Seven up Portugal trash North Korea
Football fans,
The first match gave us a stunning start of the day when Portugal ripped North Korea apart to secure themselves as good as certain a place in the next round. The match was a re-run of one of the most famous matches in World Cup history, 44 years on from the memorable day when North Korea led 3-0 before being overhauled by a four-goal Eusebio blast.
And also now the North Koreans didn't start too bad but a beautiful combination around half an hour play was finished in style by midfielder Meireles. Half time 1-0 and not too much to worrow for the Koreans but it was a different story in the second half. Portugal, with finally a brilliant Cristiano Ronaldo, was devastating. And their appetite for goals was insatiable as they kept pooring forward at every opportunity till the end. 7-0 it was in the end with special attention for goal number six, when Ronaldo tries to slip the ball past the goalie, it bounces into the air, hits Ronaldo on the back of his neck, bobbles on to his head and he keeps his cool to volley in when lands from 10 yards. It was Ronaldo's first goal for Portugal since a long time. I guess the Koreans where very happy to hear the referee blowing the final whistle that puts them out of their misery. I heard this was the first footballmatch of the Korean team that was broadcasted live in North Korea....I am afraid the big leader Kim Jong-il will not be too amused with this result and performance.
In Group H Chile booked it second successive win with another impressive play and again really attractive football. Man of the match was no doubt Saudi referee Khali Al Ghamdi who started with a yellow card in the first minute and ended with a yellow card in the 91th minute, another 8 yellow cards in between and one red card (a record so far in this World Cup edition beating the nine cards of Germany - Serbia). Chile, no doubt was the better team again playing fresh and attacking football trying to break the stubborn defensive Switzerland. They created a lot of chances but had to wait till the 74th minute before they finally had success.
Ít's very entertaining to watch Chile but I have an awful feeling they're going to regret wasting some of those chances with the last game against Spain coming up as it might happen that they will be kicked out on goal difference.
In the evening Spain met Honduras. A comfortable victory for Del Bosque's team, although they scored just two goals of David Villa (especially the first one was beautiful, a cracking strike finding the top corner of the net from the edge of the box) and it should have been much much more (and didn't Villa deserved a red card for slapping a Honduran defender in the face?). But then again, it doesn't matter how many they missed, the European Champions are up and running now in the World Cup 2010. They still need to win their last game against Chile though to secure a place in the next round.

Scores and Ranking:
What does this all mean for the ranking. It was an excellent day for Els 4 Gats (the Catalan team), Frank Geertjens, Manuel Guzman, Miguel Alvariño Gil, Miguel Fernandez Hernanz, Phil Drinkwater, Rimco Boelaarts and Stuart Pham all scoring 35 points. It's no wonder that we see the same people amongst the biggest movers up today with Stuart Pham being on top of that list gaining 55 positions before Els 4 Gats and Frank Geertjens with 54 places up.
Lowest scoring number of points today by the way was 10, which was the case for 17 participators. For Filip Goyvaerts, Kurt Verlinden and Michele Cominacini this meant losing 59 positions in the ranking.
We have 5 leaders now all scoring 125 points and keeping the price winning positions for the intermediate price winning ranking after the group face. It's Bart Tubee, Martin Roquiero, Miguel Alvariño Gil, Rui Cortez and Stefan Rijnders on top now.
They are followed with 5 points difference only by Alex Gosselt, Hans Dijkstra, Koen Rubens and Raymond Papenburg.
At the bottom of the ranking we find Mieke van Acker and Pierre Dubois with 55 points, Kobe Schrooten with 50 points, Brian Woods with 40 points and the red lantarn is still firmly held by Jeroen Delmeire with 35 points.
Find back your ranking in the attached file and don't hesitate to ask me if you think something is wrong.

