In mijn persoonlijke trip down memory lane door de top 40 jaren van 1983 t/m 1992 (niet geheel toevallig de jaren van mijn 10e t/m mijn 20e) zijn we op de helft. De top 3 van de voorgaande edities zag er als volgt uit:

Een raar jaar, dat 1988. Geen grote hypes, geen grote albumreleases maar wel de opkomst van vrouwelijke singer-songwriters zoals Sinead O'Connor, Tracy Chapman en Tanita Tikaram. Daarnaast scoorden vooral Toto en Salt 'n Pepa hits en werden de hitlijsten bevolkt door voetballiedjes. 1988: Nog altijd een magisch jaar voor de voetballiefhebber.

De spelopzet blijft gelijk aan eerdere edities:
- De bovenste 256 van de top 40-jaarlijst doen mee. Dus: geen albumtracks, geen keuzelijst. Ik pak de 256 grootste hits, inclusief nummers van bijvoorbeeld Normaal, Andre van Duin, Pussycat en allerlei ander moois uit het doelbewuste jaar. Als bron gebruik ik deze site: http://www.michajans.nl/. Een plaat kan dus in meerdere edities meedoen. Het officiële verschijningsjaar telt niet mee, het gaat er puur om of de plaat is opgenomen in de bovenste 256 van de jaarlijst.
- Er wordt gespeeld in ladderverband, in ladders van 8 met puntentelling 4-3-2-1
- Per ladder gaan de bovenste vier door
- Per keer wordt 1 jaar gespeeld en 1 laddercompetitie duurt ongeveer 1 maand
- Alle lotingen zijn volstrekt willekeurig en er volgen geen herkansingsladders o.i.d. Bij gelijke standen wordt gekeken naar eerdere resultaten in het spel. Bij gelijke stand in de eerste ronde is de positie op de jaarlijst doorslaggevend.Dit alles vergroot wellicht niet de representativiteit maar zorgt wel voor een verhoogd spelelement. Niets leuker dan een echte poule des doods.
- De finale wordt gespeeld met 16 nummers waarvan die volgorde tot stand komt via ingestuurde lijstjes.
- Er worden twee ladders per dag gespeeld.
