04. 230 * Blondie - Heart of Glass



Blondie wordt gemakkelijkheidshalve bij de punk of new wave gerekend.
Maar wie goed naar hun hits luistert, weet dat ze veel meer stijlen beheersten.

Disco was er eentje van en Heart of Glass was in die categorie hun mooiste.
Hoewel Blondie begon in het New Yorks punk circuit en ze met Parallel Lines
hun meest complete album afleverden, werden de hits belangrijker dan de LP's.

Ook in 1980 zaten drie kandidaten, waarvan ik er eentje heb weggelaten.

Rock With You vind ik ietsjes minder maar nog steeds een erg lekkere song

En met I Don't Like Mondays, een song die we mogen omdat het eigenlijk een Queen pastiche is.

Ik hoor dat totaal niet. Op welke Queen-song zou dit moeten lijken?

03. 232 * Tubeway Army - Are Friends Electric



Ik koos voor een live-clip die het koud elektronische nummer iets meer ziel geeft.
Je hoort ook goed dat Tubeway Army nog met één been in de glamrock seventies staat.

Zingen kan Gary Numan niet, maar dat is ook niet nodig voor zijn androïde act.
Cars haalde ook nog een weekje de top in de UK en het is werkelijk gek om te zien
hoe Are Friends Electric? daar een megaseller was en in de Benelux een culthit werd.

En culthits halen altijd meer bijval in spelletjes op MuMe.

Dat jaar in het voorprogramma van de grote Gary Numan: het piepjonge OMD.

In de koortjes en de pianobegeleiding gaat het nummer richting Bohemian Rhapsody.
Maar het is niet omdat ik het hoor, dat jij het daarom moet horen natuurlijk.

Wat ik ook bedoelde: het is een nummer dat blijkbaar wat afwijkt
van de Boomtown Rats catalogus, want die wordt verder niet door veel users hier gesmaakt.

02. 241 * Police - Message in a Bottle



Ik had getipt op The Police als winnaars, maar zilver is ook mooi genoeg.
Misschien wel het definitieve Police nummer dat nog iets meer inzet op rock dan pop.
De opvolger Walking on the Moon had iets te weinig top 3 noteringen (enkel UK) voor een selectie.

Het beste stuk van het nummer zit voor mij achteraan,
wanneer Andy Summers gaat soleren en Stewart Copeland zich te pletter tikt op de hi-hats.
Moet je trouwens eens op letten hoe die Copeland voortdurend inkleurt op de symbalen.

Ik snap de adoratie voor Tubeway Army niet.
Winnaar is Pink Floyd natuurlijk en dat is terecht.

01. 249 * Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall



Hoe vaak hebben we deze niet meegebruld op de speelplaats?

Ik las dat Roger Waters het wel erg slim (en gemakkelijk?) speelde door in volle no future tijdperk
in te spelen op de uitzichtloosheid en het misnoegen van een jonge generatie toekomstige werklozen.

Met deze drie minuten hit gaf de voor symfo-dino versleten band alle punkers lik op stuk.
En wie speelde ook al weer de hoofdrol in de bijhorende film... juist, die Bob Geldof van daarnet.

Daar kan ik niet anders dan het mee eens zijn. Helaas is dat laatste dus helemaal waar. Ik heb een mooi boxje met al hun albums en die zijn over het algemeen meer dan de moeite waard. Maar inderdaad veel Mondays achtig materiaal staat er niet op. De gemiddeldes zijn hier om te huilen, wellicht is het Bob Geldof die met zijn Live Aid gebeuren niet in de smaak valt. Ook Bono krijgt daardoor veel kritiek op zijn voorkomen.

Weer bijna allemaal platen die ik graag nog eens hoor!

Ik vind dat juist 1 van hun minste, de andere Call Me dan weer juist 1 van de sterkste (oke, Hanging on theTelephone is beter).

Het kan raar lopen in 1 jaar

En ze hadden ook nog Atomic in dit jaar, een van hun beste singles.

The Tide is High was het begin van het einde voor Blondie. Hierna kwamen nog Rapture en Island of Lost Souls (hun minste single)

Ow ja Atomic, een cover van The Party Animals

Drie keer Blondie was een optie,
maar Atomic scoorde enkel top 3 plaatsen in de UK.
Dus leek het me logischer om Call Me (de absolute topper van 't jaar in de US)
en The Tide Is High (top 3 in meerdere landen) boven Atomic te verkiezen.

Drie singles van dezelfde artiest doe ik wel eens,
als die artiest er meer dan 3 in de aanbieding heeft dat jaar.

Maar... ik vind Atomic ook net iets beter dan The Tide Is High.