Tomorrow :
Tomorrow the final matches of Group A and Group B are played and another 4 teams will be known that join Holland and Brazil to the last 16.
First of all group A. Well I hope their will be two matches played since I am not sure if the French will find 11 players that are willing to play...sorry for the French participators but what a soap is going on here...unbelievable. I better not spend too many words on it.
France and South Africa are facing each other and both have a very very very small chance to survive, they both have to win this match with at least 3 goals difference and hope then that Uruguay and Mexico don't settle for a draw. I wonder what the last two teams will do and especially Mexico, do they want to take any risks since a draw for them means the second place but most likely facing Argentina in the next round, not exactly something to look forward too.
France is favorite in the match against South Africa for 138 participators (I wonder if this still is the case), 13 go for Bafana Bafana and 30 for a draw. Despite all the problems the French are facing at the moment, good luck to all the French partipators.
Mexico is favorite in their match against Uruguay, 76 people see them win, 47 see Uruguay win and 58 think it will be a draw.
If we are looking at the endranking, it's either Uruguay or Mexico winning this group, 34 participators predicted Forlan''s team, 36 predicted Hernandez's team.
In the evening it's time for the final matches in group B. Argentina can only loose qualification if they loose their last match against Greece with 3 goals difference and if at the same time South Korea beats Nigeria....not a likely scenario, specifically not the first part. Looking at the predictions Argentina is clearly favorite to beat Greece, 151 votes for them. Only Pilar Pérez Mariño has faith in a Greek victory, the remaining 29 participators go for a draw.
In the other match between Nigeria and South Korea, the majority of you have faith in Nigeria, 123 participators to be precise. 20 people however think South Korea will win and 38 settle for a draw.
Looking at the endranking of Group B anything can happen and all 4 teams can still qualify for the next round. Nevertheless, it's pretty safe to say that Argentina will win this group looking at the current ranking. But for place 2 anything can happen, even Nigeria can still survive this group after 2 previous defeats, but only if they beat South Korea and Argentina beat Greece. But if South Korea beats Nigeria they have the best papers to go through although Greece still might pass them. Greece has to beat Argentina anyway to survive or if they draw they must hope on a Nigerian win against South Korea.
Lots of possibilities still left here. Looking at the predictions, 172 participators have Argentina predicted on place 1 in this group. For place 2 we see 129 times Nigeria mentioned, 19 times South Korea and 24 times Greece.
Good luck for our two Argentinian participators, Martin Roqueiro and Emilio (Negro).
Well, that's it for today, CU all tomorrow again,
A Bientot,
Erminio

De update mail van gisteren inclusief de MuMeter deelnemers ranking.
Latin America on Top, Africa and Europe with empty hands.
Football fans,
The first two groups are finished and it was a bad day for both Africa and Europe losing all their teams, whereas all 3 Latin American teams survived.
The day started with the final matches of Group A. Both France and South Africa had a slim chance to survive the group stage but they were also depending on the result of Mexico - Uruguay.
Where the whole world expected both teams to play a cautious draw it was clear from the lively beginning that both teams were looking for something. Ajax sharpshooter Luis Suarez had an early chance for Uruguay to take the lead but missed whereas Mexican Andreas Guardado unleashed a rocket shot that crashed against the underside of the bar bouncing at the wrong side of the line from a Mexican perspective. Just before half time Suarez had more success and scored with a close range header.
In the second half Mexico tried to push but Uruguay was the more dangerous looking side. At the end the 0-1 was still on the scoreboard and both teams earned a place in the second round.
In the other game France and South Africa played with both teams needing a big victory with 3 or 4 goals difference. South Africa took a lead in the 20th minute and the host nation lifted up. And when they scored 0-2 , 10 minutes affter Gourcuff's red card for an elbow, the stadium was going wild. Could they perform a Houdini act and steal a place in the next round. Well, they did get a big chance on 0-3 but were just hitting the outside of the post. 15 minutes later the dream for Bafana Bafana was over when Malouda scored the only French goal, a moment of devastation for the rainbow nation. South Africa wins the game with 2-1 leaving the tournament with winning some pride back after the 3-0 defeat against Uruguay. For "Les Bleus" this tournament was a real disaster. I think the whole French nation including our French participators want to forget the World Cup 2010 edition as quick as possible.
In the evening the closing matches of Group B were played. Argentina was already 95% certain of reaching the next round, the question was which team would join them to the next round. All the other 3 teams still had chances but all were depending on the result of the match of their opponents.
Argentina, playing by far not with their strongest line-up, struggled a long time with the Greek defense but scored 2 goals in the last quarter of the match. But seeing the Greek play you wouldn't think that they were playing for their last chance. At the end they paid for their lack of almost complete lack of ambition with their defensive tactics. Maradonna's team finished on top of the group with the maximum of 9 points, an impressive result.
With the Greek losing even pointless Nigeria still had a chance to survive the group stage, but they needed a win against South Korea. Nigeria created lots of chances, took the lead but South Korea fought back, levelled the game and even took the lead with curled free kick. But Nigeria came back into the match with a penalty of Yakubu....who produced 2 minutes earlier the miss of the World Cup (or was it the miss of Any World Cup) when failing from 3 yards in front of an open goal by shooting wide, incredible. After the 2-2 Martins did get a big chance on the 3-2 but the South Koreans managed to keep the draw on the scoreboard earning them a place at the last 16.
Two 1/8 finale matches are known now, on saturday it's Uruguay vs South Korea and on sunday Argentina vs Mexico.

