Ja, wel een ultieme slowburner, dit Don't Leave the Light On, Baby, maar dan net iets te veel slow en te weinig burning.
Met dit liedje kan ik, net als met Beyond the Sunrise, niet veel.
Hebben we de mindere Fold-liedjes maar gehad

Die prachtige violen en het einde geven dit liedje net die boost die nodig was

Dress Up In You (2006)

Een van de beste songs van The Life Pursuit. Het had wel een singlerelease verdiend, vind ik.
Dit is vintage Belle, en een van hun latere songs waar ze de magie van de beginjaren weten te benaderen. Een prachtig relaas over twee vriendinnen waarvan de ene het gemaakt heeft en de ander op een dood spoor zit. Heerlijk gezongen, vanuit twee perspectieven, prachtig muzikaal ondersteund, met een glansrol voor de trompetsolo, sowieso een knipoog naar hun oudere werk lijkt me
En die trompetsolo is zo goed, dat hij op het eind nog eens terugkomt. Prachtnummer!

Ik blijf het knap vinden hoe jullie in al deze pareltjes nog een volgorde kunnen aanbrengen. B&S is een behoorlijk constante band als je het mij vraagt.

Prachtig. Lieflijker dan lieflijk, de zang alleen al en dan de rest.

Dat klopt wel, hoewel op al hun (zeker latere) albums ook wel wat mindere tracks staan, zoals we inmiddels ook gezien hebben. Ik denk wel dat de uiteindelijke top 30-40 heel dicht bij elkaar zal liggen.

Omdat t onmogelijk is geven we cijfers en daar komt dan vanzelf een top zoveel uit rollen

Een top 100 dus
Maar deze methode maakt het wat dynamischer dan vooraf al een lijst te maken en die met elkaar combineren, zoals we bij R.E.M. en The Cure deden. Dan weet je het resultaat zelf al, en hier blijven niet alleen de lezers maar ook wijzelf in het ongewisse over de uitkomst.
Ik verwacht wel dat het uiteindelijke resultaat hetzelfde zal zijn.

Precies. Ook voor mij zelf interessant, want ik heb niet echt 1 favoriet nummer van Belle and Sebastian. En ook niet 5. Maar eerder een stuk of 25 die van ongeveer hetzelfde niveau zijn. Ben ook benieuwd voor mezelf wat er uitkomt.

Mijn tweede tien in dit topic, net als Dirty Dream Number Two gewoon een magisch nummer. De tekst is ook zo'n heerlijke combo tussen liefelijk en hard. Mijn favoriet is: "Now you're an actress/So says your resume/You're made of card/You couldn't act your way out of a paper bag". Moet altijd glimlachen om dit stuk, wat een keiharde burn

Ease Your Feet in the Sea (1998)

Tja, inderdaad veel mooi, mooier, mooist in deze fase van het Belle-alfabet.
Dit is ook weer een juweeltje, zoals ik sowieso kant A van The Boy With the Arab Strap een geweldige flow vind hebben. Bij Ease Your Feet krijg je eerst zo'n onbekommerd of zorgeloos gevoel, ook niet raar zo tussen Sleep the Clock Around en A Summer Wasting. Maar bij nadere beluistering is dit niet zo'n luchtig nummer als het lijkt. Troubles come and troubles go/The trouble that we've come to know/Will stay with us till somebody decides to go. Stuart zingt over een oude vriend van hem die het leven niet meer zag zitten en er uiteindelijk besloot uit te stappen. Een beetje een Nick Drake-feel heeft dit nummer ook wel, vind ik. Maar dat zal toeval zijn. Erg mooi nummer weer in elk geval!

Zeker erg mooi, maar kan zich net niet met de echte toppers meten.

Electronic Renaissance

De eerste keer dat we een track van Tigermilk behandelen. Het album dat vernoemd werd naar een instrumental dat nooit uitgebracht werd, maar wel live uitgevoerd tijdens Belle's eerste concerten. Stu voerde al deze songs die hij tussen 1993 en 1996 geschreven had eerst solo uit in Glasgow voordat Tigermilk een release kreeg met 1000 copies slechts. 3 jaar later pikte Jeepster de release op voor grotere distributie.
Een beetje een vreemde eend in de bijt qua stijl op het album, maar altijd ook wel een song waar ik op wacht als ik het album luister.
We beginnen de song met een fijne en aardig snelle beat in de verte, gecombineerd met vervormde synths en een soort helicoptergeluid. Het doet denken aan hoe je je hoofd kan voelen na een night out dancing met harde dancemuziek en het in je hoofd nog een wolk van distorted noise is. Dat gaat heerlijk over in heldere nachtelijke klanken (na het feest sta je buiten in de frisse lucht). Dan over naar de echte song, een fijne beat en synths (af en toe moet ik aan Pulp denken) ook weer en Stu's zang een beetje in de echo. En wat blijkt: de lyrics blijken ook een beetje in die hoek te zitten. Het leven in de ravecultuur van de 90s wordt hier een beetje beschreven. De ene is into disco en de ander into funkadelic, gecombineerd met het echte leven van vrienden en werk en dat allemaal te kunnen managen. Ik vind het toch wel een heel lekkere track.

Ja ik wilde Peacetime nog noemen in mn stukje, maar uiteindelijk vergeten

Dan noem je de Electronic Renaissance in de volgende

En daar is de elektronische renaissance van Belle and Sebastian, een kleine 20 jaar na het vorige nummer. In de tussentijd hadden ze wel wat dance-y dingen gedaan, zoals Your Cover's Blown of de mix van I Didn't See It Coming op Third Eye Center maar toch kwamen deze en een paar andere op Peacetime als een verrassing. Belle goes Pet Shop Boys. Naar mijn mening werkt het uitstekend, zeker in deze song, een ode ook aan de Amerikaanse dichteres Sylvia Plath, naar wie het nummer is vernoemd. Het is een van mijn fave tracks op het album. Ook de langste song op het album, maar het verveelt geen moment. Heerlijk ook die hi-NRG-stukken tussendoor, en de samenzang tussen Stu en Sarah.
Van mij mogen ze een heel europopalbum maken, als de nummers van dit niveau zijn!
