Ik doe al enige weken erg mijn best om de single Sailing van Mike Oldfield goed te vinden. Als groot liefhebber van Moonlight Shadow (1983) en To France (1984) wil ik de sensatie van een nieuw, vergelijkbaar nummer zo graag weer eens meemaken. Maar het mag niet lukken. Het vlamt echt veel te weinig en het ontbeert de vocalen van Maggie Reilly.

Daarom steek ik mijn tijd (in dit geval) liever in nieuw en voor mij onbekend werk dat ik deze week heb gevonden. Zo had ik nog nooit gehoord van Foster the People of Amber Run. Beide bands zijn van harte aan te bevelen, prima singles. Ik ga straks eens alles over ze lezen wat ik zo snel kan vinden.

Satellite Stories, The Villagers en Placebo zijn dan minder nieuw. Maar ze hebben wel een abonnement op prachtige, sfeervolle en/of vrolijke nummers.

Dat 2014 lang niet zo hard van start is gegaan qua muziek als 2013 is inmiddels wel duidelijk, maar ik klaag zeker niet met vier sterke binnenkomers. Morbus Chron verraste me met zijn psychedelische death metal die tegelijkertijd progressief en old school klinkt, Crosses (nummer 7) is weer een mooi project van Chino Moreno (Deftones) waarin hij zijn electronicinvloeden meer laat horen. Dephosphorus maakt tegendraadse grindcore met krankzinnige vocalen en The Sore Losers is gewoon lekkere rock.

Een nieuwe nummer 1: het concert van Bombay Bicycle Club in de Melkweg begin deze week was erg goed. Op plaat vind ik ze al prima, maar live is het een fijne mix van britpop, jangle pop met zelfs wat vleugjes mariachi en dance. Goeie samenzang ook. Luna is kortom nog meer tot leven gekomen.

Dan nog een tipje voor de meesten hier. Onderstaande doet me wat denken aan The War on Drugs, maar zelf vind ik dit veel beter dan hun laatste single die hier hoge ogen gooit (vind dat een beetje klinken als een outtake/mindere kopie van hun vorige album). Met name de laatste minuten zijn erg lekker.

• Hoewel ik A Christmas Fucking Miracle niet zo vaak geluisterd heb de afgelopen week blijft dit nummer mijn lijst aanvoeren. De achtervolgende nummers zijn erg leuk, maar komen kwalitatief gewoon tekort. Door de sterke nieuwe aanwas deze week verwacht ik niet dat Run the Jewels deze positie nog een week vasthoudt.
• Mijn favoriete Belgische bandje heeft een nieuwe single. Oscar and the Wolf voegt hier volop elektronische elementen toe aan hun o, zo pure en breekbare muziek. Hiermee ondermijnen ze juist datgene dat deze band zo bijzonder maakte. Een goed nummer is het zeker, maar ik baal een beetje van de koerswijziging.
• De zwoele klanken van zangeres Indiana in combinatie met een spannende elektronische beat levert een ijzersterke single op. Solo Dancing komt daarom met stip mijn top 5 binnen.
• Nieuwe binnenkomers Augustines, The War on Drugs en Blood Red Shoes zorgen voor een frisse dosis rockmuziek in mijn lijst. An Animal lost de vorige single van Blood Red Shoes af.

En omdat 20 eigenlijk nooit genoeg is:

Een verzameling singles die mijn lijst net niet gehaald hebben of er net uit zijn verdwenen. School Is Cool, Esben and the Witch en Crosses zijn de interessantste nieuwe ontdekkingen van afgelopen week en staan op de eerste rang om volgende week te promoveren naar mijn Single Best 20. Daarachter zijn ook Snowbird, Villagers en iamamiwhoami de moeite waard.