Scores and Ranking:
With the points of part B in play, the endranking of the Groups, we see interesting movements happening in the intermediate ranking.
Topscorer of the day was Wilko Braal scoring 36 points and gaining 80 positions in the ranking, followed by Diane Hamelink with 35 points (gaining 63 places) and Gert-Jan Blanckaert (gaining 52 places) and Marchal van Lare (gaining 63 places) with 31 points. Also Alex Gosselt and Martin de Putter scored well with 29 points.
For Myranda Braal with 5 points, Marc van Moorsel, Raimon Laan and Raymond Laarhoven with 4 points and red lantarn holder Jeroen Delmeire with 3 points it's a day to forget.
We have a single leader now defending the Argentinian flag (they not only play well, they also predict results well), Martin Roqueiro is on top of the ranking now with 150 points. But Alex Gosselt and Stefan Rijnders are on his tail with just 1 point behind and also yesterday's co-leaders Bart Tubee, Miguel Alvariño Gil and Rui Cortez are still doing well with respectively 145, 142 and 141 points. The top 10 is completed by Florina Szell, Raymond Papenburg, Stefan Moons, Hans Dijkstra and Koen Rubens.
Scoring only 3 points today the red lantarn is held more firmly by Jeroen Delmeire. He scores 38 points now, 112 behind on the leader of the pack but also already 22 points behind on number 180, New Zealand's Brian Woods.
Find back your ranking in the attached file and don't hesitate to ask me if you think something is wrong.

Tomorrow :
Tomorrow the final matches of Group C and Group D are played and another 4 teams will be known that join Uruguay, Mexico, Argentina, South Korea, Holland and Brazil to the last 16.
All 8 teams in the groups C and D are in with a chance of making it to the last 16 and heavyweights England and Germany both feel the heat starting this last round with the knowledge they have to win this last game otherwise it's over (for sure for England, Germany has possibilities to escape even when they lose).
First of all group C.
The whole English nation is demanding a good performance of their team after a sluggish start of this World Cup. And they must against Slovenia since they need a victory to survive the group stage. Slovenia is on top of the group now and a draw would mean for them securing a place at the last 16, a historic result. If they lose, they must hope on a draw in the match between USA and Algeria. A draw for England however most likely would mean that they are out, only a high score draw (3-3 or something like that) can save them. But winning their last match could place them on top of Group C and then probably everybody forgets the first two matches.
For Algeria the situation is more complex, they definitely need to win themselves from USA and hope then that England doesn't win. The USA might survive with a draw if England doesn't win but when the USA beats Algeria they are always through to the last 16.
Looking at the predictions for both matches we see that for Slovenia - England only 4 people think Slovenia will win, 134 go for the Three Lions and 43 think it will be a draw.
The statistics for USA - Algeria show 142 USA victories predicted, 16 Algerian victories and 23 draws.
Good luck to all English Participators !!!
If we look at the endranking predictions for Group C, we see that 165 people have put England on 1. For the second place USA is favorite among 113 participators while 14 go for Algeria and 40 for Slovenia on place 2.
In the evening Group D is played. And here Germany are facing themselves in an awkward position especially while they are playing against Ghana who are on top of the ranking now. Ghana can settle with a draw to reach the next round whereas Germany basically has to win, at least a win secures a secound round ticket without being dependent of the result of the other match between Serbia and Australia.
If Germany draws they must hope that Serbia doesn't win otherwise it's over. And if Germany loses from Ghana they must hope Australia beats Serbia with a small difference. Both Ghana and Serbia have chances to survive if they don't win but again they are than dependent on what the other teams do. Australia however has to do a real Houdini act to stay in the tournament. First of all they need to win themselves with preferably more than 1 goal difference and hope at the same time that Ghana beats Germany.
Well, most people have confidence in the german team, 136 predicted a German win, 10 go for Ghana and 35 for a draw. In the match between Australia and Serbia, the Serbs are favorite with 102 people supporting them, 40 go for the Socceroos and 39 for a draw.
Good luck to both our German and Australian participators !!!
Looking at the predictions, 149 participators have Germany predicted on place 1 in this group. For place 2 we see 87 times Serbia mentioned, 43 times Ghana and 24 times Australia.
Well, that's it for today, CU all tomorrow again,
