8. Rolling Moon (1982) 27 punten van 5 stemmers

De eerste single. Er werd een videoclip voor gemaakt, maar helaas raakten de beelden zoek. Veel later werden ze gelukkig teruggevonden en op Youtube gezet. Je ziet in een vlakte de bandleden dansen bij een open vuur, passend bij de tekst van het nummer. Martyn Bull was er helaas wegens ziekte niet bij.

Mooi aan dit nummer vind ik o.a. de tempo-overgang bij het refrein.

7. Effloresce and Deliquesce (1990) 28 punten van 5 stemmers



Je zou best de enige kunnen zijn ja

De woorden uit de titel ken ik niet, maar deliquesce is iets als smelten, en effloresce denk ik hier een soort van tegenovergestelde, van vloeibaar poeder worden. Vast symbolisch bedoeld, maar waar het lied over gaat is me niet helemaal duidelijk.

6. House With a Hundred Rooms (1987) 27 punten van 6 stemmers, nummer 1 van motel matches

Ook hier is de titel vast symbolisch. Ik gok dat de ik-figuur bedoelt dat zijn huis ruimte biedt voor jou.

5. Doledrums (1984) 30 punten van 8 stemmers, nummer 1 van wendyvortex

Het woord doledrums staat niet in het woordenboek, maar het is ook gebruikt (in enkelvoud) op The La's - The La's (1990) - MusicMeter.nl. Het is ongetwijfeld afgeleid van het woord doldrum, dat "a state or period of inactivity, stagnation, or slump" kan betekenen maar ook een depressie. En "On the dole" betekent steuntrekker zijn. De ikfiguur in de tekst is inderdaad werkeloos en niet al te gelukkig. Ik las ergens dat Phillips last van depressies heeft gehad, dus mogelijk is het autobiografisch.

De video is nogal nietszeggend, de band was er ook niet zo blij mee.

Ook hier weer een tempowisseling!

4. Rain (1987) 33 punten van 6 stemmers

Dit nummer valt vooral op doordat de zang soms morrisseyaans de hoogte ingaat.

3. Wet Blanket (1987) 38 punten van 6 stemmers, nummer 1 van mijzelf.

"'Wet Blanket' is the first real love song I wrote. It was kind of written as a lure, a hook, in the hope that I would be singing it and some woman would just think I was so amazing that she want to get to know me. Unfortunately subsequent girlfriends have assumed it was written about them, so it has become a bit of problem! It was never a big single at the time but it is one of our most popular songs live over the years and I still play it in my solo sets too."

2. Heavenly Pop Hit (1990) 50 punten van 6 stemmers, #1 van Shaky en johan de witt

Ooit waren mijn ouders naar bed, ik nog niet en ik ging MTV kijken. Dit nummer kwam langs en ik was meteen fan. Van het nummer dan, maar later ontdekte ik dat ze nog veel meer mooie nummers gemaakt hadden.

"Some people thought it was a tongue-in-cheek song, but it really was a song about exuberance and feeling great and the power of melodic rock to lift you up and take you places and transform your life. It is filled with all sorts of fanciful imagery.

The only problem is that because I am only a rudimentary self taught musician I really didn't understand the concept of writing songs in a key you could sing them. This is actually written too high for me to sing now when we play live."

1. Pink Frost (1984) 77 punten van 10 stemmers, #1 van likeahurricane, koosknook en Choconas

Het enige nummer van The Chills dat in de MuMeladder staat wint, niet verrassend lijkt me, maar het had niet veel gescheeld of dit nummer was er nooit geweest. De eerder genoemde Martyn Bull deed mee op dit nummer en werd ziek (leukemie). Daarna stopte The Chills: in eerste instantie in de hoop dat hij zou herstellen, daarna was het te pijnlijk voor Phillips om de naam The Chills te gebruiken. De platenmaatschappij drong echter aan om dat toch te doen, omdat ze een band met een bekende naam nodig hadden.

De in 1982 opgenomen versie van Pink Frost was niet helemaal goed en daarom bleef het op de plank liggen. In 1984 werd het nummer opnieuw gemixt en die versie was gelukkig goed genoeg om uit te brengen.

"'Pink Frost' was one of the few songs which came to me almost fully formed. Apart from the two little intro sections, the music came to me in about an hour and it had such a haunting feeling I had to come up with lyrics which would suit it. So I had the idea of someone having killed their girlfriend while they were asleep and waking up to find out, which is pretty grim. I was horrified to find out later that it actually did happen to someone too.

It is still one of our most popular songs. I wrote it in 1982 when the band was very new and I was just discovering I was a songwriter. It was all new to me so there was no long term plan we were haphazard about the way we approached things, until people pointed out we should go overseas where people like John Peel were already playing our singles. "

Dank Poek voor de The Chills. In 1985 ontdekt via Oor en De Wilde Wereld (en de andere Flying Nun label genoten). Daarna was The Chills mijn allereerste concert dat ik heb bezocht.

Of op Heavenly Pop Hit dat kan straks al in de eerste ronde. Even wat typewerk nog. dank voor The Chills, fijn bandje is dat toch wel hoor!
