik ben eigenlijk niet zeker of je dit wel een single kan noemen, maar het is desondanks toch wel het beste dat ik al uit haar nieuwste heb gehoord.

Naaz heb ik opgepikt door in het tiplijstje van Verweggistan te gaan spieken. Ondanks dat ik stilaan wat verzadigd raak van dit soort popliedjes bleef dit in mijn hoofd zitten.
Lapalux wordt op last.fm gelabeld als 'future garage'. Ik ben helemaal niet thuis in dit genre maar ik kwam dit nummer op verschillende blogs tegen en vond het erg intrigerend klinken. Tot slot brengt de band uit Brooklyn met de welluidende naam Crumb brengt een mooi laid-back en zoet liedje.

Ik las hier op het forum ergens iets over dat vrouwelijke muzikanten structureel ondergewaardeerd worden, maar bij mij is dat toch niet zo het geval. Deze week 6 nieuwe binnenkomers en bij 5 neemt een vrouw de vocalen voor haar rekening.

Hoogste nieuwe is van Aldous Harding, een Nieuw-Zeelandse. Wonderschoon intiem liedje, prachtige stem. Mooie productie van John Parrish, die we kennen van PJ Harvey. Verbaast me eigenlijk dat ik deze nog niet in andere lijstjes zie. Ik denk dat het wel iets is voor Gretz en wellicht 123poetertjes.

Van een heel ander laken en pak zijn de beats van progressive house veteraan Sasha, die Poliça-zangeres Channy Leaneagh achter de microfoon mocht verwelkomen. Lange meeslepende track.

Broken Social Scene's nieuwe luisterde ik net voor het eerst in de trein op weg naar huis en was na een warme, lange dag precies de juiste track op het juiste moment. Een loom, maar toch ook wel spannend nummer door de fijne stem van Leslie Feist, die blijkbaar helemaal terug is dit jaar (met band en solo).

De Française Maud Geffray's roept enerzijds beelden op van ijsbrekers die zich een weg banen door het poolgebied, anders klinkt het nummer bij vlagen ook tintelfris en lenteachtig. Ergens tussen Lana del Rey en Bel Canto of shoegaze en electronica.

Sink Ya Teeth is een damesduo uit Norwich en If You See Me is hun debuutsingle. Lekkere post-punkbaslijn in de traditie van bands als ESG en The Raincoats. Ze staan binnenkort in het voorprogramma van !!! zie ik, dus ergens in dat hoekje zit het ook wel een beetje.

Depeche Mode's nieuwe album heb ik nog niet gehoord, maar afgaand op de singles is het wel een plaat die goed in de politieke tijdsgeest past. Net als Where's The Revolution is dit er een die met de draaibeurt beter wordt.

Weinig verschuivingen in de top deze week. De grootste stijger is Ti Amo van Phoenix, omdat het een lekker catchy nummer is dat past bij het warme weer van deze week, maar vooral ook omdat mijn dochter van net 1 er zo schattig op 'danst'.
