In 2004 selecteerde James Henke, hoofdconservator van de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, met de hulp van muziekjournalisten en -critici, 500 nummers die volgens hen de grootste invloed hebben gehad op de ontwikkeling van rock'n'roll. De lijst is alfabetisch gerangschikt op artiest en terug te vinden als fysieke lijst in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In tegenstelling tot ranglijsten als “beste” of “mooiste” songs gaat het hier om de historische en culturele impact, met als uitgangspunt:



Behalve dat vele mensen de lijst komen bezoeken in de hall of fame, wordt de lijst vooral gebruikt voor:

• educatie
• tentoonstellingen
• radio- en tv-series
• en als historisch referentiekader

Deze lijst 500 Songs That Shaped Rock’n’Roll wordt gezien als dé basiscanon van rockgeschiedenis. Op een gegeven moment werd echter besloten dat er nummers ontbreken in de lijst, en de lijst werd met 160 songs uitgebreid tot 660. De naam 660 Songs That Shaped Rock'n'Roll bekt niet zo lekker, en de originele naam wordt nog steeds gebruikt.

Prachtig initiatief het op papier zetten van de canon van de muziek, maar wat vinden wij van die canon nou eigenlijk de écht beste songs? Laten we dat puur wetenschappelijk gaan aantonen op de enige daadwerkelijk ware, geijkte en exacte manier: middels een KO op MusicMeter.

Zoals bekend: volledig open loting, alles en iedereen kan tegen elkaar.

Ik heb de loting wel nagelopen om te kijken of artiesten die met 2 songs in de lijst van 660 songs niet meteen zichzelf geloot hebben in ronde 1, dat zou wel erg sneu zijn. Was niet het geval, maar toch even openheid van zaken geven.

Wat betreft hofleveranciers (The Beatles en The Rolling Stones allebei met 8 songs); die mogen zichzelf gerust in ronde 1 al loten, die hebben zat ijzers in het vuur. Spoiler: ook dat kwam niet voor, zag ik bij het nalopen van de battles.

Al meteen een leuke ontdekking. Die ander is natuurlijk een absolute klassieker.

Mooie lijst met wat opvallende keuzes.
Maar soms twijfel je wel aan de capaciteiten van die muziekcritici/-journalisten, als je kijkt bij bijvoorbeeld een U2. Daar staat I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For vermeld, maar dan geen Where the Streets Have No Name, of With or Without You van hetzelfde album. Maar goed dat zijn hun keuzes geweest.
