Die koers lijkt wel gelopen en ik ben best verguld met een plek in de finale voor Some Velvet Morning.

De tegenstander? In de sterren staat Red Sun, maar er is wederom een ander hemellichaam dat de uitdaging aangaat. De laatste langspeler The Ruby Sea had nog een afvaardiging tegoed in dit spel en die achterstand maken we nu dubbel en dwars goed. Want om 'Hunters Moon' te bereiken, moeten we eerst 'Up To Midnight'.

De laatste zij-instromer, mijn favoriet van Thin White Rope, is dus Hunters Moon met daarbij als intro het duet Up To Midnight. Beide thematisch verbonden tracks staan op de plaat aaneengesloten, slechts gescheiden door een subtiele klik in de drumtrack. Persoonlijk vind ik dat de nummers bij elkaar horen, en de samensteller van deze opmerkelijke verzamelaar vond dat kennelijk ook. Moeten nu beide nummers integraal beoordeeld worden? Dat mag, een ieder kan daarin de vrijheid nemen. Want Red Sun gaat toch door : - )

Mijn kennismaking met Thin White Rope en geen verkeerde!

Ik heb Up to Midnight wel meegerekend waardoor mijn voorkeur toch naar Red Sun uitviel.

4-1. Waarom Up To Midnight en Hunter's Moon? Ik vind hun laatste 3 albums toch het beste. En The Ruby Sea zit gewoon heel goed in elkaar.

Worden de twee nummers Red Sun en Some Velvet Morning morgen de finale. De twee songs waarmee Thin White Rope, The Pixies van het podium speelde. Ook al was Thin White Rope het voorprogramma destijds. Maar ik vond ze vele male beter dan de grote ontdekking in 88.

En inderdaad, dat is de uitkomst. Een finale zonder al te veel subtiliteiten. Hard bulderende gitaren versus nog harder bulderende gitaren. Amplified Tom Waits versus Bob Dylan during exorcism. Bring The Noise

Blij verrast was ik over de appreciatie van Not Your Fault, al had ie nooit voorbij Disney Girl mogen komen (aerobag : Your Fault ). Nog blijer verrast ben ik over de opkomst en de reacties, want de K.O. was toch vooral opgezet om een lampje te zetten op deze bijna vergeten band. Dan wil ik tenslotte van itchy nog wel eventjes weten bij welk van de finalisten hij de zang het langste trekt. Het intro van de eerste zal schelen

TIJD VOOR THE BEACH BOYS KO!!!!

Het was dus zo dat ik uit nieuwsgierigheid even wou opzoeken welk nummer de KO van The Beach Boys ooit gewonnen had. Maar na drie keer de lijst doorlopen kwam ik tot de toch wel schokkende conclusie dat deze nog niet gespeeld was.
Daar moet natuurlijk verandering in komen. Want wat mij betreft is dit toch echt wel een legendarische band, die zeker niet alleen maar legendarische muziek gemaakt heeft. Maar wel heel wat pareltjes en nummers die van grote invloed zijn geweest op de ontwikkeling van de popmuziek in zijn algemeen.
Onlangs nog de intrigerende autobiografie van Brian Wilson (Ik ben Brian Wilson) gelezen, waarin je enig zicht krijgt op zijn getroubleerde geest. Maar die geest, maar zeker ook het geheel van The beach Boys, heeft heel wat opmerkelijke en vernieuwende muziek voortgebracht.

De startlijst is samengesteld uit alle hitnoteringen in Nederland, alle top 20-noteringen in de VS, aangevuld met de albumfavorieten (ik neem aan dat niemand me kwalijk neemt dat enkele albums met een gemiddelde beneden de drie sterren niet vertegenwoordigd zijn) en een enkele persoonlijke favoriet. En dan zit je vrij gemakkelijk aan 64 nummers, namelijk deze:
