Animal Collective: New Album "Back to Our Roots" | News | Pitchfork

The band members all moved back to the Baltimore area to record together. Weitz said, "We got a little practice space in this barn on Josh [Dibb, aka Deakin]'s mom's property and it was basically like being a garage band again." That means you'll find less sampling on Centipede Hz than on Merriweather, and more organic instrumentation. "This one we wrote more as a rock band in a room and we wanted to record it that way as well."

Maakt me benieuwd hoe erg AC terug in de tijd is gegaan?

Krijgen we straks AC goes LedZep

beste album cover ooit.

Interview Rolling Stone

Animal Collective's blissed out 2009 LP, Merriweather Post Pavilion, made them the indie kings of 21st-century pscychedlelia - but the band wouldn't dream of repeating itself on the follow-up. "For better or for worse, if we feel like we've gotten into a habit of something we make a 180 degree turn," says guitarist Josh Dibb (a.k.a. Deakin).

So in January 2011, the band mates- including multi-instrumentalists Noah Lennox (a.k.a. Panda Bear), Dave Portner (a.k.a. Avey Tare) and Brian Weitz (a.k.a. Geologist)- returned to their hometown of Baltimore and holed up at Dibb's mother's house, jamming together every day for three months like they used to in high school. "It's a pretty aggressive, relentless record," Dibb says of Animal Collective's 10th LP, Centipede Hz, due this fall. "That probably comes from four dudes in a room writing music with really loud amps. It feels like an 18-year-old with a garage band."

Early this year the band took the new tunes to Sonic Ranch studios, hidden deep inside a pecan orchard outside El Paso, Texas. While Merriweather was built mostly around electronic beats, this time Lennox played live drums. The band also cut back on the radiant vocal arrangements that defined the last LP. "There was definitely a group choice to focus a lot more on individual voices rather than layered harmony vocals," Dibb says. "We've done so much of that in the past."

The group has already released two recent outtakes: the bouncy, head-spinning "Honeycomb" and the heart-wrenching, futuristic "Gotham." Dibb's current favorite tracks include "Father Time" and "Monkey Riches," which is full of manic, manipulated vocals. "It's energetic and emotional- there's just something about it that's trance-y."

Centipede Hz is the first Animal Collective LP that Dibb worked on since 2007, following an extended break for personal reasons. "I was just essentially really fragile," says the guitarist. "I could tip over from feeling good to feeling really overwhelemed." Dibb's hiatus- which included a 2010 trip to Mali, and a few gigs in Europe opening for bandmate Lennox- left him feeling recharged. Says Dibb, "I definitely have a renewed sense of appreciation of the work I put into the band."

While the bandmates are now well into their thirties, and two have young kids, they're still hoping to create mind-expanding sonic experiences. "We all talk and think about music in psychedelic terms," Dibb says. "Just in the way edges can blur between sound, or lyrics can indicate multiple ideas."

Animal Collective have announced only a handful of shows for this year, including a night at L.A.'s Hollywood Bowl in September, but more U.S. dates are coming. Says Dibb, "We need to find the balance of being really psyched on the road and not being burnt out or tearing apart your family."

Eerste single is ondertussen beschikbaar!
Klinkt als een mix tussen MPP en Here comes the indian.
Moeilijk te definiëren but i like it!

Moonjock – first sound of the album is someone saying ‘this is the news’ then a warped countdown leads in to massive industrial staccato processed drums and guitar hits. This song is HUGE! Double tracked avey vocals. Big harmonised chorus (avey and avey!). Really manic and energetic. Some nice little screamy bits. Its travelling song. Lyrics about being on the road and driving south of the border listening to the radio. Reminds of what I wish winter wonderland had turned out like. The transition is really long and full of laser blasts and voice snippets. Another stunning opener.

Today’s Supernatural – in the context of the album this song is even better. Working so well as track 2. The chorus feels bigger and the momentum of the song really makes the album charge in its opening tracks. Panda’s drumming on this tune is really indicative of the whole album. So are the way Avey’s vocals are recorded and Geo’s mega-effort. He seriously owns.

Rosie Oh – on second listen once again its Geo who steals the show. That perky guitar sounds great and I really dig the drier Panda vocals. I cannot possibly imagine anyone being disappointed with the way this one has turned out. Abundant bouncy and crazy sounds. The ending leads really well into Applesauce (you’ll forget about Crimson after a couple of listens).

Applesauce – Avey is darting around everywhere. The melodies on this one are fantastic. He repeats ‘I feel like a little honey can roll’. The sweetness reminds me of Bluish but the style is more energetic/upbeat than that. Cheers Panda. This song is also pretty epic! The vocals are layered but unlike previous albums where this has been the case it’s all one member. If it is an Avey song, then the major harmonies are also Avey.

Wide Eyed – As I said earlier, Deeks is more restrained than the boots. This performance has nice subtleties and is less shouted than the live versions. I dig it. At times I feel like this what Yeasayer could achieve if they had AC’s level of rad. The way the sounds kind of skim and skitter across this song is fantastic. All grounded by that pounding beat. Love the outro, it really grows and grows in intensity and makes that laugh so much more disturbing.

Father Time – the additional percussion really adds to this tune. It perks up the really cruisy momentum. Once again didn’t notice the choir!

New Town Burnout – Fuck yes. As soon as that beat starts I know my mind is about to be detonated again! The little changes to the vocal melody are awesome. Nothing lost, just more added. Once again, Panda’s voice is drier. However, it is clearly doubletracked. The wash of noise around Panda and the beat is absorbing. When that instrumental section hits it is absolute beauty once again. Sex outdoors. Pure passion. Hair in the sunlight. Bliss. The end is really pleading ‘Lift this weight’. He sounds heavy. There is a little Panda transition vocal improv stuff on the word ‘Light’. Wonderful.

Monkey Riches – Bass is prominent and sweet. Rounded and fun. Once again, noises just fill the mix. Second verse still has that ‘don’t want that tylenol’ bit as overdubbed ‘backing’ vocals (though it is really high in the mix). Really feeling the build in this song. Awesome descending deeks guitar part during the second ‘monkey rich’ chorus. Love the industrial breakdown even more the second time. They have really fleshed out this jam into a bro-sport style epic. Saving the screams til the final chorus really makes it hit home. Too many sounds to describe during the ‘lalala’ closing section. This and NTB are the centrepieces of the album and are both phenomenal. Like the Fwx/Rev green combo on SJ.

Mercury Man – sparkling sounds send this into the sky. Crashing cymbals during the pre-chorus ground it again. The second half of this is so rad. The ‘ooohohohooooohhh’ part is spooky as mentioned and there are random avey screams shooting around in the background. Guttural, emotive screams.

Pulleys – intro has an awesome clash of alien take off noises and earthy piano and percussion. Kind like Rosie Oh, No More Runnin’… fuck it, not like anything else. It’s a really interesting tune. It feels different for them somehow.

Amanita – retro-futuristic Arabian synth jam! Drums sound like tablas. Almost an 80s feel at times. Once again Yeasayer if they had AC level rad and a singer with more personality. That’s the first half of the song. The transition halfway through reminds me of gang gang dance. It is beaty and dirty and sounds like 80s world music fed through a food processor. Then Avey starts spitting his ‘I have way too many words for this melody’ lines. Awesome. The ending is great too. The machine coming to a stop feels so right.
